"SADDLE FOR CART-HARNESS.
Application filed October 29, 19,08. Serial No. 459,977.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, N IOl-IOLAS GRAzIANo, a citizen of the "United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New Yorkyhaveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Saddles for Cart-Harness, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the-art to which it appertains to make anduse the same.
This invention'relates to saddles for cart harness, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which will prevent injury to a horse, and by which the load or weight carried by the saddle will be adjusted and equalized; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified hereinafter described andv constructed as claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a side view of my improved harness saddle with part of the construction broken away, Fig. 2 a top plan view thereof with part of the a construction omitted, Fig. 8 a partial section on the line 33 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 a top plan View of a pad frame detached from the saddle and. two of which are employed, and :Fig. '5 a partial section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4:-
My improved harness saddle is preferably rectangular and oblong in general form as shown in Fig. 2,and comprises a bottom or base member a composed of sheet metal and the edges of which are preferably rolled or turned to form a bead a and secured transversely of the top surface of the saddle is a channel casing 6 also composed of-sheet metal, said channel casing being provided with base flanges b which are riveted to thebase or body portion a of the saddle as shown at b.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 20, 1909.
said wear plates being preferably secured between the base flanges b of the channel casing b and the bottom or base a of the saddle.
Passed through the channel casing b and over the anti-friction rollers 19 and b is the usual saddle chain c with the ends of Which are connected the shaft tugs 0 through which, in practice, the shafts of the cart are passed, and said shaft tugs are provided in the bottom thereof with anti-friction rollers 0 Secured to and transversely of of the saddle at each side of the middle portion thereof are pads d, and these pads consist of sheet metal frames 0Z to the bottom sides of which are secured canvas or other suitable textile or fibrous casings (Z which are filled in with hair or other suitable packing material 65 and also reinforced by boards (Z which extend transversely of the saddle and longitudinally of the pad frames 0?.
The pad frames (Z are provided with inwardly directed lugs (Z at the corners and sides thereof through which are passed rivets d by which said pad frames are secured to the base or body a of the saddle, and the said pad frames are also preferablyprovided on their upper sides with grooves 058 provided with small holes and through which the textile fabric or other fibrous the body casing (Z is stitched to said frames as shown at d. The ends of the frames d are also provided with pockets d as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 in which the ends of the boards 03 are placed, and by which said boards are held in proper position.
Connected with the top of the transverse channel casing b of the saddle are the usual rings e through which, in practice, the reins are passed, and the saddle is also provided at the opposite ends thereof and under said ends and below or outside of the pads d with attaching devices f with which, in practice, the surcingle or belly-band is connected. My improved harnesssaddle is strong and durable, and also possesses an amount of rigidity which will prevent the bending or twisting thereof in use, and this is a great advantage to devices of this class.
The wear plates 6 in the ends of the channel casing 5' are held in place by bolts 9, and whenever said plates become worn they may be'removed and new ones substi tuted by detaching the nuts with which the bolts 9 are provided and taking out said bolts, after which the said Wear plates may be slid out from beneath the base flanges of the channel casing b and the base or bottom a o th sad e- The anti-friction rollers b and I) also permit the chain c to pass freely and easily through the channel casing 72, and in this way the shafts of the cart will be properly balanced at all times, and the weight resulting therefrom and from the attachments of the harness will be properly distributed at all times,
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is :6
A harness saddle, the side portions of which are provided with transverse pads which are secured to the bottom thereof,
