WASHING-MACHINE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 20, 1909.
Application filed September 25, 1908. Serial No. 454,717.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT GATns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yuma, in the county of Yuma and Territory of Arizona, have invented new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in Washing machines, the object of the invention being to provide a washing machine embodying compressors whereby the washing of the clothes is accomplished by the forcible expression of the suds water through the fabric, and also embodying a novel mode of mounting the compressors and arrangement of means for operating the same, whereby great com ressing power may be secured with the app 'cation of comparatively little strength on the part of the operator.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a verticallongitudinal section through a washing machine embodying my invention. Fig. '2 is a vertical transverse section of the same.
The apparatus embodies a tub or vessel 1, preferably of oblong rectangular form, and having a plane or flat bottom 2. Secured crosswise of the middle of said bottom 2 is a bar 5 between the compression blocks is an oscillating lever 10, the upper end of which projects a suitable distance above the vessel or tub and is formed to provide an operating handle 11. The lever is connected to the outer sides of longitudinal ribs or flanges 7 and 8 on the compression blocks by links 12 and 13, each of which is hinged or pivotedat its inner end to the lever, as at 14, and
- pressors arranged t hinged or pivoted at its outer end to the coacting block, as at 15. These links preferably consist of rigid bars, so that the pressure applied to the lever may be directly transmitted to the blocks.
In operation, the vessel or tub is supplied with a roper quantity of suds water and the clothes inserted therein so as to lie between the bottom 2 and the cooperating compression blocks 7 and 8, and the lever 10 is oscillated back and forth to alternately depress and elevate the com ression blocks. Each block in operation is forced squarely down against the clotheslying between the same andthe adjacent surface of the bottom and forces the water through the clothes, thus dislodging and carrying off the dirt, whereby the clothes are cleansed. Owing to this mode of washing the clothes, wear and tear upon the clothes is avoided, and as, in addition to the pressure from the weight of the blocks the full strength of the operator may be exerted through the action of the lever and the connecting link, it is apparent that great pressure may be applied, even at the expenditure ofcomparatively little strength on the part of the operator, to forcibly drive the Water through the clothes.
.A Washing machine constructed in accordance with my invention is simple, cheap, eflicient and durable, and enables a large amount of clothes to be washed within a com aratively short time.
aving thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A washing machine comprising a tub or vessel, a pair of pivotally mounted comerein, an operating lever arranged between said compressors, and
links pivotally connecting said lever with said compressors.
2. A washing machine comprising a tub or vessel having a flat bottom, a cross bar secured to the bottom, compressor blocks pivoted to the opposite sides of the bar for movement toward and from the bottom, an oscillating lever ivoted to the bar, and links connecting said ever with said compressing blocks.
3. A washing machine com rising an oblong rectangular tub or Vesse having a flat bottom, a cross bar secured to the bottom,
com ress-ion blocks pivotally mounted upon In testimony whereof I efi'ix my signature tjhe Ear fOli movementlfoward 2mg from t%1e in presence of two witnesses.
ottom, a ever ivota mounte u ont1ev bar between sai n comgression bloe s, vand ALBERT GATES 5 rigid links pivotally connecting said lever Witnesses:
