Patented April 20, 1909.
I v Application filed' lyiarch 19, 1308. Serial No. 422,173.
To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, JOHN Rr'iK subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State'of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Elevators, of which the following is a specification. r a
This invention is'a safety device for elevators, and has for its object to provide im-' proved means for automatically gripping the elevator guides in case the hoisting cable breaks, said means including springs which operate catch blocks to engage the guides. Improved means are also provided for hold ing the catch blocks in engagement until released, after being operated.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which lgure- 1 is'a front elevation. Fig. 2 is at side elevation. Fig; 3 is a plan view partly In section. Fig. 4 is a detail of one of the catch blocks. Figs. 5and 6 are details of a retaining device. a Referring specifically to the drawings, A indicates the upright guides for the elevator cage, having flanges a at the middle.
B indicates the side frames of the cage,
on which the cage is supported. There is a,
pair of these frames at each side. They are connected by curved arms 0 to upright posts or bars P at the middle, and thesebarsare bolted to a heavy cross plate 0. Spacing blocks 1) are located between the bars B at each side, and spacing blocks E are located between the arms C at each side, and the bars B are also provided with blocks H between the upper ends thereof.
The blocks D, E and H at each side are spaced a art to form a housing or recess for t e catc blocks G which are loosely held in said'recess between the frames B. Each of said blocks has a tapered groove 9 located opposite the flangec of the guides, and the sidesof the groove are corrugated or toothed. The mouth of the groove is wider than the flange a, but the width decreases so that it is narrower than said flange at the bottom. The blocks are carried at the endsof arms F, of which there is a pair at each side, and these arms are connected at the middle by a bolt J to the rods K'to which the hoisting cable is attached by a'loop U- The rods K Work through holes in the plate 0 and ONEN,
then suddenly starts again.
arms F are lifted, retracting the catch blocks G from the guides, andthe elevator car is free to move up and down as usual. Should the cable break, the springs I instantly expand and force the arms F down, roducing a toggle action which presses t e catch blocks G against the flanges of the guides, gripping said flanges in the grooves of the catch blocks and bringing the cage to a stop. The loop U is also provided with a de ending rack bar L which works through a ho e in the plate 0, between the rods K, and this rack bar is engageable by a s ring latch R su ported in brackets upon t e. under side of t e plate 0. When the cable breaks and the springs act as described the rack bar L is forced down and when at its lowest position is engaged by the latch R which thereby prevents the arms F from lifting. The latch can be released, however, by pulling on the rope S connected thereto and extending down to within reach of the cage. This catch is serviceable in case of any accidental slip or release of the cable or hoisting devices, since it will prevent the severe jerk which sometimes occurs when a cable slips and By the means shown, when the cable slips the catch blocks will take hold, and Will then prevent the jerk or lift by remaining in engagement until the latch is released in the manner described.
The invention is applicable to elevators of various kinds, and various modifications of the structure may bemade within the scope of the following claim.
I claimi The combination with opposite guides, of a pair of side frames for the cage opposite each guide, arms projecting from the res ective frames at each side, toward the mi dle,
upright posts at the inner end of each arm, a cross lateconnecting the top of said posts, a catc block located between each pair of side frames and movable to and from the guides, toggle arms connected at their outer ends to said blocks and pivoted together at their inner ends and arranged to Contact at their inner ends With the under side of aforesaid 21.11118, hoisting rods connected to the inner ends of said toggle arms and extending upwardly through the cross plate, and springs coiled around the rods between the JOHN RI TIKON EN l toggle arms and the cross plate and in the YVit-nesses EMIL A. HURME, WM. J ROBINSON.
