Description

anatema;

.Lene/Poma Naonsss, .dated .new 29, 1869.
`IMPROVE:ninna* 1N Renn ron LondraI The Schedule referred to in these Letten Patentuand making partnf the same.
To all whom it 'ma-y concern :V
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. WmTcoMB, of Claremont, in the county of Sul1ivan,and State of N ew Hampshire, have invented a new and improved -Reed for Weaving; and Ido hereby declare that the follow'- ing is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention 'consists in the form of the dent or dart for the reed, the dart being constructed of iron or other metal, with-two curved or oval faces, meeting so as to forln two smooth and even, but .not cutting-edges to the dart.
The darts made in this way present a surface which gives the least possible friction to the passage of the ,thread through the reed, and ina great degree removes the liability of the threads breaking while the loom is in operation.`
The dart is also made with a boss near each end, and upon one or both sides, so that, when placed in the reed, the bosses for any particularl reed being always of a given thickness, and fitting side by side, the darts will always be at a uniform distancefrom each other, and will also be held firmly in place, and
have no tendency to turn or twist in the reed.
The dart is also tied to the ribs of the reed, by pass ing the cordaround the shoulder of the boss, so that the dart can never slip from its place in the reed.
lIn the accompanying drawiugs- The reed is represented by the letters a b c d, a b and c 'd being the ribs, and e'e-the darts tied to the ribs.
A single dart is represented by f g, its forni and the curvature of the faces being shown by the end secm represents cross-sections of two darts of the old? style, in position, and n represents cross-sectlons of the improved darts when in position;
The advantages of this improvement, 'aref First, diminution of fi-iction on the threads, and securing them against breaking.
Second, the. preservation of a uniform distance be-` tween the darts, by means of the bosses on them, and also securing them against turning or twisting in the reed.
Third, security of the dart in position, the shoulders l of the boss, around which they aretied to the ribs of.
the reed. preventing them from'sliding longitudinally. lWhat I claim as my invention, is
' A weavers reed, with metallic darts, having oval` faces meeting at the opposite edges, and with bosses' on one or both sides of the dart, with shoulders asv indicated, all constructed and arranged as and for the purposes specified.
