Letters Patent No. 91,883, dated June 29, 1869; antedated June 11, 1869.
IMPROVED COMPOUND FOR EXTING-UISHING- FIRES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Be it known that I, Em THAYER, of the city, county, and State of New York. haveinvented certain new and useful Compounds, or Mixtures for the Purpose of Extinguishing Fires; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof. 7
The nature of my invention consists in impregnating the water used in extinguishing a fire, with certain ingredients dissolved therein, or mixed therewith, before the water is projected upon the fire.
By this method two objects are gained, each conducive to the extinguishment of the fire. One is the creation, by the decomposition of these ingredients, of an atmosphere, in which combustion is impossible and the'other is the coating over of the combustible substances exposed to the tire, by the melting or liquefying of some of the ingredients of the mixture, or compound.
The substances of important use for this purpose, are carbonate of lime, muriate of ammonia, chloride of lime, muriate of soda, nitrate of ammonia, nitrate, phosphate, carbonate, and bicarbonate of soda, and the salts of potassium, aluminum, and magnesia,.and sal ammomac.
I do not claim any particular form of vessel in which thisadmixture, or solution may be made, nor any particular method of projecting, when made, upon the fire; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. Asolution of muriate of ammonia, in combination with carbonate or bicarbonate of soda, or their equivalent, for the extinguishing of fire, substantially as set forth.
2. Asolution of sal ammoniac, in combination with nitrate or phosphate of soda, for extinguishing fire,
substantially as set forth.
3. A mixture of water, carbonate of lime, and muriate of soda, for extinguishing fire, substantially as set forth.
