CAB-COUPLING.
Specification of Lettera Patent..
- Patented Api-n 2o, 190e.
" Application filed June 24, 1907. Serial No. 380,643.
To alllwhom it may concern:
Be 1t known that I, FRED MiKEAL, a citi zen of the United States of America, and a `resident of J acksboro, county of Jack, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in @ar-Couplers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to car couplers and more particularly to that type in which a cou ling-pin and link are employed and the stri ing together ol' the cou )ling heads causes the pin to drop through the link and effect the coupling without necessitating a trainman being present.
The object of this invention is to provide nn improvement in the means whereby the pin can be set preparatory to coupling, and
automatically released by the contacting ot the coupling heads. l
To that end it consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which are hereinafter more fully described and claimed,
In theaccompanying drawings which forni a lpart of this speciication:*l `igure 1 is a si e elevation of a coupling head, having my invention apFplied thereto, `the coupling pin being set. `ig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the coupling pin released, and Fig. 3 is a plan of the showing of Fig. 2.
Coupling head 1 has projecting inwardly from its face, a [hired mouthed horizontal coupling-link chamber 2, and extending therethrough from the top a vertical couplingin chamber 3, immediately' behind Whic lies a vertical aperture 4.
Suitably journaled to the bottom 'of the.
coupling head, in brackets 5 and 5, the latter of which may be integral`with the head if desired, is a crank shaft 6, extending to the side of the car and being /provided on its outer end with an arm and handle 7, and midway between brackets 5 andV 5a with forwardly extending arm 8. Ratchet wheel 20 is firmly mounted u on said crank shaft adjacent to the side o the head. Iivoted at the end of arm 8 is the link 9 which exh aperture 4 (the latter being large enoug to permit free (play), and has its upper end bent forwar and bifurcated for the reception and pivotingof the upper end of couplin -pin 10. Coiledsprin 11 encircles crank s midd e portion a proximatel Q straight and abutting against t e uppersi( eof the arm 8,
aft 6 and has its ends abutting against the lower face of head 1 in such a manner as to exert a downward pull on arm 8.
tod 1li is suitably mounted upon the exto?- rior f head 1, in brackets 15, and is pressed outwardly b coiled-sprin 17, its outer end )rejecting s 'ghtly beyon the face of the ead and its inner end having pivoted thereto one end of link 18, the other end of which is pivoted to plawl 19, which latter is in turn pivoted to t e side of head 1 in such a position as to engage the tooth of the ratchet 20, and thus prevent clock-wise rotation of crank shaft 6 when the coupling-pin 10 is raised into a )roper setting position "lhus it is evident that the pawl 19 constitutes a brake lever for the vertical rod 9. Y i
Any convenient means can be employed whereby the coupling-pin 10 can be raised from the ytop of the car. In the `particular embodiment of my invention herein shown such means consist of a link 13 pivoted at the bottom to link 9, and at the to to one end of the lever 14, by depressing the other end of which, it is obvious the coupling-pin will be raised.
The operation of the device is as follows When it is desired to maken coupling, the trainman, if at the side of the car, turns the .crank counter clockwise until, by meansof 'link- 9, the lower end of couplinpin 10 is raised just above the link c er 2, the arts 6, 7 and 8 thus constitute a setting ever for the pin. In this position the awl 19, properly positioned and maintaine by coiled-spring 17, en ages the tooth of ratchet wheel 20 and hol s the coupling-pin thus suspended. If the trainman is on top of the car, he accomplishes the Asame result by means of l-ever 14 and link 13.` 'Ilhe'carsI to be coupled are then brought together, the coupling-link on the other car enters the ilared mouth link chamber 2, and its coupling hetd` striking the rod 16, pushes it in wardly andthus causes pawl 19 to be withdrawn from the tooth ,efratchet wheel 20, and the couplin`g-pin iifdue to its weight and the tension of sprin 11 transmitted through arm 8 and link 9, i rops through the coupling link and effects the coupling.
What I claim and desire to secure by Iletters Patent is:-
1. In a 4car-cou ler, the combination with a couplingin, o a vertically movable rod adapted to ift the said pin, a crank shaft cooperating therewith, a ratchet wheel mount- 2. `In near coupler the cumbimrticn with a. couph pin, of n. vertically movable rod adaJte to lift the said Pune bmlrclevcr .1w ote intermediate efits ends, midone en restrammiethe seid rod, a releasing pin projecting yond the face of the coupler end connected by a. link to the other end of the brake lever, and a. s ring tending to throw 'the brake lever to heid the vertical rod, sul)u etahtally as described.
3.111 a car coupler the combination with u. suitable head havin# e link chamber in the forward face thereelaend u vertical bore ex tending through the heed in the rear of said 2 chamber, nl' c coupling pin, c rod vertically movable in the seid bore and engaging the scid lpin, c. setting lever pivcted below the wup er in the rear uf the said rod, and pivotcd tc the latter, u. brake lever for the rod )ivated en the head, a releasing pin mounte on the head, and connected by c link tc one end of the llmke lever, and@ coiled s ring tending te reject the releasingpin iieyond the ferwam fece of the coupler and acting on the breke lever te hold the vertical red raised.
Signed at Jecksboro this 1st dey of June 190?.
