The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part'of the same.

To all lwhom 'it may concern Be it known that I, PETER S. LUTHER, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Earth-Closets and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', whereby a person skilled in the art can make and use the same, reference being had to the accompan yin g drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

Like lettersin the figures indicate the same parts.

Figure l is a section through the middle of the closet, showing the interior of the further half.

Figure 2 is a rear view, with the back of the case removed so as'to show the interior arrangements.

My invention relates to that class of closets in which earth is used to absorb the odor and cover the excrement, by a self-acting mechanism attached to the cover or by means of a handle or lever, whereby a cert-ain portion of earth is taken from the hopper at each movement.

My invention consists in applying a tilting-platform under the seat, into which the earth shall be thrown by any of the usual appliances, for the purpose of receiving the excrement, and discharging it, together with the earth, to the rear ofthe closet, where it can be re-A ceived and conveyed away by a` pipe or conductor, or tipped into a pan or receptacle.

A is the case or frame.

B is the seat.

C is the cover.

Dis the hopper, into .which line, dry earth is put as often as necessary.

E is a sliding-platform resting on cross-bars M, which slide in grooves at the side of the case.

F is a sliding and tilting-platform, which rests on the cross-bar L, sliding in grooves at the sides of the case.

The platform F is moved back yand forth upon its sliding bearing, by means of the lnksH, which conneet the cross-bar L with the ends of the' quadrants G which are attached to the cover O, and are operated by its opening and shutting.

The sliding platform E is operated by the connect ing-rods I and K, and levers J, which communicate motion from the cross-barA L tothe front cross-bar of the upper platform, so that the two platforms move in opposite directions bythe opening and closing of the cover C. There are two sets of these leversand connecting-rods, one on each side of the case, as shown in lig. 2. y

When the cover is down, the platform F is moved to its most rearward position, and falls down against the partition N, in such a manner as to discharge its contents. When the cover is raised, the platform F moves forward in sucha manner that tbe bottom slides upon the top edge of N, which supports it and brings it again to a horizont-al position.

The operation of my invention is as follows:

The cover being shnt, and the parts in the position shown by the black lines in iig. 1, when the cover is raised, the earth which has run out from the hopperl), through an opening in the lower part of the front, and now covers the surface of yE, is pushed off by the return of the platform, and falls uponF as it advances, covering it with a thin layer of the dry earth,

which is spread uniformly upon it as one of the platforms advances, and the other recedes. When the cover `is entirely open, and the parts are in the position shown by the red lines, the closet is ready for use. The excrement is deposited upon the platform F, and when the cover is closed, it is tilted otl' to the rear. to-

gether with the earth upon the platform. As the coveris let down, the platform E advances, andmore earth flows out from the hopper, and coversit-s surface. v Thev operation above described, is then repeated.

My invention can also be'operated by any other.;- means than thathereiu described, of connecting the cover with the platforms, so that they are made to have the proper motions forward'and backward herein specified. The platforms can also vbe moved by means of a lever, instead of having motion communicated from the opening and closing of the cover.

2. The combination-of the sliding and tilting-platform F, with the platform E and hopper D, for the; purpose of an earth-closet, substantially as herein described.
