Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 20, 1909.
Application filed April 9, 1908. Serial No. 426,135.
Be it known that I, MILTON H. HART, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Swivel Coupling, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to swivel couplings, and the objects of the invention are-to provide a swivel coupling, particularly adapted for use in hose nozzles which shall be water tight under great pressure and which shall be eas to mampulate.
I rther objects of the invention will be hereinafterv mentioned and pointed out in the claims. i
In the drawings: Fi re 1 is a front view partly insection an with parts broken away of a nozzle with couplings constructed according tomy invention; Flg. 2 is a view of the complete nozzle; and Fig. 3 is a detail view of a washer.
Referring to the drawings the cou ling member 1 which permits of the nozzle eing turned in a horizontal lane, consists of an exteriorsleeve 4 provi ed with a thread 5 for attachment to the end of a hose or the like, and with an internal annular flange 6 adjacent to the thread 5. The upper face of the flange 6 is provided with an annular groove 7, the function of which will a pear.
hecoupling member 4 is also provide with internal threads 8. and with lateral apertures 10 .and 11 intersecting these threads and shown as countersunk for the reception of screws 12 and 13 respectively. Within the exterior sleeve 4 is an interior sleeve 14 having a-thread 15 at its outer end for enga ement with a T-connection and 'providbd with an external annular flange 16, the outer face of which has a rotary fit within the body of the coupling 4. A collar 17 is provided with an outer thread 18 adapted to engage with the thread 8 in the sleeve 4 and having its inner face adapted to rotary fit on the outer surface of the interior sleeve 14. A
cap 19 is rovided with an external thread 20 adapte to engage with the threads 8 on the sleeve 4 and, with a flange 21 fitting over the edge of the sleeve 4'. The upper and lower faces of the flange 16 and the lower face of the collar 17 are provided with am1u-.
lar ooves 22 and 23 respectively, these being siimlar to the grooves 7 in the flange 6. The adjacent faces of the collar 17 and cap 19 are spaced apart to form a recess for a packing 24. Antifriction balls 25 are placed between the annular grooves in the flanges 6 and 16 and the collar 17 to provide for the easy rotation of the exterior sleeve 4 and the into- :3-
rior sleeve 14 upon each other.
To prevent the water working itself upwardly between the exterior sleeve 4 and the interior sleeve. 14. I preferably provide a washer 251 .which is secured to the end of the inner sleeve 14 by means of a metal ring 26 through which suitable screws 27 are fastened to the end of the inner sleeve 14 which is preferably made flush with the bottom of the flange 6 so that the washer 251 is ada ted to overlap the joint made by the end 0 the inner sleeve 14 and the flange 6. It will also be noted that the metal rin 26 is adapted to overlap the joint made by t e inner sleeve 14 and the flange 6, although the metal ring 26 preferably does not extend to the full diame ter of the outer sleeve, for in this manner it will be seen that the water under pressure which is moving in the direction of thearrow, will bepermitted to force itself against the outer surface of the washer 251 and with the increasing in pressure will hold the washer more firm against the bottom of the flange 6 and so revent the ossibility of any water ever lea ing upward etween the inner sleeve 14 and the outer sleeve 4.
I have shown this swivel coupling as forming a part of a hose nozzle comprising a T- connection 50, secured to the swivel couplin by means of screw threads 15, and provider at its ends with swinging elbows 51 to the outer ends of which are secured the converging pipes 52 leading to a Y-comiection, as shown in Figa2. Between the T-connection 50 of these elbows 51 are suitable joints formed b flanges 53 on the T connections, each suc flange 54 and an outer flange 55inclosing between them packing material 62. The elbows 51 are provided with flanges 56and 58 and with inner flanges 57 bearing against the corres onding portions of the T-connection 50. 9llars61 screw threaded at 60 unites the elbows'to the T-connection 50. To prevent binding of the elbow joints due to 'high water pressure a rod is provided extending from one elbow through the T-connection to and through the other elbow, and passing through suitable bearings 66 in said elbows and flange provided with an mner sleeve having an internal annular flange, an inner sleeve having an external annular flange, a collar having detachable engagement Within said exterior sleeve for retaining said interior sleeve in position, means for retaining said collar within said exterior sleeve, the flange on said interior sleeve being embraced between ,the flange on said exterior sleeve and said collar, a washer secured to the end of said inner sleeve and overlapping the end of the annular flange on-said exterior sleeve, and means for holding said Washer in place. k .2. A swivel joint comprising an exterior sleeve having an internal annular flange, an
inner sleeve having an external annular flange, a collar having detachable engagement W1th1n said exterior sleeve for retalnlng said interior sleeve in position, means for re taining said collar within said exterior sleeve, the flange on said interior sleeve'being embraced between the fiange on said exterior sleeve and said collar, a washer secured to the end of said inner sleeve and overlapping the end of the annular flange on said exterior sleeve, and means for holding said Washer in place, said washer holding means also overapping the end of the annular flange on said exterior sleeve.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
