A. J. WARREN'AND W. WILSON, or WEST Een eterea, WIS- CONSIN.
Letters .Patent No. 91,800, dated J'tme 22, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-GENERATORS FOR COMBUSTION.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it moz/y; concern:
YBe it known that we, A. J WARREN and D. W. WILSON, of West Eau Claire, iu the county ofl Eau Glaire, and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in the Process for Gonsumiug Sawdust as Fuel in Furnaces; and we do hereby declare that.A the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a top sectional view of our device. y
` Figure 2 is a side view of the same.
Figures 3 and 4 are front view and sectional end view thereof'. Y Our invention relates to furnaces in which sawdust is used as fuel for making steam; and
It consists mainly in constructing and arranging, in a novel manner, pipes in which gas'may be generated and conducted to the re.
Italso consists in adjusting automatic valves, in the spouts through which the sawdust is passed tothe re, which are opened by theweightof such sawdust, and close when no such substance is passing said spouts. ,Y
The letter A of the drawings represents a'tubular boiler, enclosed in a shell or frame, and letters B are the lire-places thereunder, all constructed in the ordinary mauuer, except the grates of the fire-places are formed of .small bars or wires, approaching very nearly together', andpforming a species of web, upon which the sawdust may be held without seriously disturbing the draught of air. y
The chief feature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the gas-tube, marked C ou the drawings.
It'commences at the dome d, which forms a chamber over the top of the boiler, and passes from thence downward, as shown on fig. 2, and into one of the Vturned inward to the fire-place.
side tubes of the boiler. It passes, through said tube to the rear ofthe boiler, as shown onv fig. 1; from thence across the rear'of the boiler, returning to the front through a tube on the side opposite' to that through which it entered, asshown on lig. 3- After thus reaching the front ofthe boiler, it is bentdown ward as low as the top of the ireplace, in the manner represented on Iig. 3, crossing the' front thereof, as shown. p v
At the points s we attach short We also attach a cock, o, at the point -iudicated, by
which the ilow of gas in the pipes may be regulated.
The function of this` arrangement is .to receive the gas that collects in the dome d, and conduct it through the boiler-tubes to the fire, receiving heat from the boiler upon the route, and generating additional gas therefrom. Y
The conducting-spente for sawdust are marked E ou the drawings.
vThe letters y are valves adjusted belowthe spouts, arranged to close when the sawdust hasV ceased ruunmg. Y 4
XVe disclaim all right of invention to anything shown in the patent of E. Si'. Chase, uuderdate of May 18, 1869.
What we claim as our invention, and desire tosec ure by Letters Patent-, is-L The apparatus for consuming sawdust herein described, having gas-tube O, boiler A, dome d, ireplaces B, spouts E, and valves Y, 'constructed and arranged substantially as'specitied.
In testimony that we claim the above, we have hereunto subscribed our names, iu the presence of two witnesses.
