Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
w. r. VANN, oF MAcoMB, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVED HORSESHOE-NAIL POINTER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 91,797, dated .I une 22, 1869.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, W. T. VANN, of Macomb, in the county of McDonough and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Im provements in Horseshoe-Nail Pointers; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to a machine for pointing horseshoe-nails, and consists mainly, in the employment of a lever having a spring hammer or swage, in connection with a proper pointing-block.
The details of construction and manner of operation will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a side elevation of my improved machine; Fig. 2, a
plan view, and Fig. 3 a side elevation of the spring-hammer detached.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and operation.
A represents a solid piece of suitable metal, which may be termed the anvil or pointin g block. This is provided upon its lower side with the projectionv a, by means of which it may be clamped in a vise, or otherwise suitably secured to a firm foundation.
B represents a lever, ot' suitable construction, provided with a slot, b, as shown. This lever is connected to the pointing-block by means of a hinged arm, o, which, extending up through the slot b, is securely fastened by the nutV b', as is clearly shown in the drawings. The lever B is also provided with an additional sllot, d, over the ends of which hang the catches el d2.
E represents a hammer or swage, the face e of which corresponds in size with and rests in the slot d. This hammer is provided with a head, e', the edges of which overhang the sides of the lever, so that the hammer cannot pass through the slot. It is inserted in place by removing the catch d2. Beneath the edges of the hammer-head are placed suitable springs, the coiled being preferable. The face of the hammer-head is'suitably recessed, for the purpose of forming the head ot' the nail, and so,
also, the face of the pointing-block is recessed The swage E should then be struck a smart blow with a hammer. completed.
The operation is then The slot b permits the lever to be adjusted for larger or shorter nails, as may be desired.
By the machine described I am enabled to point my nails uniformly, so that each one, when driven, emerges from the hoot' upon the same line. I can also point them much more rapidly than they can be made by hand.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The machine described, consisting, essen' tially, of the swage A, with projection a, swage E, with face e and head e', and the adjustable lever B, the whole being constructed and operated in the manner described, for the purpose set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 16th day of February, 1869.
