tree end of the spring in place so that by the adjustment.ofthesaid arm 25 upon the ratchet the pressure of the spring 22 may be varied and in this way vary the pressure of the brush upon the commutator, taking up any lost motion required for that purpose either from the wear of the brushes or relaxing of the spring, and thus regulating the tension of the brushes upon the commutator.
By the construction above set forth it will be noted that the connecting links 14 provide a durable mechanical and electrical connection between the base and the brush holding head, serving both functions to sup port the head and tori-n proper electrical connection between said base and head, doing away with "he necessity of the employment 0; the usual series of copper or like strips between the base and head, while on account of their use I am enabled to provide a more coi'npact brush holder by placing the controlling spring within the same instead of outside thereof, and i. am also enabled to p 'ovide a simple means for varying and controlling the pressure ot the brushes upon the commutator.
What I claim is:
l. A brush holder comprising base, head, links connecting the base and head, and means for maintaining said links in proper electrical contact with the base and head.
2. A brush holder comprising a base and head, links pivoted to the base and head and supporting the head and. springs acting on said links for maintaining them in proper electrical contact with the base and head.
3. A brush holder comprising a base and head, links pivotally and slidably mounted on said base and head, and means for maintainin said links in proper electrical contact with. the base and head.
i. A brush holcer comprising a base and head. each having ears thereon, shafts secl'ired in said ears, linrs pivotally and slid ably mounted on said shafts anc. means for maintaining said links in electrical contact with the base and head.
A brush holder comprising a base and head, each having ears thereon, shaft-s supported in said ears, links piyotally and slid ably mounted on said shafts, and springs confined between said links and adapted to hold them in proper electrical contact with said ears.
6. A brush holder comprising a base and l 1 I I head, links connecting the base and head, springs acting on said links for maintaining them in proper electrical contact with the base and head, and adjustable means mounted between said links for exerting pressure upon said head.
7. A brush holder comprising a base and head pivotally connected, a yoke supported by the base and carrying a coiled tension spring having one arm operating upon the head and another free arm and means for holding and adjusting the pressure of said spring.
8. A brush holder comprising a brush and head pirotally connected, a yoke mounted on said base, a ratchet carried by said yoke, and a tension spring mounted in the yoke having one arm engaging with the head and the other arm adapted to engage said ratchet.
9. A. brush holder comprising a base and head, pivotally and slidably mounted links connecting said base and head, means for iintaining said links n electrical contact with said base and head, a yoke secured to the base and mounted between said links and carrying a tension spring acting upon said head and means for adjusting the tension of said spring.
10. A brush holder comprising a base and head, pivotally and slidably mounted links cmniecting said base and head, means for maintaining said links in electrical contact with the base and head, a. yoke secured to the base between said links and having a ratchet and a coiled spring mounted in the yoke and having one end acting upon the iead and the other end adapted to engage with said ratchet.
11. A brush holder comprising a base and head, links connecting the base and head, means for mainta'liing said links in proper electrical contact with said base and head, and means for exerting pressure on said head to force against the commutator.
12. A brush holder comprising a base and head, links pivotally connected to said base and head, means for maintaining said links in proper electrical contact with said base and head, and spring means attached to said base and exerting pressure on said head.
In testimony whereof, ii the said ALEX- lxnicn have hereunto set my hand.
ALEXANDER RAE.
