To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT G. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake Forest, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Valves for Hot Water Heating Systems, (Case 1,) of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to hot water heating systems, and has for its object to improve the apparatus used whereby the efficiency of such systems may be increased.
In the past a great part of the energy contained in the heated water used in such systems as a means for conveying heat from the fire to the place to be heated has been lost on account of the apparatus used not properly facilitating the flow ofwater. In many cases there is serious interference between the currents of water entering and leaving the radiator, and the result is a serious loss of efficency in heating.
It is the object of my invention to overcome these objections by roviding means for preventing interference etween the water currents in such systems, and I have shown my invention embodied in a valve mechanism adapted to be connected to a ra-- diator and adapted to control the flow of water into and away from such radiator, and also to direct the water both on entering and leaving the radiator so it will flow to its proper passageway without hindrance.
A further object of my invention is to 0011- struct a valve for accomplishing the above indicated results that will be compact in every way, to facilitate decreasing the distance between the radiators and the floor and to decrease the distance between the supply and return pi es.

Referring to the figures, the valve consists essentially of a body portion o formed integrally with which are supply and return connections adapted to be connected to suitable pipes by the unions a, a. made with the radiator by a removable section o connected to the valve portion by a union 10 The section 1) is made removable in order to facilitate securing such section to the radiator, and after this is in place the valve proper is secured thereto by means of the union mentioned. The main body part of the valve is provided with a horizontal partition 12 extending throughout its length excepting where cut away to permit the operation of the gate v. This horizontal partition o is continued in the section o by the horizontal )artition 123, which terminates at its outer enc in an up-turned portion, or lip. The gate qr is connected to a stem '0 extending through the closing plug 12 of the valve and is adapted to be moved from one position to another by the operating handle h. Leakage is prevented around the stem o by a suitable stufiing box if, as indicated.
The gate 12 is ada ted to be moved from the position indicatec in Fig. l, which is the open position, to a horizontal position which is the closed position, and a partition a extending from the horizontal partition 12 to the outside shell of the valve is provided to form a continuous opening from the inlet pipe to that part of the inside of the valve above the partition if and v The portion of the body part of the valve below the horizontal partition 12 and o forms a continuous passageway to the outlet pipe secured to the valve by the union M The gate 41* is adapted to fit closely between the partition a and the closing plug o to prevent leakage around such gate directly from the inlet opening to the outlet opening when the gate is in the position indicated in Fig. 4. When the gate is moved to the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 4, it serves to entirely cut off the communication between the inlet opening and that part of the valve above the horizontal partition, and at the same time to form a continuous passageway from the inlet opening directly to the outlet opening.
It is to be observed that the up-turned end of the partition v serves not only to direct .the water entering the radiator, but also to direct the water returning from the radiator to the passageway below the horizontal partitions, and thus constitutes a means for preventing interference between the water Connection is currents entering and leaving the radiator. When the gate c occupies its closed position, the water will circulate directly from the supply pipe connection to the outlet pipe COIIIIGCUOIL This is of great advantage, inasmuch as the hot water is always available at the radiator and no time is required to start the flow through the supply and return pipes and also this serves as a protection to such pipes in exposed positions in cold weather.
While I have shown my invention in the embodiment above described, I do not limit myself to the particular detail herein shown, but claim broadly any modifications for accomplishing the results hereby secured that will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
What I claim is:
1. In a valve for a hot water radiator, a body portion having supply and return passages, supply and return connections, and a single valve closure adapted to connect such supply and return passages with the supply and return connections respectively when such valve closure is in one extreme position, and adapted to connect such supply and return connections together directly when such valve closure is in the other extreme position, intermediate positions of the valve closure serving to permit water flowing into the supply connection to divide, a part going into the return connection directly and part to the radiator and thence to the return connection without interference between the two water currents thus produced.
2. In a valve for a hot water radiator, a body portion having supply and return passagejs, supply and return connections, and a "single valve closure adapted to connect such supply and return passages with the supply and return connections respectively when such valve closure is in one extremeposition and adapted to connect such supply and return connections together directly and interrupt connection between the supply connection and supply passage when such valve closure is in theother extreme position, intermediate positions of the valve closure serving to permit water flowing into the supply "connection to divide, a part going into the return connection directly and part to the radiator and thence to the return connection without interference between the two water currents thus produced.
3. In a valve for a hot water radiator, a body portion having horizontal supply and return assages, a single connection between the val ire and the radiator, supply and return connections, and a single valve closure adapted when in one extreme position to prevent communication in the valve between the supply and return connections and when the other extreme position to prevent communication between the supply connection and the supply passage, the last mentioned position serving also to establish communication between the supply and return connections.
4. In a valve for a hot water radiator, a
body portion having supply and return passages, supply and return connections, and a single valve closure adapted when in one extreme position to prevent communication in the valve between the supply and return con nections and when in the other extreme position to prevent C011 iunication between the suppl connection and the supply passage, the last mentioned position serving also to establish communication between the sup ply and return connections.
5. In a valve for a hot water radiator, a body portion, a horizontal partition dividing the body portion into supply and return passages, such partition extending beyond the body portion through a single connection to the radiator, such partition adapted when the valve is in place to direct the water both on entering and leaving the radiator, supply and return connections and a flat gate adapted to connect such supply and return passages with the supply and return con ncctions respectively when the gate is in one extreme osition and adapted to connect such supp y and return connections together directly when the gate is in the other extreme position, intermediate positions of the gate serving to permit water flowing into the supply connection to divide and part go to the return connection directly and part to the radiator and thence to the return co'nnection without interference between the two water currents thus produced.
6. In a valve for a hot water radiator, a
cylindrical body portion, a horizontal partition dividing the body portion into semi-cylindrical supply and return passages, such partition extending beyond the body ortion and adapted when the valve is in ace to direct the water both on entering iLl'lC leaving the radiator, supply and return connections and a flat gate adapted to connect such supply and return passages with the supply and return connections respectively when the gate is moved to a nearly vertical position and adapted to connect such supply and return connections together directly when the gate is practically horizontal.
7. In a valve for a hot water radiator, a body portion, a horizontal partition dividing the body portion into supply and return passages, such partition extending beyond the body portion and adapted when the valve is in place to direct the water both on entering and leaving the radiator, supply and return connections and a flat gate adapted to connect such sup ly and returnpassages with the supply an return connections respectively when the gate is'mcve'd to-a nearly vertical position and adapted to-connect such supply and return connections together directly when the gate is practically horizontal, intermediate positions of the gate serving to permit water flowing into the supply connection to divide and part go to the return connection directly and part to the radiator and thence to the return con nection without interference between the two water currents thus produced.
8. In a valve for a hot water radiator, a cylindrical body portion, a common connection between the valve and the radiator, such connection constituting a continuation of the cylindrical body portion, a horizontal partition dividing the body portion into semi-cylindrical supply and return passages, such partition extending through such connection eyond the valve and adapted when the valve is in place to direct the water both on entering and leaving the radiator, supply and return connections and a single flat gate adapted to connect such supply and return passages with the supply and return connections respectively when the gate is moved to one position and adapted to connect such supply and return connections together direct y when the gate is moved to another position, intermediate positions of the gate serving to permit water flowing into the supply connection to divide and part go to the return connection directly and part to the radiator and thence to the return connection without interference between the two water currents thus produced.
9. In a radiator valve, a valve body provided with a supply passage and a return passage, both of said passages being adapted to communicate with a radiator at one end and at the other end with supply and return comlections respectively, said body being also provided with a passage connecting said supply and return passages, a single valve closure adapted to close the supply passage to the radiator when in one position and to close said connecting passage when in another position, said valve closure being capable of taking any intermediate position, thereby restricting more or less said connecting assage, whereby the flow through the supp y passage to the radiator may be increased, the flow through the connecting passage being correspondingly decreased, or the flow through the supply passage may be decreased and the flow through the connecting passage correspondingly increased.
