CHARLES H. COLBY, OF EAST BALDWIN, MAINE.
ROTARY-FILLER HEATER FOR CORN-COOKERS.
Application filed September 28, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. COLBY, citizen of the United States, residing at East Baldwin, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary-Filler Heaters for Corn-Cookers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rotary filler heaters for corn cookers, and its object is to provide means for heating the filler by steam, whether the filler be at rest or in operation, and to include a valve for controlling the amount of steam thus employed independently of the steam supplied to any other portion of the apparatus.
By the use of my invention, whenever the corn in the filler from whatever cause falls below the safe canning heat, additional heat may be at once locally supplied i1 ithout delay or inconvenience and the troubles and risk above referred to entirely avoided.
My invention may be applied to such fillers as that shown in. Patent of the United States, N 0. 478885, issued to Cr. VJ. Merrell, April 26, 1892.
I accomplish the object set forth by fashioning and assembling the parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of
. which- Figure 1 is a side View partly in vertical section, showing a rotary filler with my invention applied, and Fig. 2 represents a top plan view of a portion of the filler, exhibiting pillip curved steam pipe arranged within the Like letters are used to refer to the same parts throughout the specification and drav; mgs.
Considering the dravrings, the cooker A by way of the spout B discharges cooked corn into the filler C arranged adjacently and usu ally slightly lower. The filler C is attached to a revoluble sleeve D, suitably supported in vertical bearings E attached to the frame of the apparatus. The sleeve is rotated by gears F and G driven by the horizontal shaft H.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 6, 1909.
Serial No. 395,027.
Conveniently arranged above the machine is a steam pipe J, in which is the T designated by the reference letter K. The pipe L, including valve M, passes downwardly from connection "with the T mentioned and the lower end of the pipe has an elbow m to which is oined the curved spray pipe N arranged as sho'i n within the filler in such manner as to avoid interference with the rotation of the filler. The perforations in the pipe, directed toward the center of the filler are marked a. It is believed to be now clear that the contents of the filler maybeheated locally at any time independently of the re mainder of the apparatus, and this local heating may be effected Whether the filler be at rest or in motion.
The parts illustrated in connection with this invention are substantially those show-.11 in Fig. 7 of the Merrill patent referred to. The vertical rod P is stationary being held in the head of bracket Q. To the top of rod P the plate it is secured, and as the filler C revolves the plate covers and uncovers the opening 0, leading to the measuring chamber S, which, with its outlet tubes T revolves vith the filler C.
Having now described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim isl. A cooker in combination with a rotary receiving chamber and filler, and means for heating the said chamber r-xhile at rest and permitting its rotation.
2. A cooker in combination with a rotary receiving chamber and filler, and a perforated steam pipe arranged nithin the said cham her for heating the chamber n hile at rest and permitting its rotation.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES H. COLBY.
Witnesses:
DAVID LoWENsTnIN, A. Ln ROY MOCARDELL.
