Description

. SYLVESTER J.
iitnitd tatee prima eine.
TUCKER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO .ADAM
RUSH, OF SAME PLACE, FOR ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT. I
Letters Patent No. 91,690, dated June 22, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN WRITING-DESK ,CALEINZIILAR.I
The Schedule referred to in these Letters `Patent: and making part of the same.
Writing-Desk (or Inkstand-Oase) and Calendar; and
I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, suicient to enable others skilled in the art to which myinvention appertains, to 'make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in whichy v Figure 1 isa front elevation ofthe combined writingdesk, or inkstand-case, and calendar.
Figure 2, a rear view of the dial-plate, showing the calendar-mechanism.
This invention consists in so combining the calendar-mechanism with the locking-catch of a writingdesk, that bythe turning of thelcey which releases the catch, the `wheelsl composing the calendar-mechanism are rotated, and indicate, by pointers, on suitable dials, the day of the week, the day of the month, the name of the month, and the year, as will be hereinafter fully described.
In the drawings- A represents the case of the writing-desk and ca endar.
B represents the door of the case, which may be hinged at its lower edge, and is provided with a suitable knob, a. I
Above` the knob a,- on the inside of the door, is placed the catch-plate, which Vreceives a catch, l), on the square c.
On this square is also iixed an eccentric arm, d.
As the square c is turned, by means of a snit-able key, to release the catch, the arm d raises a pivoted lever, e, to the opposite ends of which are jointed pawls or detents, f g.
. The pawl f, engaging .with the teeth of a ratchetwheel, ai, pushes the latter the distance of one tooth each time the lever e is raised.
The ratchet-wheel a has thirty-one teeth, corresponding to the number of days in a month, and on the outer end of its arbor is xed a pointer, which moves around over a dial divided into thirty-one spaces, `properly numbered.
At' each operation `of the lever e, the detent g, engaging with the teeth of a ratchet-wheel, t, rotates said wheel the distance of a tooth.
The wheel fi is made with seven teeth, one for each day of the week, and an index omits arbor points to 'the designated space ou the dial.
j is a wheel having twelve teeth, one for each month of the year4 This wheel receives motion by the following means:
Y A tappet, k, on wheel n, once in each revolution of said wheel, in other words, once a month, comes in contact with the teeth of a'wheel, l, having twelve teeth, and turns the same one-twelfth of a revolution.
This wheel l gears with the wheel j, also having, as above statedtwelve teeth, corresponding to the Anumber of months in al year, and eaclrpartial rotation of wheellimpnrts thesame (onctwelfth revolution) to wheel j, 'which carries on the outer end of its arbor j an indicator, which points out the name ofthe month. A tappet, o, on wheel l, comes, once during the rev olution of said wheel, or, once a year, in contact with a wheel, h, and turns the same the space of one tooth.
The teeth on this wheel may be of any desired num.
ber, according to the range of years throughout which it is intended that the calendar shall be correct.
A pointer cnthe arbor of wheel h indicates` the onr=` rent year.
The arbors of the day, week, month, and year-wheels may project at the rear, s'o that they can be adjusted,
should occasion require. l It is necessary that the arbor of the day-wheel thus project, because, when the month is composed of less than thirty-one days, the ,pointer t must be adjusted separately. When the period of years marked on the dial p has expired, a new dial can be substituted, and the usefulness of the calendar thus extended indenitely.
q 'represents a spring, which keeps the lever e in the `-position shown, and thus controls the catch.
A spring, fr, shown in red in iig. 1, causes the door to ily open as soon as unlocked.
It' desired, a pen-rack may be fixed inside the door.
The advantages of my invention will be appreciated when it is. remembered that the adjustment of dctached calendars is frequently overlooked, and trouble thereby occasioned.
Having thus described my invention, NVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is j In combination with the fastening-device of a writingdesk, theV calendar-mechanism herein described, consisting ofthe pivoted lever e and pawls f g, operated by means of an arm on the square c, whereby the unlocking of the desk will move the pointers of the calendar, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
To the above I have signed my name, this 8th day 'i of March, 1869.
' SYLVES'IER J. TUCKER.
