Description

.L. ROBINSON, L. 'CONI @stmt @wird tltedl tstea Leners Patent No; 91,670, zaad .new 22, 1869.
IMPRo'vnMENT rN FELTINGAMAGHINES.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and mkingpart vof the same.
To all whom it may concern:
,Be it known that we, L, VRorNsoN, L. 001mm, N. EHAYATT, and D. W..HYA TT, of Matteawan, `in the county of Dutchess, andiffStat-eof New York, have invented a new and improved Machine for Felting Hat-Bodies; and-we do hereby declare that the fot lowing isa full, clear, and exact description.. thereof, which will enable others skilled in -theart to make and use the same, reference being had-to the accompanying drawings, forming part of lthisspecification.
This invention relates to improvements in machines for felting hat-bodies, designed to providev a means for accomplishing the same iu a better manner than as at ,present done.
The invention consists in an arrangement of maf ohinery for felting the tips of hats more evenly than can be done by the machines now in use. Also, for
Yfelting the sides, on a block so formed as to be inserted within the crown of the hat, the latter being turned thereon, to cause the Whole to undergo the felting-op eration, all as hereinafter more fully specified.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal sectional elevation of ourimproved machine, taken on the line :v
' upon the tops thereof, after which'weremove them therefrom, and place them on the block G, as shown atD, fig. 3,1so formed that it enters the interior space of the hat-bodies iu a manner to -interpose only the singleweb between the block and the jgger E, or
other felting-device, a portion only of the sides of the bodies being exposed to the felting-operation.
VTo subject the whole to the action of thejiggei on the block, we turn the bodies slowly around as the,
operation progresses.V
Hitherto the hat-bodies have been folded down into.
dat shape for' felting, thin plates of pasteboard, or other suitable material, being placed between the two layers to prevent them from uniting under the felting# operation.
When so arranged, they were itted in packs, upon a former similar. to that represented at O, fig. 2.
vUnder this method, la seam is formed in the sides of the crown, extending over the top, where the fabric is not well felted, and the top is not as Well finished as by our method, by which the seam is wholly avoided in the sides, and the top much more thoroughly felted. The employment of the dividing-plates is Ialso avoided.
Having thus described our invention, l
We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arrangement, in a felting-machine, ofthe formers A C, of the shape shown and described, with the jiggers E, for the purpose of felting the tips and bodies of hats at separate successive operations, substantially as herein shown and described.
The abovespecification of our invention. signed by us, this day of 1869.
. L. ROBINSON.
L. CONllN E. N. F. HYAT'IX D. W. HYATT.
