ALBERT A LTSTADTER, OF HUNTINGTON, IN DIANA.
FIRE-ESCAPE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 23, 1909.
Application llled June 25, 1908. Serial No. 440,325.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALBERT ALTsTAD'rER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington, in the county of Huntington and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Fire-Escape, of which the following is a specification.
`he invention relates to improvements in tire escapes.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of iire escapes, and to provide a simple, inexpensive and ellicient re escape, adapted in a room or a artment when not in use and capable of being quickly arranged for use and of being easily controlled and o erated for enabling a person to lower himse f safely to the ground as slowly or rapidly as desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lire escape having exceedingly simple controlling means devoid of brakes or locking devices liable to get out of order, or requiring skill for their manipulation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed ,out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that va-v rious changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departin from the spirit or sacrificing an of the a vantages of the invention.
n the drawing Figure 1 is a erspective view of a fire escape, constructed) in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
The re escape comprises in its construction a pair of ropes or cables 1 and a substantially triangular frame 2, constructed of steel or other suitable material, and composed of a horizontal bottom rod or portion 3 and upwardly conver ing inclined sides 4. The frame is provide at the top or a ex with a top guiding eye 5 through which oth of the ropes or cables pass, and the sides are equipped with upper, lower and intermediate eyes 6, 7 and 8. The frame is preferably formed of a piece of rod metal, united at its ends and coiled or twisted at the top or apex of the frame to form an enlarged guiding eye. The rod is also coiled or bent to form the upper, lower to be compactly storedy l and intermediate eyes, and all of the said eyes are arranged exteriorly of the frame.
rThe ropes or cables are rove through the eyes of the sides, each side rope or cable extending dov` nward from the top guiding eye to the bottom guiding eye 7 and then passing upward longitudinally of the side to the upper guiding eye 6, and then donne ard to the bottom guiding eye. The lacing of the ropes or cables through the eyes creates sullcient friction to enable the descent of the device to be easily and conveniently controlled by gras in the ropes and the sides of the frame. y oosening the grip the person using the lire escape may descent as rapidly as desired. A slight tightening of the grip on the ropes or cables and the frame will check the downward movement of the device.
The lower rod or member 3 of the frame constitutes the seat, and the device is equipped at a point between its top and bottom with a back band or support J of webbing, or other suitable material permanently secured at its end l0 to one side of the l1 rame and equipped at its other end with a snap hook 1l for engaging the other side of the frame. The end 10 of the webbing is preferably doubled to form a loop or eye to receive the adjacent side of the frame, and the snap hook detachably engages the opposite side of the frame. Any other suitable means, how ever, may be employed for connecting the back band or support to the sides of the frame. The back band or support is adapted to extend around a person sitting on the lower bar or member 3 of the triangular frame, and it will enable the lire escape to be used with erfect safety. The intermediate eyes S of t 1e inclined sides of the Aframe are located below the ends of the back band or support to prevent the same from slipping downward on the sides of the frame.
The ro es or cables depend from the bottom of t e frame to the ground, and thc descent of the frame may b'e controlled from the ground by holding one or both of thc ropes more or less tight. The upper ends of the ropes or cables are designed to be suitably anchored, and a person may easily lower himself from a window, or other elevated point with perfect safety.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A lire escape including a pair of ropes or uuoles, nud u frame composed oi spueed sides und e. connecting )ortion forming u seat, seid sides heing provi ed with guiding ineens und the ropes heilig spaced upairt und rove through thix guiding means.
L. A tiro eeen ie including u l'iunie having spared sides :ind :L ronneoting portion forniing :l sont. suid sides being provided with spaced guiding ineens, n hurl; hund or support ronneeted with the sides above the sezit, und ropes or oztbles spaced apart :ind rove through the guiding moons of the sides.
l. A ire eseu )e including u treme having spared sides und provided with n connecting hottoni portion forming n. seut, said frame being provided :it the top with :i guide und having spaced guides ait t ie seid sides, und a pair of ropes or oubles passing through the top guide und spaced :ipurt below the sume, the upper portion being rove through the guiding ineens of the sides of the freine.
i. A iire escupe ini-.hiding un upproximately triungular frame composed of inclined sides, and u eonneeting bottom portion forming n. seat, seid fi'urne being provided :it the top with :i guiding eye and having opposite spaced guiding eyes lo cuted ndjau'ent to the terininuls of the sides of the tranne, :uid u pair or' ropes or Gables through the spaced eyes.
5. A fire escupe including an approximately triangular frame provided :it the top l with a. guiding eye and having upper, lower and intermediate eyes at the sides, e pair of l ropes o1' cables passing through the top guiding eye and rove through the upper and lower eyes of the sides of the frame, und :i beck bend or support connected with the sides of the frame above the intermediate eyes.
6. A I'ire escape including an approximately triangular frame consisting of e. rod bent to form en enlarged top guiding eye at the apex of the freine und coiled et opposite sides to form eXteriorly zii-ranged eyes, und a pair of ro )es or cables both of which extend through t e top guiding eye, seid ropes or cables being spaced apart below the upper guiding eye and rove through the other eyes.
In testimony, that l claim the foregoing es my own, l have hereto efiixed my signeture in the presence of two Witnesses.
