TRACE-HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JAMES W. TRACY and JOHN T. TRACY, citizens of the United States, residing at Smithland, in the county of Livingston and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Trace-Holder; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention about to be set forth pertains to a new and useful band or strap connection, in other Words a trace carrier, to be used in connection with plow harness.

The invention in its fundamental principles directs as its essential object to provide a device of this Character which is simple and eflicient in construction and durable `in use, as will be clearly manifest.

The invention aims as a further objeotto provide a device as above set forth which will allow bands, straps or traces'to be easily and quickly attached or detached, and at the same time when the'strap or traces are attached, the same will be held securely to the carrier, as will be seen in the drawings.

The invention aims as a further object to provide a device of this design comprising a single piece of metal, one end of which is formed into a roll for the reception of a strap to which the said device is fastened, while the major portion of the plate is provided with a rectangular opening into which a curled tongue projects, and which tongue projects from the edge of said opening, and is adapted for connection, by the end of a band strap or traces; the roll is provided' with means upon its inner circumference, adapted to frictionally engage the said strap so as to prevent accidental displacement of the device, which means comprises a wire bent upon itself and then the bent portions are twisted together, leaving a projecting end to be inserted and carried in an aperture of the said roll. rThis twisted wire is designed to be permanently carried by the roll, that is,in its preferred embodiment, but, if desired, the projecting end of the same whichis bent after its insertion in said aperture, may be straightened, so as to allow the twisted wire to be removed, as will beevident.

This invention com rises further objects and combinations of elements which will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof will be pointed out by the appended claims.

The features, elements and the arrangement thereof, which constitute the above entitled` invention, may be changed and varied,`that is to say, in an actual reduction to practice, with the understanding that the changes and variations accruing `from said reduction to ractice are limited to the scope of the appen ed claims.

To obtain a full and correct understanding of the details of construction, combinations of features, elements and advantages, reference is to be had to the hereinafter set forth description and the accom anying drawings in connection therewith, wlierein- Figure 1 is a pers ective view of the device applied to a strap, ut it may be applied to any other means as desired. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the device and strap on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the device. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the twisted wire removed from the roll.

In regard to the drawings, wherein similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the several illustrations, by figures, 1 designates a leather strap to which the device is fixed or attached. This device in its preferred embodiment comprises a plate 2 which is substantially triangular in plan view and the broadest portion of which, as at 3, is formed into a roll 4, which roll, as will be seen in Fig. 1, receives the said strap. Carried within the roll, or disposed therein, is means or a wire 5, which frictionally engages said strap, as will be seen clearly in the cross sectional view of Fig. 2. This wire is bent upon itself, as at 6, as seen in Fig. 5, and the remaining portions thereof are twisted together, as seen at 7, so as to form an undulated surface, which will prevent displacement of the strap. One of the portions which is twisted about the other is slightly extended, as seen at 8, and is bent at an angle, as will be observed by referring to the reference character 9, which bent ortion is inserted through an aperture 10 o said roll, after which the free extremity of said extension is slightly bent to prevent removal or accidental displacement of said means or twisted wire, as will be clearly observed upon reference to the accompanying drawings. The remaining portion of the plate 11, is provided with a rectangular opening 12, from one edge of which a tongue 13 projects, and which is coiled slightly within said opening, as seen at 14. This coiled tongue is adapted for the purpose of allowing a ring 15 of bands, straps er traces 16 to be connected, and which will be prevented from removal by the disposition of the said tongue. To connect rings of bands, straps or traces to said tongue, the same are engaged with the coiled portion of the tongue, as seen in Fig. 1, after which a slight pressure is applied te the rings erother means so as to slightly raise the tongue, and which will raise for the reason that the same is formed of resilient metal, or the same may be thin enough so as te allow of a slight ilexibility, thereby easily and quickly allowing the rings to be connected to the tongue, as will be readily and clearly understood.

From the foregoing, the essential features, elements and the operation of the device, tegether with the simplicity thereof, will be clearly apparent.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful, is

1 In a device as set forth, a metallic plate, a roll formed at one end thereof for the reception of a strap, means disposed within the roll to prevent the removal of the device or the displacement of the strap, said plate having a rectangular opening with a curled or coiled tongue projecting from one of its edges adapted as means to which a ring of a band, strap or traces may be connected.

2. In a device as set forth, a plate, a roll formed at one end thereof for the reception of a strap, means disposed within the roll to prevent the removal of the device or the displacement of the strap and provided with a lateral extension, said roll having an aperture to receive said extension, said extension being bent to prevent removal of said means, said plate having a curled tongue te which a ring of a band, strap or traces may be connected.

In a device as set forth, a plate having one end formed into a roll for the reception of a strap, means disposed within the roll to prevent removal of the device or displacement of the strap, comprising a wire bent upon itself and having portions thereof twisted together, means projecting from said wire, said rell having an a )erture for the reception of said means, sai means being previded with means to prevent disconnection thereof from within the aperture, said plate having a curled tongue te which a ring of a band, strap or traces may be connected.

4. ln a device as set forth, a metallic plate triangular in plan view and having its broadest portion formed inte a roll for the reception of a strap, means disposed within the roll to prevent removal of the device er displacement ef the strap comprising a wire bent u )on itself and having portions thereof twiste together, said roll having an aperture, said wire having means projecting therefrom for insertion in said aperture, and provided with a bent portion to prevent removal of said means, said plate having a curled tongue to which a ring of a band, strap or traces may be connected.

5. In a device as set forth, a metallic plate triangular in plan view and having its broadest portion formed into a roll for the reception of a strap, said roll having an aperture, means disposed within the roll to prevent removal ofthe device or displacement of the strap, comprising awire bent upon itself having portions thereof twisted together and provided with a lateral extension adapted to be received by said aperture and having a bent portion to prevent removal of the same from within said aperture, said plate having a rectangular opening, a curled tongue proj ecting from one edge thereof to which a ring of a band, strap or traces may be connected.
