Description

C. H. MILLER.
KITGHEN RANGE. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 10, 1907.
JNVENTOR.
Y'VWITNESSES: 4 MM. 19 /wrlaHJIiller' A TTO NE YS UNITED STATES P T NT onanrrs n. MILLER, or BROOKLYN, OHIO.
KITCHEN-BAN GE No. 915,986; Specification 01 Letters Patent. Patented March 28, 1909.
application filed June 10, 190i. sum n. 315,059.
pivoted pawl or stop 17 is shown to engage T all whom it may cancer a: be seen. If coal or woodbe burned and th Be it known that I, CHARLES H. MILLER, a fi're is well started the draft will be from over citizen of. the United States, residing at the top of ,the rangfii down at the rear of the I Brooklyn, in the county of Cuyahoga'and ovenand beneatht esar'netoexitorexhaust 60 5 State of Ohio, have invented certain new and 4 openlngBcontrolled by dltinper 8. But ifgas useful Improvements in Kitchen-Ranges, burner b'eused' the lance draft will beg-11st and do declare that the following is a full, thereverseof thisand theexit-fortheprofiucts clear, and exact description of the invention, of combustion upward through the opening at which will enable others skilledin the art to. the top of the ran e controlled b damper 10. .65 which it appertains to make and use the In the first case t e roducts o combustion same. ass downward, an in the latter upward,- My invention relates to improvements in ut for starting the coal or wood fire upper kitchen ranges which are provided with fire damper 10 is usually 0 mad toget a dlrect pots as usual adapted to use solid fuel, such draft and qulck fire; amperj 10,15 prefer-I0 15 as wood and coal, a gas or vapor burner 10- ably under separate hand control, as usual.
cated beneath the oven se arate from said In addition to these draft dampers there Is fire pot, whereby either solid or liquid fuel also a special burner damper or plate: 12, can be used as may be found convenient, all hinged above or over gas burner B' and substantially as shown and described and adapted to swing down and close the charm 20 particularly pointed out in the claims. her or space wit in which said burner 1s lo- In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is cated and thus reestablish draft conditions 'a perspective view of akitchen or cooking for use of hard fuel in 'the fire pot. But range embodying my invention and in which when gas is to be used and not the hard fuel the front portion has been broken away to 7 said plate is raised so as to open the burner to- 25r disclose the location of the fluid burner. the heating space beneath the oven whence Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the range with the heat and products of combustion flowthe front plate thereof removed and the rearward beneath the oven and find exit burner broken off at the front, and Fig. 3 is a through to'p damper 10. When thus raised vertical cross section of the range substanplate 12 also serves to protect the'bottom of 30 tially on line 33, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perthe oven immediately over the burner from spective view of the damper for the bottom exce sive heat at that'point and from burn draft space of the range and the crank and in out. link connections betweenthe same. ower draftdamper 8 is directly associated U The range as herein shown is of somewhat with gas burner plate 12, 'becausewhen said 35 special and exclusive construction independplate is raised and the burner is used damper ently of said burner in.that it has a bottom 8 must necessarily be closed.' Hence I have air or draft space, indicated by 2, through shown said parts 8 and 12 as mechanically which fresh air is drawn and heated as it and operatively associated one with thepasses through the same from without into other in such manner that when plate 12 is 40 the ash pit and thence up intothe fire pot. raised, as in Figs. 2 and 3, damper 8 will be Walls or plates 3 and 4 constitute the up er automatically closed, and when said plate and lower sides of this draft space and wal or is lowered over burner B said. damper Wlll be platen represents the bottom of the oven. opened. Of course these parts could be dis- Urdinar'ily, for hard fuel alone, plate 3 is exassociated and operated separately, but this 45 tended up against the inner wall of the ash is not the preferred way. Hence I provide p1t,but in the present construction said plate plate 12- with a hinge wire or rod 14 which is provided with a drop? to form a gas supports said plate over chamber a and burner chambernext to said ash pit 'and burner B and which wire or rod extends be.- which has air openings at from space 2 into yond the ends 'of said plate relativel as 50 said gas chamber. A heating space 6 for the shown, and each extremity of which is )ent oven extends from said burner about the rear at right angles as indicated at 15 and 16 reof the oven to the top thereof, as usual, and spectively. End or extremity 15 comes to draft flue F extends from bottom to top of the outside of the range at the front and the ran eat its rear as usual'and has darn er forms a handle or armto control the throw 5 control ed openings into the same both be ow of plate 12 to open or closed position, and. a
and above the oven, as usual andas will now I said extremity 15 and hold the said plate 12 open. At its opposite end arm 16 is connested by link 18 with a right angled arm 19 on damper 8, and said link has free connections at both ends so that the rotation of plate 12 on its hinge from closed position, Fig; 1, to open position, Fig. 2, will give damper 8 a quarter turn and close the same. Then as said plate 12 is closed the damper 8 is opened, and both parts are simultaneously operated through lever or arm 15.
Any suitable form of fluid burner B may be used, and with which it is racticable to burn both solid and fluid fue at the same time. I do not plan todo this, but rather provide a range with convenient alterations,
as to the fuel, depending on local conditions. Obviously, if the gas should for any reason fail, as often occurs in cities using natural gas, solid fuetean at once be substituted and no eat inconvenience be incurred.
- at. I claim is 1'. A kitchen range having an oven with a heating space about the same and a draft flue atits rear with top and "bottomoutlets, a fluid burner pivoted beneath the front of the oven, a plate adapted to open and close over said burner and a, damper for said bottom outlet operatively connected with said plate. 2. A Kitchen range having an oven with a heating space aboutthe same and a draft flue open to said space both above and below direct heat of the burner and to open said heating space to the burner.
4. A kitchen range having a fire pot and an oven with a heating space about the same,
and up erand lower outlets from said space,
in com ination with a fluid burner in said space, a plate hinged to open and close said space in-res set to the burner, a damperfor t e lower 0 said outlets having linked con- I nection with said plate and a damper to con trol the upper of said outlets.
In testimony whereof'I sign this specifieationin the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES H. MILLER.
