To all where it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS GREENWOOD, subject of His Majesty the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at The Shrubbery, Wolverley, near Kidderminster, in the county of Worcester, England, mechanic, have invented new and useful Improvements in Looms for the Manufacture of Tufted or Pile Fabrics, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to looms for the manufacture of tufted or pile fabrics and more particularly of carpets or fabrics of the kind known as Royal Axminster or moquette.

A-loom of the kind to which this invention relates is described in the speoificaton of British Letters Patent No. 15,680 of 1890 and various improvements in the same loom are described in the subsequent British specifications Nos. 11,268 of 1891 24,086 of 1892, 11,397 of 1894 and 1,095 of 1900.

In a loom of the kind above referred to the pile of the carpet or fabric is formed of tufts which are severed from the pileyarns in the yarn carriers and are brought forward by grip ers which lay the tufts against the fell of t e carpet where the tufts are bound into the carpet by the weft when the latter is beaten up by the slay. In this kind of loom there is an upper horizontal comb or bar extending across the width of the fabric and having a combined upward and backward movement followed by a downward and forward movement whereby the tufts when released by the grippers are brought up into a vertical position as described in the British specification No. 11,268 of A. D. 1891 above referred to. As usually. constructed this 11 per comb or bar iscarried by two stay rodsw hich are jointed to levers or bell cranks at the sides of the loom and in an extra Wideloom further stays are sometimes provided for the top comb or bar in the form. of a lurality of intermediate arms or levers xed thereto and keyed to a cross shaft carried by. the free ends of a pair of arms. These intermediate arms or levers being fixed to the top comb or bar and to the cross shaft cannot be 7 adjusted so as to set any required part of the top comb or bar nearer to or farther from the cross shaft so as to fix the top comb or bar exactly in a straight line to agree with the top row of tufts as they are placed in the fell by the grippers. This defect I overcome by my invention which I will describe by referring to the accompanyin drawings on which Figure '1 is a plan of the-upper horizontal comb and accessories with my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of t e same; Fig. 3 is a sectionalside elevation of the same drawn on a larger scale.

On my drawings the top comb or bar is marked a and the twolevers by which its ends are carried from the cross shaft 11 are respectively marked 0 and d. I provide one two or more intermediate stay bars or-levers e between the end levers c and d and these intermediate stay bars or levers e are soldered or otherwise fixed to the top edge of the top comb or bar a above the tufts and are carried toward the front of the loom at right angleslto the comb or bar a and are adjus'tably fixed to the top of the horizontal shaft 1) by a set screw f which passes through longitudinal slots 9 in the stay bars e and are screwed into the shaft I) thus enabling the tudinally, that is crosswise of the shaft b, so that the top comb or bar a can be set laterally and fixed exactly in a-strai ht'line to agree with the top row of tufts as t vey are placed in the fell by the grippers.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is fabric s, the combination with the. upper horizontal comb extending across the whole width of the fabric, of a horizontal shaft connecting together the end levers of the comb, intermediate stay bars fixed at one end to said horizontal comb between its end su ports and having slots in their other en s, and screw bolts, passing through said slots into-said horizontal'shaft so as to permit of the lateral adjustment of the comb relatively to the shaft.
