Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 12, 1908. Serial No. 452,787.
and I do hereby declare that the following is l a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, economical and effective separator fol; cleaning andscouring pulse, berries or the The machine is particularly designed for the peas being passed through the machinev for the purpose of separating thistlcs or other foreign substances therefrom, together' with imperfect or split peas, and at the same time said peas are thoroughly scoured by being precipitated into a water bath.:
The invention therefore consists in various details of construction and combination of parts as hereinafter fully described with refsubsequently claimed.
In the drawings:v Figure 1 represents a longitudinal sectionalview of'a separator embodying the features of my invention, and Fig. 2, a detail cross-section, as indicated by line 2-2 of Fig. 1v.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, 1 indicates a tank adapted to be partlally height of the same berear lend of said tank. i Water is supplied to the tank by means of a'feed-pipe 3 extending across the same and provided with a series of discharge apertures. The feed-pipe is adjacent the front end of the tank, 1tsdischarge apertures being directed toward the rear of said tank and thus when Water is admitted a current is maintained toward the overflow, it being preferable, as shown'to place 4the feed-pipe at such an elevation with relationA to the overflow, that said feedpipe Will be cured to the frontend ofthe tank, therebeing a vertically disposed inclined wire screen 5 secured to the tank directly under the feedhopper constitutingpa deliector. Thisfiscreen horizontally disposed inclined endless conidle roller and adriven roller] uand 8 respectively, the driven roller 8 bein located at the posed of a canvas belt front end and adjacent the ottom ofthe 'overhang rear endof the tank, in which ends said idle roller is hung.
The endless conveyer is preferably comhavingcrosswise lags 10 secured to the outer face thereof, these lags serving to carry the perfect and cleansed peas which are precipitated thereon 7upward through the water and into a delivery hopper 11 at the rear of the tank.
An apertured cover comprising a screen 12 is secured to the tank and extends parallel with the inclined endless belt from a point about midway ofthe length of the tank. The lower end of the screen 12 terminates adjacent the deflector throat is formed between .the screens through which the peas, due to specific gravity, pass to the conveyer. screen cover terminates wit tension which projects above'the Water-line of the tank, serving as a Wall against which accumulated' thistles-or other chaff are deflected. Directly forward of the hopper and mounted in suitable bearings carried by the tank is a shaft 18, which shaft carries a paddle-wheel 14 that is driven by a pulley in cross-belt connectionwith the driven roller 8e The blades of this paddle-wheel are arranged to contact with the water, and owing to their direction of rotation assist the discharge pipe 'in creating a current 'floating foreign matter are de ected back screen 5, wherebyv av of Water.A toward the rear of the tank whereby.v light articles-of The up er end of the a vertical exupon the screen cover, Which cover acts as a trap for the same,
Wheel also serving to keep the Water clear of the action of the paddle-J screenings directly under the hopper 4. In
order to prevent peas from falling between the belt-edges and walls of the tan and also sagging of the upper stretch of belt, I have 4provided strips 15, which strips are secured to said tank directly under" the upper stretch of the canvas body of the conveyer,-whereby the latter is supported in its passage rear'-v ward tothe delivery ho per.
It will be seen from t Ye foregoing idescri tionthat unscreened-peas discharged into t el feed-hopper 4, Will pass through the water and guided by the screens, the upper, stretch of the conveyor.v L1ght forei n matter, such as thstles, etc., is
cang t by the water,v and owing to its spebe delivered upon i t ilo eiiie gravity, be floated rearward above the ecreenwoverV upon which they will inally he delivered end trapped due to the current ereated by the paddle-Wheel and water feedpipe. Thus all screenings will be separated from the sound peas, split peas being sinnlarly separated due to their spee-ilio gravity, vwhile the sound cleansed peas will be deli vere Aby the belt to the hopper ll. When the screenings have accumulated upon the sereen-eover in su'llieient quantities, the operator removes the saine, thus maintaining a eleer passage between the paddle-Wheel and screen 5 whereby the material fed is etlectively cleansed,
l claim:
l. A separator comprising a tank, an inelined endless driven eonveyer extending into the tank below the level of a body of Water therein, a deileotor above the conveyer adjacent to the lower end of same, a vented 'oever above `said conveyor approximately parallel thereto forward of the delleetor, and
ineens for creating a current of the water in said tank through the vented Cover toward said conveyor.
2. A separator comprisingl a tank, an inclined endless driven eonveyer extending into the tank below the level ol a body of Water therein, a delleetor above the conveyor adjacent to the lower end of same, a vented `eover y above said eenveyer approximately parallel thereto forward ol the defleotor, an apertured Water-leed' pipe located adjacent to eiee Said dellec'tor, the direetion ol' the pipe apervf screen, an apertnred water leed-pipe adjacent to the detleetor screen, the direction ot' the pipe apertures being; toward the srreen oever, end a driven pnddlenvheel adjacent to the We ter feed-pipe el; Aseparritor. comprising a tank, an inelined endless driven conveyor extending; int o the tank below the level of a bod)v of water .therein a delleetor above the onvever adncent tothe lovver end ot same, a vented rever above said conveyor approxinmtoly parallel thereto forward of the detleetor,-,and a driven paddle-Wheel loeated adjaeent to the delle(-p tor, the paddle-heel beiner adapted to ere ate a Current ot' water toward the vented cover.
