Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March '16, 1909.
Application ed August 28, 1908. Serial No. 450,645.
To (di, whom it may concern.:
Be it known that' i, ABRAHAM L. A. Hin- Miii.\\'rieiii, ii citizen oi' the United Sintes, residing t Yew York, county of New York, iiiid Stute of New York, have invented certiiiii new iind useful lmprovciiients in (foncrete Beam Protection, iiilly described iiiid represented in the following speciiciitioniiiid the accompanying drawings, forming u piirt of the sinne. y Theobdiect of the present invention is to provided an improved iireproof protection for the webs of inetzti beams in concrete iioor constructions.
'The invention is especially intended for the dec-p main beams commonly vcelled girders, but is applicable to beams of any depth.
it .is new common in tireproof buildin s to employ it loyer of concrete on each sine of the benin web, which is usually filled in with und forms ii part of the iioor concrete, ind is usiisily continued around the underside of the benin to fireprooi the benin throughout. it is found in practice, however, that this concrete along the web of the i in is liiible to breuk oit, especiiiily in deep ir. .nis iiiliei'e the distance between the extcndeigl body of concrete tit the top of the benin :ind the body of concrete around the bcri'oiii ienges is considerable. This dili` corti: has not been avoided even by iiinliing he concrete on the opposite sides of the web iiiucn thicker than is nec issiiry for tireprooi'- ing, und n irei'iver such excessive thickness ci coi'icrc iidds gr itlj; to the weight on thc beitnis, Vwnich is Vvery objectioiizible, especiiilly in long; s'iiiiis i provide en eiih it protection toi' the webs oi" beams oi ur dep vh, iivoidii'ig lill dsnger of tlr. conci. i -ffing oil' und cn- ;ibiiiig' the thickness of the concrete to be reduced. substainiiiilly to that required for i reprooiing', by the use ol suitable concrete devices extending along trie benin o :ind substantially the full web depth ol. tlc beam, by which the concrete is iirnily anchored to the beem. The holding devices ir ."eriihly consist metal plates on opposides of :ind bolted through the benin web, with anchoring rods extending between the piiites. Metallic `liitliing may be laced to the rods eind the concrete protection packed iii between the ietliing and benin :ind the iinisli then applied outside the lething, or wooden centering muy be used in :i'ppiying l.the concrete, sind the metallic latliing embedded in the concrete if desired.
In the iiccompanying drawings forming it port of this specification, I have shown constructions embodying the invention in preferred forms and these constructions will. now be described in detail :ind 'the features forming the invention then be specifically pointed out in the claims.
ln the drewings:-Figure 1 is a vertical section of e portion of zi' concrete floor, showing a girder provided with my concrete web protection. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the girder with the holding devices in pliice, but without the concrete. Figs. 3 and 4 nre. views similar to Figs. l and 2 showing my concrete web protection with woven wire lething.
Referring to said drawings the beam or girder A is shown is of the common -form.
B is the concrete floor and C the concrete protection for the bottom flanges, this concrete protection C being shown as held onto the bottom of the bezini by the cli is 10, iis in my Letters Potent No. 786,289, diited April i, i905.
On op )ositesides of the beam web are the bodies o yconcrete D to fire iroof the beam web, this concrete i) being ield on by the holdiiigdevices of my inif'ention. These holding devices iii the preferred form shown consist of angle bars 11 extending vertically on opposite sides oi the beam web and substantirnly the l'ull de th of the beam web, as shown, these fing e bars beiii r held to the bea-iii by bolts 1 passing through one oi their bars preferably at short distances from the boum web so that the concrete will pack in and anchor between the bars und web. This feature oi'i oiisetting the bers from the beam web is not essentiah, however, as the concrete may be anchored only by the anchoring rods 12, which ere passed through openings in the outer flanges of the angle bars 11,so iis to be oilset from the web sufficiently for this purpose. As shown tie plates 13 are used midway between the :ingle bers 11, through which plates 13, the anchoring rods 12 :ire threaded, so es to stiften the rods between the angle bars sind permit the hitterto be placed farther a art.
The construction shown in Figs. 3 sind 4 is exectly the saine as that shown in Figs. 1 end 2, except that metallic lathing, which may be iliiiiges slid the benin, so to thold the :ingle of any suitable form of perforated or reticulated metal, is secured to the rods 12 and embedded in the concrete, woven Wire lathing 14 being shown, which is tied to the rods l2 by ties 2.
It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific form of holding devices shown, nor to the specific construction of' floor or beam in connection with which the invention is illustrated, but that these may be varied Within the invention as defined by the claims.`
What is claimed is l. The combination With a metal beam, of a fieproof' protection for the web, consisting ol? metal plates on opposite sides ofthe beam secured to the beam web, anchoring rods carried by. said lates, and suitable plastic material in Whic said plates and rods are embedded. i j? 2. The combination with a metal beam, of a ireproo protectionfor the web, consisting of metal plates on opposite sides ofthe beam secured to the beam web, anchoring rods carried by said lates, metallic lat/hing se'- cured to said ro s, and suitable plastic n1aterial held by said rodsand lathing.
3. The combination With a beam A, of vertical plates 11 secured to the beam web, horizontal anchoring rods l2 carried by said plates, and concrete D held by said plates and rods.
4. The combination with a beam A,\of vertical plates ll -secured to the beam web, horizontal anchoring rods lgcarried by said plates, metal lathing 14 secliied to said rods,
and concrete D held on the beanrby the rods and lathing.
Iv testimony whereof, I have hereunto set.
my rand, in the presence of two subscribing Wltnesses.
