Specification of Letters latent.
Patented March 16, 1909.
Application filed June 29, 1908. Serial No. 440,907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GoMnR Lnwrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Uniontown, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Rail-Joint; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in rail-joints, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive and efiicient device of this character adapted for use in railroads and mine roads.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of a rail-joint constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the rail chair, with the rails and key removed. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the joint, partly in section.
Referring to the drawings A and B designate the ends of the pair of rails forming a joint, which are seated in a chair 1. The chair is provided with sides 2 and 3, the side 3 being cut away as at 4, to provide for a removable key 7. The side 2 is provided with a projection 5 which engages a recess 6 in one end of the rail.

A portion of the chair is provided with an extension 9 which is bent upon itself as at 10 thus forming a clamp for engaging the lower portion 11 of the key 7. What is claimed is:
Adevice of the class described comprising the abutting ends of rails mounted in a shoe 1, said shoe having sides 2 and 3, the side 2 being provided with an inward projection 5 adapted to engage a recess in one of the rails, the side 3 being cut away at one end, the base portion of said shoe having an extension formed in a loop, and a key adapted to engage said loop and the inner face of the side 3 whereby the several parts are securely locked in their assembled position. v
