Application filed m 5, 1907. Serial No. asazha.
I, GEORGE T. RIDDLE, a
1 citizen of the United States, and resident of Sti Louis,- Missouri, have invented certain new anduseful- Improvements in Packing- Boxes, of which the following is a specifica- .tlon containing a full, clear, and exact descltiption, reference being had to the accom- 'panying drawings, forming a part hereof:
. My invention relates to a ackingbox, my object bein to construct a 021 wherein ma.-
terial andla or is saved, thus simplifying and manufacture; and
cheagening the .cost of with a frame, comwhic box is constructed prising corner posts, end and side rails, and
with panels on viding a very and roviding broad-surfaces on which to nail t e to and bottom of the box.
.To the a ove pur oses, my invention consists in certain noveffeatures of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully set forth, ointed out in the claims, and illustrated in th the ends and sides, thus prois mg drawings, in Whichzper corners of a box of ur'e-l isa transverse section taken verproved construction; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 22' of. Fi 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective-view of one of t e corner posts of my improved box, and showing the end portions of the end and side rails which are fitted to the ends of the corner posts; Fig. 4 'is a perspective .view of one of the upmy im roved construction, with the top remove therefrom. in the construction of my improved box, If make use of four corner pieces, or posts 1 which are rectangular in cross section, and each end of which is provided with a air of ii ielined or beveled faces land 3, W ich' are arranged at right angles to one another,
and each face occupying one-half the area of the end or cross section of the post; andthus transverse edge or dividing line 4 is formed a the upper end ofthe face 2, which line or is midway between the edges of the post.
dis osed groove 5; and formed in the bf t e post, between the lower ends of beveled faces 3, isa vertically disposed roove 6,
both of which grooves receive the siderclges of the nanelswhich form the ends si .es of etedbox. Endrails j are grooves 10', the ends of'which coincide with the ends of-the strong and rigid-construction,
e-accompanyy through the center ofa box of my imture thereof. fed in the edge of each post, between the ends of the beveled faces 2, is-a verti-- on, have their ends beveled, as desi nated, by 8, in order to fit onto the beveled faces 2, and saidrails are rigidly fixed, to the corner posts 1 by corrugated fastening devices, such as' 9, or in any suitable manner; Formed in the under side of the rail.7,'. at the top of thebox, and in the topside of the railat the bottom of thev box,
grooves 5 in the edges of the posts 1; .and when the frame of the box is assembled, rectangular anels 11 are fitted between the posts 1 andt e rails 7, with the edges of said panels occupying the grooves 5 and 10. Side rails 12 have their endsbeveled, as designated by eled faces 3 of the corner posts, and said rails 12 being rigidly fixed to said osts by fasten ing devices, such as 14; and formed in the under side of the top. rail, and in the top ofthe lower rail, are grooves 15, the ends of which coincide with the ends of the groove 6 the corner osts; and when the frame is assembled, si e panels 16 of thin ma terial are arranged between thecorner posts and side rails, with the edges of said side panels occupying the grooves 6 and 15.
The bottom of the box comprises a rectangular section 17, of suitable material, the edges of which are fitted onto the bottom surf-aces of the lower end rails 7 and lower side rails 12, and said bottom being secured in position by nails, or other suitable fastening devices. The top' 18 is a counterpart of the bottom 17 and has its ed es fitted and secured to the top surfaces of t rails 7 and upper side rails 12. Theframe of my improved box, comprising the corner posts '1, and the end and side ralls 7 and 12, provides a very strong and rigid construction, and which is made extra strong and rigid when the end and slde panels 11 and 16 are in position. The, anels 1 1 and 16 can be made of comparative y thin material, thus greatly reducing the amount of lumberrequlred to construct a "box, and consequently reducing the cost of manufac- The frame and body of the box are quickly assembled, as all nailing of thepanels is done away with, and .the arrangement of the side and end rails provides broad surfaces'on.
which to nail or secure tom.-

both ends of which are provided with a pair of rectangular beveled faces, which faces are arranged at right angles to each other, there being a triangular face formed at the center of the post between the pair of rectangular faces, and there being grooves formed in the sides of the corner post for the reception of the side and end panels of the box.
2. In a box of the class described, a corner post constructed of a single piece of material provided OII tWO of its sides with longitudinally disposed rooves for the reception of the side and en panels of the box, and each end of the post being provided with apair of rectan ular faces equal in area, said faces beingincdined and arranged at right angles to each other, there being a triangular face formed at the center of the post between the pair of rectangular faces, and the edges of the outer ends of the. faces occupying the same 20 plane.
3. In a box of the class described, a corner post constructed of asingle piece of material, one end of which is provided with a pair of rectangular faces equal in area, and which 26 faces are inclined and arranged at right angles to one another, and there being a triangular face formed at the center of the post between the' pair of rectangular faces.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my 30
