MACHINE FOR ROLLING, SHAVING, SOFTENING, AND FINISHING LEATHER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 914, dated September 12d, 1838.
To all whom it mag/.concern 1 Be it known that I, THOMAS CHACE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Machines for Rolling, Shaving, Softening, and Finishing Leather, and that the following is a full and correct description thereof.
The machine embracing my said improvement is composed of seven principal parts which are designated. in the annexed draw,- ing by capital letters. a
A is a gallows frame about six feet high and the side posts a athe Same distance apart, between which and firmly connected with them at the botoin stands the platform B over which hangs the brake C, formed of two flat iron pendulous side pieces c c and three roundiron cross bars e e and H secured to the side pieces by nuts and screws at their ends; the whole being' suspended by centers passing through the side posts near their tops into the ends of the upper cross bar at d d. Upon the bottom cross or traverse bar H, is placed the spring and lever D and E in the arrangement of which consists my claim to improvementas above set forth. The end of the spring D is formed into a thimble fitting exactly upon the traverse bar f which should be turned smooth in order that the tliimble of the spring may traverse from end to end freely. The outer ends of the ,spring or springs (which may be made of several thicknesses in the manner of coach springs or otherwise) are secured by nuts and screws upon the top near the end of the lever E which lever is about two feet long and three inches square at the butt. tapering to the handle. Upon the sidesof said lever immediately under the spring and near the traverse bar are placed two side plates h h through the back ends of which passes a bolt on which they are allowed to play close to the sides of the lever E. The platform B which may be made of wood, stone or otherwise, is about two feet high, six long7 and three wide, with its concave surface corresponding with the sweep of the brake, the traverse bar of In front and upon the edge of the platform is 'placed a clamp F moving similar to a door latch upon the pin 7c at one end and falling into the catch m at the other. The oliice of this clamp is to secure the skin or leather, to be worked upon the concave platform.
When the machine is in operation, the mode is as follows: The skin being secured as above, the operator clamps the traverse bar with his left hand at n and the lever E in his right hand at o bearing it down at the same time as the case may require,

to bear upon the leather and which by press ing back the traverse bar is forced in a direct line over and upon the surface of the leather. The lever is then raised, the brake brought back, and the process continued along the traverse bar by sliding the thimble progressively upon the same until the process is completed. In rolling leather and other operations it may be expedient to reverse the spring D, placing the lever E upon the upper side nearly in avertical position and bring the tool to bea-r upon the skin on the back side of the traverse bar in which case the lever must be curved at the plates L` h.
