To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. OLirnANr,
citizen of the United States, residing at Petersburg, in the county of Pike and State. of Indiana, have invented certain new anduseful Im rovements in Fence-Posta 'of which the `fol owing is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide fence posts with improved metal bases so as toma re a lirm, strong, and durable foundaf tion for the lower end vof such posts.
The improved base is equally useful for application to old fence posts the ground ends ofwhich may be.decayed, aswell as for new pd'sts.
`Vlith these and other oolects in view as will more fully appear as the jdescription proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements, and combinations of the partsthat I shall hereinafter fully dein the appended claims.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to inthe following description and indicated inl all the views of the drawings by the same reference characterst The post 1 may be of any size, shape or construction depending upon the particular uselor adaptation. f
The base comprises a foundation 2, a series of plates 3 and 4, and loops 5 and The plates 3 and Llare of similar construction and are arranged at the sides of the post near the lower end or foot thereof and are secured thereto in any substantial way. In the event of the post being 'of rectangular formation in horizontal section, four plates are provided and are secured in any substantial way to the four sides thereof. The upper ends of the four plates have inner flanges 7 which are Ytoothed or serrated to bite into the post to prevent both longitudinal and lateral displacement. The plates are apertured to receive vsuitable fasteningssuch as screws 8 which serve to secure the plates to the post. The lower ends of the plates have outer flanges 9 which are notched at l() intermediate of their` ends. rl`he several plates project below the end of the post to be embedded in the material forming the foundation 2.
The loops 5 and 6 are preferably of stout wire, the upper ends of the side members being engaged with the lower ends of the pro- 'ecting portions of the plates extending beow the posts. Each of the loops is formed of a length of wire bentinto apl'iroximately U- form, the ends of the side members being passed through openings in the projecting ends of the lates and bent so as to engage with said p ates and retain said. loops in place. The end portions of the loops enter the notches 10 ofthe flanges 9, thereby holding'the loops in longitudinal alinement with the post. The loops have a right angular arrangement and one loop is longer than the other as indicated most clearly in Figs. l and 2..
When setting a post provided with a base substantially as'herein indicated, an excavation is formed in the ground of a size to receive the base and leave a space at the bottom and sides thereof. The post is placed in position with its base entered in the hole or excavation and the material forming the foundation, such as concrete, is placed in the hole and tamped therein about the base, and after said material hardens or sets the position of the post becomes fixed. It is observed that the projecting ends of the plates are embedded in the material forming the foundation, therebyfpiieventing any possible play between the post and its base. '.lhe outer flanges 9 serve the two-fold purpose of preventing relative lateral play of the loo s 5 and 6 and to secure firm anchorage of t ie plates in the material forming the foundation 2.
