Letters Patent No, 91,484, dutcd J'uc 15, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINE WORK-PLATE.
Tha Schedule refen-el to :in these Letters Pateut and making pari: of the same,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R-EIIFUSS, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvaniz, have invented an improved \Vorkl'latc'for Sewing-Maclines; andi' do hcrehy dcclare the following to 'be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists in so attaching the circular dctachahle work-platc to the pernancnt work-plote of asei'ing-nachine, as iillydescrihcd he'eafte', that the uppcr snrfaces oi' the two plates, as well as oi' thefastcning-deviccs, shall be in the same plane, there being, consequently, no inpedincnt to the free movement ot' the talrie over the whole, while every facility is at'- irded for gaining access to the shuttleheneath the detachable plate, all ot' which is i'nlly described hereafter.
In order to enable others to make and use my in- Vention, l will now procced to dcscrihe the mode of constructing and applying the same, reference being.: had to the aeonpnnying drawing, which i'orus a part of this specilication, and in which- Figures l and 2 are sectional views` of my improved work-plate for scwing-machines;
l `igures 3 and 4, plan views; and
Figure 5, a detached View, drawn to air enlarged scale.
A represents part of the permanent work-plate of' a sewing-nachine, and in the plate is a circular opening, a, in which is i'orned an annular ledge, b, for reeciving the disk or detachahle plate B, the latter fitting snugly in the said circular opening, and having its upper surface in the same plane with that of the permanent plate A.
Into this plate a set-screw, d, is so introdnced that its flat head e overlaps the edge oi' the plate B, which is recesscd to receive it, the head heing sunk in the middle plate A, but being thinner .than the plate B, so that on the Iatter is forned a lip, e', on which a portion of the head e bea'rs.
It will he observed, on referring to fig. 5 that this lip c' is bent at a slight angle, so that when the lip is inserted beneath the head of the screw (l, the said plate shall have a slight. tend-ncy to spring upwards at its front end, but not suflicient to prevent its being readily depressed to a horizontal position.
A pin, f, is so iitted to the plate A, near the front of the same, as to turn f'eely thereiu, the pin being held in its place above hy the flat head h which tits in a cireulr rccess in the plate A, and below by a small lover, 1), which is Secured to the said pin f by a nut or otherwise.
This pin is so situated that the rim i of[its head !2,
can overlap the plate B to a limited extent, a segnental rccess being made in the said pinte, for the recepiion of a portion oi' the head, the upper surface of which is in the same plane with that ot' the plates A and B. A scgmcntal portion is cut from the edge of the head z, so that when the latter is turned to the position shown in fig. 4, the plate B is free from the head, and will, owin'g to the slight hcnd which is given to its lip a', spring upwards, so :s to elevate its front edge, .as shown in fig. 5, after which the said plate can hc detached by pullihg it outwards free of the head ot' the screw c. (See iig. 1'.)
The platc can he as readily replaced, and can he confine-d, when depressed to its proper position, hy simply turning the pin f so that its head oceupics the position shown in fig. 3.
It will be seen that as the upper surface of the plate B is on the same plane with that oi' the plate A, screwhcad c, and plate h ot' the pin f, there can he no inpedinient to the free movement oi' the fahric over the whole, while every i'aeility is afibrded for gainin, access to the shuttle hcneath the plate B.
l clain as ny invention, and dcsire to secure hy Letters .Patentl. l`he detzchable work-plate B, having two lips, one catching heneath a projection on the base-pinte of the machine, and the other adapted to a projection on a pin, f, turning in the hase-plate, and provided at the lower end with a landle or its equivalent, sulstantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The plate B, with its lip e', bent and adapted to a projcction on the base-pinte, for the purpose specified.
in testnnony whereof', I have signed my nanc to this specification, in the presence of two suhscrihing witnesses.
GEO. REHFUSS.
