SAMUELE BONINI, OF

SHIPPING-PACKAGE HOLDER.
Application filed. May 19,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUELE BoNrNi, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ridgway, in the county 01' Elk and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shipping-Fackage Holders, of which the lollowing is a specificatio'n.
In shipping icecream, milk, butter, and other perishable commodities for distances by train, boat, etc. it is necessary to wrap the packages in blankets or other heat-resisting l'abric alter packing with ice to retain the cold in the package and exclude the heat without, so that the ice will last as long as possible and the article be delivered in good condition. Heretol'ore these packages have been held together by ropes, twine, wire, etc., and such methods have been found to be unsatisfactory because of the danger ol' the rope or other fastener being broken accidentally in handling because 01 the temptation to lift them by said ropes as well as purposely by pil'l'erers to remove some or the contents thereof, so that the article is delivered in an unwrapped condition, either partially or ei'itirely, or short weight.
The object of my invention is the provision 01' fastener consisting of a band 01' metal that can be locked together on the package, and or further security sealed, it thought necessary, so as to prevent the possibility of the package being opened surreptitiously, and which, at the same time, constitutes a secure handle for carrying the package.
The construction and operation of my imprdved package holder will be described in detail herein-alter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan View of the holder open and ready to be secured in place; Fig. 2, a view in elevation of a package showing my improved holder secured thereon; Fig. 3, a plan view of the holder closed; and Fig. 4, a side view of the locked ends of the holder.
In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all of the views.
A indicates a package on which my holder is secured, and which consists of a band of metal 1, having a tongue 2, pivotally secured at one end. The tongue 2 is formed with two shoulders 3 and t, that are engaged by a Specification of Letters Patent.
1908. Serial No. 433,738.
Patented March 9, 1909'.
leaf-spring 5, secured on the inside of the band 1, and serve to hold the tongue in the open position shown in Fig. 2 when the spring 5 engages shoulder 3 or in the closed position shown in the other figures when the spring 5 engages shoulder 4. The free end of tongue 2 is formed with a projection or lug 6, which engages a hole 7 in spring-tongue 8, pivotally secured to the outer side of the band when the said band 1 is in a locked osition. 9 indicates a longitudinal slot in the other end of band 1 to receive tongue 2 in looking the band in position, the end of the band being bent laterally, as shown at 10, to fit over the journal of tongue 2.
11 indicates pointed prongs projecting from the inner surface of the band 1 that engage the napping of the package A when in position, and ei'lectually prevent the band from slipping out of place and in fact hold the band so securely in position that the band may be used for handling the package with hooks or other instruments, as well as with the hands, if desired.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a seal 12, secured around the band 1 and tongue 2, which may be used if there is danger of the contents being removed by unprincipled persons, but this construction is not essential to the com plete operation of my device and I do not, therefore, limit myself to the use of a seal except in so far as such use is necessary to support the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A shipping package holder comprising a band, prongs secured thereto and projecting from the inside of the band, a tongue pivotally secured to one end of the band and the other end formed with a slot to engage sai tongue, a shoulder on the pivoted end of the tongue, a leaf-spring engaging said shoulder, a lug on the free end of the tongue, and a leaf-spring swivelly secured to said band and having a hole therein to engage said lug, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUELE BONINI.
