To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. Hover, a citizen of the United States, residing at Three Rivers, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway Motor-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in railway motor cars.
My invention relates particularly to motor hand cars.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide an improved jr'notdrmar which is compact and light, and, at the same time, possesses suflicient strength for the userequired. Second, to provide an improved motor hand car in which the engine and its cooperating parts are so arranged and protected by the frame work and body of the car that they are not likely to be injured in use, although the car is subjected to the rough usage which ordinary hand cars are subjected to. Third, to provide an improved motor hand car in which the parts are so arranged as to be well balanced, thereby enabling the cars to be readily handled in lifting to and from the track.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out-in the claims.

The body is also preferably provided with side rails 5 arranged at the edges of the platform and resting on the cross sills, as clearly appears from Figs. 2 and 3. The traction wheels 6 are provided with suitable axles 7, the bear lugs for the side wheels beingn-iounted upon the side bars 8. The side bars 8 are preferably secured on the under sides of the cross pieces 8 arranged under the longitudinal sills. The gallows frame 9 is preferably mounted upon the central pair of longitudil nal sills and projects upwardly through the platform, to which it is also secured. Details of the connections for the parts, such bolts and the like, are not illustrated herein, as their arrangement will be obvious.
At its lower end, the gallows frame is preferably provided with a housing 10 which not only serves to protect the parts arranged therein, but also to brace the gallows frame.
Mounted on the gallowsframe, is a walking beamll, having hand-pieces 12 at each end. A driving connection is provided for the walking'beam to the rear axle, which preferably consists of a crank shaft 13 which is connected to the walking beam by means of the connecting rod 14-. On the crank shaft is a gear 15 which meshes with the pinion 16 on the rear axle. This pinion is connected to the axle by means of a clutch, a elutch collar 17 being the means illustrated. As the details of this clutch form no part of this 1n- The clutch collar 17 is shifted by means of the lever 18.
The engine 19, which is here illustrated a in conventional form, is arran ed between the central pair of longitudinal sills is suspended therefrom by means of the hangers 2G, a pa r of strap-like banger-"e benigprovided. The driving eonnectiens for the engine to the front axle preferably consists of a gear 21 on the front axle, and a pinion 22 on the shaft 23, which is connected to the engine shaft 24 by means of a clutch, as 25. By thus arranging the parts, the car may be driven either by means of the walking beam, or by means of the engine, or both. It
is, however, intended that the car shall be started by means of the walking beam, which starts the engine and then the driving connections for the walking beam to the mac-- tion wheels disconnected, or, when the car is heavily loaded, both driving means/may be employed. The engine is supported and 1e-- cated so that it does not throw the car out of balance, and permits its being as easily handled as though the engine was not present. The weight is not great, as the engine is of the small size, and the driving connections for the engine and walking beam are so arranged that they may be used independently or together. The engine is fully protected by the frame of the body of the car andggallows frame, and, at the same time, is readily accessible. An oil reservoir 27 is preferably suspended from the gallows frame by means of the strap 28, being connected to the engine or the carbureter thereof by means of a suitable pipe 29. The radiator 30 for the, engine is also preferably arranged within and carried by. the gallows frame. Connections therefor to the engine are not illustrated, as they form no part of this invention, The radiator is here illustrated in conventional form. By this arrangement of the parts, the delicate parts are all so arrangedas to be protected by the frame and body, and the hand car may be handled the same as an ordinary car without liability of disarranging the same.
I preferably provide my improved car with a brake consisting of a pair of brake shoes 31 pivoted on the side bars 8. These shoes are operated by means of the links 32, which are connected by the pivot 33 to the lower end of the foot lever 34 so that both shoes are operated by a single lever.
In the modified construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the engine is connected to the rear axle by means of the sprocket chain 35, the sprocket wheels 36 and 38, the shaft 39, the gear 10 and the pinion 41. The sprocket wheel 36 is arranged on the shaft 23, the sprocket wheel 38 and the pinion 41 on the shaft 39, and the gear 40 on the rear axle. I prefer, however, to connect the en gine to the front axle,'as I have described in connection with Figs. 1, 2 and 3, as I find that the car runs more steadily on the track when so driven; that is, there is less swaying movement of the car, and, further, I secure this advantage of four driving wheels where it is necessary or desirable to use both the engine and the walking beam as driving means. r
I have illustrated and described my invention in detail in the form preferred by me on account of the structural simplicity and economy thereof, although I am aware that it is capable of very great variation in structural details without departing from my invention, and I desire to-be understood as claiming the same specifically, as illustrated, as well as broadly.
' Having described my invention, what I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a body comprising a plurality of longitudinal sills and a platform; a ce trally arranged gallows frame secured to th central pair of sills and arranged through said platform; traction wheels; axles therefor; a walking beam; driving connections therefor to the rear axle, comprising a crank shaft carried by the said central pair of si1ls, a connecting rod for said crank shaft to said walking beam, a gear on said crankshaft, a pinion on the rear axle arranged to mesh with the gear on said crank shaft, and a clutch connection for said pinion to said axle; an engine carried by and arranged between the said central pair of sills and under the said gallows frame; driving connections for said engine to the forward axle, comprising a pinion, a clutch connection therefor to the engine shaft, and a gear on the forward axle arranged to mesh with said pinion; an oil storage tank arranged within and carried by said gailows frame; and a radiator arranged within and carried by said gallows frame.
2. In a structure of the class described, the combination with car body; gallows frame; traction wheels; axles therefor; a walking beam; driving connections therefor to the rear axle, comprising a crankshaft, 2 connecting rod for said crank shaft to said walking beam, a gear on said crank emit, a pinion on the rear axle arranged to mesh with the gear on said crank shaft, and a clutch connection for said 'fllillOIl to said axle; an engine arranged under the said gallows frame; and driving connect-ions prising a pinion, a clutch connection therefor to the engine shaft, and a gear on the for said engine to the forward axle, coin forward axle arranged to mesh with said pinion.

In a structure of the class described, combination with a body, comprising a plurality of longitudinal sills and a platform; a centrally arranged gallows frame, secured to the central pair of said sills, and arranged through said platform; traction ,wheels; a walking'beam; d'rivingconnections therefor to the traction wheels; means for disconnecting said driving connections; an engine carried by and arranged between the said central pair of sills and under said gallows frame; driving connections for said engine to the traction wheels, means for disconnecting said driving connections; an oil storage tank arranged Within and carried by said gallows frame; and a radiator arranged within and carried by said gallows frame.

In a structure of the class described, combination with a body, comprising a plurality of longitudinal sills and a platform; a centrally arranged gallows frame, secured to the central pair of said sills, and arranged through said platform; traction wheels; a walking beam; driving connections therefor to the traction wheels; means for disconnecting said driving connections; an engine carried by and arranged between the said central pair of sills and under said gallows frame; driving connections for said engine to the traction wheels, means for disconnecting said driving connections; and an oil storage tank arranged within and carried by said gallows frame.

In a structure of the class described, combination with a body, comprising a plurality of longitudinal sills and a platform; a centrally arranged gallows frame, secured to thecentral pair of said sills, and arranged through said platform; traction wheels; a walking beam; driving connections therefor to the traction wheels; means for disconnecting said driving connections; an engine carried by and arranged between the said central pair of sills and under said gallows frame; driving connections for said engine to the traction wheels, means for disconnecting said driving connections; and a radiator within and carried by said gallows frame.

In a structure of the class described, combination with a body, comprising a plurality of longitudinal SlllS and a platform; a centrally arranged gallows frame, secured to the central pair of said sills, and arranged through said platform; traction wheels; a walking beam; driving connections therefor to the traction wheels; means for disengine to'the traction wheels, and means for disconnecting said driving connections.

In a structure of the class described, combination witha car body, a gallows frame; traction wheels; a walking beam; an engine arranged under said gallows frame; driving connections for said engine and walking beam to the traction Wheels; means for connecting and disconnecting said driving connections; an oil storage tank arranged within and carried by said gallows frame; and a radiator arranged within and carried by said gallows frame.

In a structure of the class described, combination with a car body, a gallows frame; traction wheels; a walking beam; an engine arranged under said gallows frame; driving connections for said engine and walking beam to the traction wheels; means for connecting and disconnecting said driving connections; and an oil storage tank arranged within and carried by said gallows frame.

In a structure of the class described, combination with a car body, a gallows frame; traction wheels; a walking beam; an engine arranged under said gallows frame; driving connections for said engine and walking beam to the traction wheels; means for connecting and disconnecting said driving connections; and a radiator arranged within and carried by said gallows frame.

In a structure of the class described, the combination with a car body, of a gallows frame; traction wheels; a' walking beam; an engine arranged under said gallows frame; driving connections for said engine and walking beam to the traction wheels; and means for connecting and disconnecting said driving connections.

In a structure of the class described, the combination with a car body, of a gallows frame; traction wheels; a walking beam; an engine; driving connections for said engine and walking beam to the traction wheels; means for disconnecting. and connecting said driving connections; an oil storage tank arranged within and carried by said gallows frame; and a radiator arranged within and carried by said gallows frame.
