Be it known that we, JOHN A. WoLooT'r and THEODORE O. SCHWARTZ, citizens of the United States of America, residing at "Wyan dotte, in the county of VJayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Where one of a battery of boilers is temporarily outof service for repairs, it frequently companion boilers is inadvertently admitted thereto from the other boilers while workmen are still engaged thereon, often trapping them and causing serious, oft-times fatal accidents.
This invention relates to a valve adapted to be placed in the steam pipe or like cross connection between boilers, which is inaccessible for ordinary manipulation from Without the pipe and cannot be opened while there is any steam in the pipes, and at the same time, does not form an obstruction thereto when not in use or unnecessarily complicate the boiler fittings and piping.
The invention consists in the matters here- .inafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in cross-section of a valve embodying features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a View in longitudinal section of the valve. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation showing the valve casing in position. Fig. 4 is a view in detail of a valve closure.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a casing having end flanges 2 corresponding in internal and preferably also in externa diameter to the flanges 3 of a pipe line in which it is placed and secured in conventional manner. A hand-hole plate 4 is removably fastened, as by cap screws 5 or the like, over a lateral opening which is. the full Width of the casing interior and is slightly wider than the inner diameter of the flanges; each of the latter has an inner annular rib 6 which forms a valve seat. A closure consisting of a late 7 with annular rabbet or channel 8 fil ed with soft metal as copper or the like, adapted to mate with either of the ribs 6, has a diametrically disposed bridge 9 moving in longitudinally slotted guide studs 10 and in a central boss 11, pins 12 engaging slots in the bridge limiting its movement, and a spider 13 with notched eriphery for engagement of a spanner wrenc or'the like,

which has screw-threaded engagement with I the boss 11, whereby the bridge may be I forced against the casing when the closure is l at seat and thereby hold the latter firmly in place. When either is to be repaire the usual cut-off or controlling valve, as 15, is closed, and when l the boiler is blown oil, the casing hand-hole plate is removed, the closure placed therein, with its face toward the boiler under pressure, and the bridge holds the closure to seat, the spider being screwed home by proper l manipulation of a suitable bar or wrench. l The hand hole plate is then replaced. Thus I any accidental handling or tampering with i the. regular gate does no damage to persons at work on the dead boiler, as the steam cannot get through the auxiliary valve which is not open to manipulation. Nor can it be 0 ened without first removing the hand hole p ate, which therefore opens the pi e, and necessitates the proper shutting of t ie regular valve before any manipulation of the spider within the casing. By removing and replacing the closure in reverse position, the ac jacent boiler may be taken care of. WVhen not in use, the closure is taken out of the easing which thus forms no obstruction to the steam.
Obviously details of construction may be changed without departing from the spirit of the invention and we do not care to limit ourselves to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
When used to cut off any one of a battery of boilers, a casin is inserted in the pipe connecting each boiler with the main line be tween the boiler and the shut-off valve.
What we claim as our invention is:
1. A valve for the pur oses described comprising a casing and a c osure adapted to be detachably held to seat therein by means carried by the closure and completely housed by the casin when the closure is seated, the closure and holding means being bodily removable from the casing, and the casing being adc ted to form a substantially unobstructed coupling in a pipe line when the said members are withdrawn.
2. A valve for the pur oses described comprising a casing adapte to be permanently secured as a coupling between adjacent ends ed to seal the casing when placed therein and provided with means adapted to engage the casing, and hold the closure in place, said closure and holding means being removable as a unit from the casing, and being coirpletely housed thereby when the closure is seated.
3. A valve for the purposes prising a casing, a closure, and means on the closure adapted to engage the casing and to force the closure to seat, the closure and holding means being bodily removable as a unit from the casing and inclosed thereby when in place.
4. A valve for the purposes specified comprising a casing having circular end flanges each having an annular rib forming a valve seat on its inner face, a hand hole plate detachably secured on a lateral opening in the casing, a closure adapted to be seated against either one of the flange seats, a bridge movable on the closure adapted to bear against the opposite valve seat and a spider on the closure adapted to force the closure and bridge apart, the closure and bridge being bodily removable through the hand hole plate opening.
5. A. valve for the purposes described comprising a casing, a hand hole plate detachably secured over a lateral opening in the casing, a pair of circular coupling flanges described, 00111- 5 being completely l l l l l 1 l adapted to force the closure erases on the casing ends, an annular rib on the inner face of each flange forming a valve seat,
a closure plate having a face adapted to close 0 adapted to bear at its ends on the adjacent valve seat, a spider having screw-threaded engagement with the boss adapted to force the bridge outwardly, and a pair of studs on the plate having slots in their outer ends engaged by the bridge.
6. A valve for the purposes described, comprising a casing having a lateral aperture, a cover therefor, a closure adapted to be inserted through the aperture, and means to seat in the casing, said means being adapted to be manipulated only when the cover is removed, the closure and holding means being bodily removable as a unit from the casing through the aperture and being completely housed by the casing when in operative position with the cover in place.
