"BOX-COVER PRESS.
Application filed July 23,
.Toiall whomit may concern Beitknown that I, HERBERT VIAL, a citiclear, and. exact description of the invention,
such as Will enable others skilled in the art to whichitappertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a box cover press and more particularly to the class of presses :fOr posltwnlng'the covers or lids on boxes to .p
ermit thesaid covers or lids to be securely fastened. tothe latter.
The primaryobject of the invention is the provisionof'a box cover press intended for use'for boxing fruit such as apples or the like and consists in a table or support having a raising and lowering section upon which the box containing the fruit-is placed, clamping elements overhanging opposite extremities of said section to engage a lid or cover upon the box and foot actuated mechanism for raising said section to bring the lid or cover in osition upon the box being elevated by saic section so that said cover or lid may be securely nailed or otherwise fastened to the box and at the same time press the contents of the box tightly therein.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a box cover press having means for pressing down and holding the lid or cover in osition to permit nailing thereof to the said A further object of the invention is the provision of a box cover press which is simple in constructlon, efficient in operation and inexppnsive in the manufacture.
ith these and other objects in view, the invention for example, consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings which disclose the preferred form of embodiment of theinvention. However, it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications will be made if found desirable and such as come properly within the scope of the claims hereunto appended without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a front view of the invention. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 23, 1909.
1908. Serial No. 444,983.
I view. Fig. 1 is a front view with a box and its cover in position on the raising section and the latter being elevated, to bring the cover in proper position upon the box. Fig. 5 is a top plan view.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
In the drawings, the numeral 7 designates generally a table or stand which may be of any desirable material and shape however, it is preferably of rectangular shape and comprises spaced parallel side rails or bars 3 having secured by fasteners 9 to their inner faces outwardly diverging supporting legs 10, the upper extremities of which are united by transverse plates 11 secured thereto by fasteners 12 and which plates at their upper edge form rests or bearings 13 for a raising and lowering section or platform 14, the lat;- ter havinglsecured to its under face near opposite ends thereof spaced straps 15 formed at opposite ends with right an gularly disposed depending ears 16 having connected thereto by pivots 17 inwardly converging arms 18 the latter connected at their opposite ends by pivots 19 to rocking levers 20 which are fulcrumed by pivots 21 in bifurcations 22 centrally in intermediate legs 23 secured by fasteners 24 to the transverse plates 11 of the table.
A distance removed from the supporting legs 10 are alining supplemental legs 25 which latter are secured by fasteners 26 at their upper end to the inner faces of the rails or bars 8 and which supplemental legs have bifurcations 27 for a distance longitudinally thereof receiving vertically swinging bars or arms 28 the latter having their rear ends connected by pivots 29 to the rearmost supplemental leg 25 and the opposite front ends of said bars or arms 28 are cut to form rightangular outward extensions 30 upon which is mounted a foot beam or bar 31 secured thereto by fasteners 32. To the vertically swinging bars or arms 28 are connected by pivots 33, passing through spaced cars 34 short links 35 which latter have spaced ears 36 between which are mounted and pivoted thereto as at 37 the ends of the rocking levers 20.
Secured to the upper extremities of the intermediate legs 23 are fixed clamping elements 38 which latter have outwardly curved extensions 39 projecting a distance above the table and said extensions being bent on themselves as at 40 to form transverse engaging bars 41 overhanging the opposite ends of the raising and lowering platform or section 14 which latter supports and receives a fruit box 42 which latter is elevated thereby to bring its cover or lid 43 into engagement with the engaging bars 41 of the clamp elements 38 so as to compress the contents of the said box 42 and to bring the cover in position on the box whereby it can be securely nailed or otherwise fastened thereon.
On opposite sides of the raising and lowering section or platform 14 and secured to the rails or bars 8 are platforms 44 so that an at tendant may stand thereon for the purpose of filling the fruit boX 42 while upon the movable raising and lowering section prior to the application of the cover or lid to said box.
To raise the platform or section 14 the operator actuates the foot beam or bar 31 to cause the same to lower and through the medium of the short links the lovers 20 are rocked so as to force the arms 18 upwardly thereby raising the said platform or section. The opposite ends of this section 14 have central recesses 45 to accommodate the clamping elements 38 overhanging said platform. The rails or bars 8 are cut away as at 46 to permit the platform or section 14 to normally rest or be seated on the bearings 13 j of the transverse plates 11 of the table.
The supplemental legs 25 have connected I l l I g l l l l l l l l to their upper ends transverse securing plates 47 to unite the same and to reinforce the end platforms 44 of the table. it is apparent that the raising and lowering platform 14 will automatically reset itself due to its own weight by resuming a position of rest upon the bearings 13 of the transverse plates of the table.
W hat isclaimed is- A. box cover press comprising a table having spaced side rails, supporting legs secured to the side rails, a raising and lowering section, intermediate legs on said table between the supporting legs, rocking levers pivotally connected to said intermediate legs, connections between the said sections and the rocking levers, supplemental legs carried by said table, vertically swinging levers pivotally connected to two of said supplemental legs, a foot loeam secured to the free ends of said levers, link connections between the rocking levers and said vertically swinging levers and clamping elements secured to said table and overhanging the raising and lowering section.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signatur in presence of two Witnesses.
