To alwho'm 'it may concern:
moderately light construction and provided with an improved tread.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l represents a broken side elevational view of my improved wheel (partly in section) Fig.y 2, a broken plan view or treadview of the same F ig. 3, a broken section taken as indicated atline 3 of Fig. 1 and showing details of the hub construction; Fig. 4:, a broken section taken as indicated at line 4c of Fig. l; Fig. 5, a broken side eleva-- tional View (partly in section) of a modified form of the invention; and li`ig. 6, a view partly in plan. and partly in section,"taken as indicated atline 6 of Fig. 5. v
In the construction illustrated in Figs." l
`to et inclusive, A represents a sectionally con structed hub; B loop-shaped spokes having their inner ends connected with .said hub; and C, a sectionally constructed rim and tread. The hub- A comprises a sleeve or barrel a provided centrally upon its exterior with a rigid collar a1; hub-sections a2, a3 seated on said barrel c and recessed interiorly to accommodate the collar al, the adjacent faces ofesaid hub-sections a2, a3 being provided with recesses a* adapted to receive the inner ends of the spokes; and bolts a5 connecting said hubevsections. The adjacent faces ofthe hub-sections a2, a3 do not quite meet, the inner ends of the spokesbeing clampingly received in the recessesn Each spoke B preferably comprises a loop-form or triangular-shaped member formed by bending a bar of T-shaped cross-section into the form shown, thus affording substantially radial ymembers b and a connecting web, b1 at the outer ends thereof. In forming the spoke, the web b2 is disposed so as to lie within the loop of the spoke. The inner extremities of the members Z) are bent, as indicated at b, so as to be received by the obliquelydisposed recesses a4 of the hubfsections, so

that the inner ends,A of the sp e kes will be firmly anchored' to the hub-sections. The outer ends or base-portions of the loop-form spokes are secured to a metal rim c; and applied to the rim c are tread-blocks c1, which preferably are composed of wood in which the grain runs in a direction substantially radial with relation to the wheel.
c2 which have block-form heads c which are.
Y The. tread-blocks are secured to the rim by bolts beveled on their edges, as indicated at ci.
Alternate meeting edges of the treadblocks are beveled as indicated at c5 to receive the block-form ends of the bolts, as clearly appears from Fig. 2; and alternate meeting edges of said tread-blocks are provided with recesses c6 having beveled surfaces receiving said block-form heads of bolts, as also appears from Fig. 2. The blocks are prefer-- ably so disposed as to atlord at the alternate meeting edges thereof recesses or spaces cT which serve the function ofvroughening or breaking the tread-surfaces, so that the tread will take firm hold on the ground. Obviously, the bolts vmay be tightened to accom.-
modate for shrinkage or Wear of the treadblock. t
In the construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the same generalV idea is employed. ln this construction the sectional hub is designated A1; there are two series of spokes B1, B2; and the wheel-rim and tread is designated Cl. The hub A1 comprises a barrel af; intermediate hub-sections a7 flanking a centrally -located exterior collar with which said barrel is provided; outer hub-sections as; and connecting bolts as. The hub-sections aT, as are recessed to receive the inner ends of the two series of spokes, as will be understood from Fig. t3. preferably of loop-form or triangular form, comprising an angleLbar bent to form a substantially radial member lf* and the webf portion b5, the inner ends of the members b* being bent somewhat and received by the recesses of the hub-sections. Applied to the spokes is a broad rim c8 over the lateral margins of which are placed narrow circular bands 0; and tread-blocks c1 are applied to therim cs, said tread-blocks being recessed at their ends on their inner surfaces to'accominodate the bands cf. The treadblocks are provided with lateral recesses c which are located near their ends and which have beveled surfaces which receive the cor- Each spoke B1 is good hold upon the ground. The -ianges of headsof bolts responding 'beveled surfaces of blockshaped l i y012, by' fmeans of which the treadblocks arefsecured to` the rim 08 and bands c", Alternatel meeting edges of the tread-blocks areseparated slightly to afford spaces cl3 which enablethe'wheei to take thel spokes Blfare so disposed as to provide bearings@ at the ends of the tread-blocks, these bearings being rounded as indicated at d1 inthe curvature of the spoke. It will thus-be understood from Figs.` 5 and 6 that the -bearingsd are arranged .concentricallyl ingly'strong and durable being adapted to' very ,heagy work.- In bot-h constructions,
the strength in proportion Vto the lightness. is noteworthy; and, in each, provision is, made'for tighteningA the tread-blocks in case of shrinkage. Moreover, in each construction, provision is made for an effective en-- gagement of the tread with the earth.
VVhatI regard as new and'desireto Secure by Letters Patent, is:
