Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 16, 1909.
Application filed September 19, 3.908. Serial li o. 1553.855.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Monrninn NORDEH, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in illuminated Signs, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to an illuminatedsign and particularly to that class of signs which are electrically lighted and employed for display for advertising or other similar purposes.
I am aware that heretofore illuminated signs have been placed within an electrically lighted franie in such a manner as to throw the light against the sides of the devices such as letters for instance forming the sign, buti believe it is broadly new to provide an electrically lighted sign within an electrically lighted frame in such a manner that the light lrom the frame 'ill be cast upon all parts of the sign, more particularly upon the bottom of the sign as well as upon the sides thereof. thereby giving the sign the appearance of standing out in a flood of light, which latter is the purpose of my invention.
In carrying out my invention I preferably employ a frame provided with series of lights arranged both exteriorly and interiorly thereof, a back for the said frame, a sign or other device secured to and otl-scttroin the said back within the said frame so that the light from the interior, of the frame may be rel'lcctetl entirely around the said sign, and electrical circuits to and from the various series of lights for completing the electric circuits therethrongh.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a front elcva tion of my improved illuminated sign. Fig. 2 is across section on line :22, m, Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic viewillustrating the electrical connections employed in the sign.
Referring particularly to the drawing, 10 designates a frame which is preferably hollow and may be made of sheet metal or suitable composition, or any other desired material. The frontinner portion of this frame is beveled as indicated at -l1 and the inner edge portion 12 is preferably made parallel with the front or outer sides of the frame. Exteriorly the frame is -arranged with a series of lamps indicated at 13, the sockets thereof being suitably secured in the corners at? the frame and intermediate of the corner lamps I prefer to employ a series of lamps indicated at H, secrets for which are also suitably secured in the exterior portion of the said frame. Within the hollow frame 10 and in suitably spaced positions, I employ a l series of brackets intlieatcd'at l5 and to each ln'at-kct 15, on the opposite sides thereof, are secured lamp sockets 16 17 which. respectively are atla'uicd to receive lamp bulbs l8 19. The lamps 18 may he made of one color and form one series and the lamps 19 may be of another color and form another series.
20 indicates a back or support rovided with a ilange 21 adapted to fit within the opening in the rear of the frame 10 to fill and eiosii: the same, and the back :20 may be secured in position by suitable catches 22 or otherwise. Secured to the back or support; 20 I en'iploy a sign device indicated. at 23. As illustrated in the drawing this sign device represents the letter H and is preferably made of sheet me'al, but as will be understood this sign device mayrepresent any desired character or characters, or design and may be tirade of any other suitable material.
"ti'ithin the slut device 23 I prefer to employ sockets 2t :1 lapted to receive an elec it'l lamp hull. so that; the sign device may he separately and independently lighted. The sign device 23 is secured to the lntt'h or um-dirt it) by means of bolts 26 and the pacing collars f3? intervening between the said hack or support 20 and tie rear or under surface ol. the sign device 23, so that instead of resting llush against the back or support the sign device is offset therefron in order that the light 1': om the lamps Within the frame mi y be reflected not only against the sides of the device but entirely beneath the same to produce the ellect of the sign dev ce floating in a flood of light. The frame it) is provided in a suitable position with circuit switches 29 30 and 31.
As llercinhelore indicated, the lights of the series t'n'ranged exteriorly of the :trame and both of the sides arrarmed interiorly of the frame and the ligl'its arranged in the sign device are preferably arranged to be turned on and ed independently of one another, and as shown in Fig, 3 the lead Wires 32 are connected across the terminals of each of said switches 28 29 30 and 31; the
carrying the current to the other series of liliielifll'fii' 'erran eci 1331118 the Wires a h 7 the lamps in the Sign. device 23, and the wires carrying the current to fine lamps errangeci exterioriy of the frame, anci as will be apparent, any ene 01 more 023 these series of lamps may be turned on simuitaneousiy snci an combination. of the seine may be empiriyeci. v
I claim as my iiiveiitionr l, n. illuminated sign comprisinge heiiow frame, series of electric lights arranged bcflresterieriy and interioriy thereof, a.- sign Within the said frame, a. sup sort and. means ficm the switch SO caMying the current to for securing the said sign t0 the said sup g 20i.i, in'eii off-set position therefrom.
An iiiuminated sign comprising a 1101- low frame, a series of iights arranged e tei-iciiy of the frame, independein; series of iighis aiianged interioriy' 0f the frame, a
Sign device Within the said frame, lights in. said sign device, a back for the said frame, means for securing the said sign device to the said back in an (iii-set position there frem and independent electric circuits to each cf the said series of lights.
Signed by me this 19th day of August MORTEMER NGRDEN. i Vitnesses ARTHUR H. SERRELL, Zsomemsmz.
