Be it known that I, FRANK J. 'IANNER, of Groton, in the county of Tompkins, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful improvements in Tabulating Devices for Type-Writing Machines, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanyin drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in typewriting machines, having more articular reference to a tabulating attac ment ,herefor.
The primary object of my invention is to produce a simple, com act and easily operated device for tabulatmg columns of figures or numbers of varying denominations, be'ing applicable also for printing columns of words, or other printed matter at predetermined positions in the travel of the carriage.
Another object in tabulating numbers of varying denominations is to enable the operator to accurately print any number of columns of numbers, and to arrange a decimal point or other dividing character in exact vertical alinement in each column, whereby the liability of error in copying a list oi numbers is reduced to a minimum.
A further object of this invention is to enable the operator to release the carriage and to stop the same at any predetermined distance in its travel by a single operating mechanism, and to also retard the speed of movement of the carriage in its travel toward the stopping position.
still further object is to provide a reversible stop whereby the mere reversal in position of the stop varies the travel of the carriage one space upon its release.
To this end the invention consists in the combination, construction and arrangement of the parts of a tabulating device for typewriting machines as hereimifter fully dcscribcd and pointcd out in the claims.

n the drawings, Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 8, I have shown portions of a typewriting machine consisting of a carriage bar a an operating drum l)- for actuating the carriage in one direction and an escapement wheel cfor controlling the movement of the carriage. The connections and operations of these parts being well understood, it is not thought necessary to further illustrate the same, it being understood that the drum --bis actuated by a suitable spring motor and is connected to the carriage for transmitting motion thereto and that the escapemcni wheel is employed in connection with suitable escapement dogs or pawls and connected to the carriage for permitting the carriage to move step-by-stc in the usual manner for letter spacing. t is also well understood that suitable provision is made for releasing the carriage from the escnpenicnt mechanism whereby the carriage may be moved cndwisc in either direction independently of the cscapement wheel, or may l e returned to its starting position against the action of the motor actuated drum without ell'ecting the movement of said escapemcnt wheel. in order to carry out this operation, i usually 'il'ovidc the cnrria e with a suitable rocki a d-- operating in connection with the pinion e which is mounted upon a spindle fof the eseapement wheel, the pinion eand OSCELpEIHPHl wheel r being each provided with clutch teeth 5 held in engagement with each other by a suitable spring l1, whereby an actuation of the feed or escupement dogs (not shown) will all'ord an intermittent rotai ion of the escapement wheel and pinion connected thereto by the clutch 5/, and the teed rack and carringe will be moved in the direction of their feed movement by power implied thereto through the drum l1: the clutch teeth 1 l cing so arranged as to permit the return movement of the carriage without cli'erting the re voise rolntion oi the escapemcnt wheel c.
'lhe iahulziting device which forms the basis of my present invention pr f y consists of a stop shoulder 1 a rocking to the operating mernher for controlling the speed of movement of the carriage.
The stop shoulder 1 is preferably mounted upon the caizu'age --aindependently of the frame which supports the piaten and is usually arranged in fixed relation to the earriage, although it is evident that this shouldcr may have a slight adjustment, if desired.
The rocking frame *2 is secured to a suitable rock-shaft 6- which forms a portion of the rocking frame and is provided with opposite upwardly projecting arms 7 and an intermediate depending arm 8 having an extension -9 pro'ecting above the axis of the rock-shaft and formed with a lateral extension -10-. Secured to the upper ends of the arms 7-- is a stop bar 1 1* upon which is adj ustahly mounted the stops 3, this stop bar 11 also forniin a portion of the rock frame, its opposite en s being secured to the arms 7 and the front and rear faces of its intermediate portion being each provided with a series of serrations forming cutouts 12- and projections or shoulders -13--, the cutouts and pro'ections of each series alternating with eac other and are arranged in transverse alinement, that is, the shoulders and spaces or cutouts in one face are in transverse alinement with similar shoulders and recessesin the opposite face, the spaces being arranged to recelve the sto )S and the shoulders 13-- serving to mid said stops from lateral dis )laeement.
he rock-shaft is journaled at its oposite ends in suitable brackets 14*- orming a portion of the typewriter frame and is adapted to he moved endwise in the hearings of said brackets for a purpose hereinafter described.
The upright arms 7 serve as supports for the stop oar '1] and are so mounted on the roek-shaft relative to the brackets l4- as to )ermit the desired endwise movement of the rock frame.
The depending arm -8- is, as previously stated, secured to the intermediate portion of the rock-shaft and is rovided at its lower end with asuitahle eye or equivalent tearing to which is connected the operating member The extension -9 and lateral offset 10 are here shown as extending upwardly and laterally from the arm -8*-,
although it is evident that this extension --9 and offset -10 may he otherwise 5 secured to the frame -2- and serve to operi ate a suitahle releasing lever -15 for re leasing the carriage whe desired. The offiaving an independent GIIL',
set 1U- is of sufficient length to he at all times in alincment with the engaging face or shoulder of :the releasing mcmher l5 during the endwisc movement of the 'rocking-frame, and it is therefore evident that no matter what )osition the rocking frame may assume the offset --1()- will at all times l e in position to operate the releasing mcmhcr -l5.
The spaces -12-- and shoulders 13 in each of opposite fares of the lar --]1- are formed ofsulstantially the same width, and the width of each of the shoulders and spaces is substantially equal to the step-hystep movement of the carriage as regulated by the teeth of the eseapement wheel '--c, and inasmuch as the typewriter is usually provided with a graduated letter spacing scale having its graduations corresponding to the step-by-step movement of the escapement wheel e it is apparent that the distance hetween each of the letter spacing graduations of said scale is equal to the width of one of the spaces or shoulders of the stop har ll Stated, from another oint of view an ins iertion of Fi 8 will show that for each distance of ten letter s aces on the stop lar, say, l etween the int lees 40 and 50, there are but five teeth instead of ten as is ordinarily the case; and
that consequently the stops 3 and the teeth 13 of the stop liar may he and are made larger and stronger than formerly. The spacing from the center of one tooth on the stop har 11 to the center of an adjacent tooth is doul'le the letter space movement of the earriage, so that teeth 13 double the size of those ordinarily employed may he used and less cutting of the rack 11 is required and a stronger engaging means l'ctween the stops and rack may he provided; yet by reversing the stop it may he set for arresting the carriage at any letter space position.
The releasing memlrr previously mentioned, is pivotally mounted at 15* on a portion of the frame of the typewriter and is provided with an. engaging shoulder -l6 and :1 depending rcaruatrdly extending arm --l7 the shoulder 7 -16- heing arranged in a groove in the huh of the pinion a and the arm i7-- l. eing adapted to he engaged by the offset "-10" or upper end of the arm -9 so that as the frame --2- is rocked the offset 10 will engage the arm -17--- pinion e endwise out of engagement with the clutch face of the escapement Wheel ak and therel-y release the carriage.
The stops 3 are mounted upon and adjustable lengthwise of the stop har l l-- and each preferahly'consisls of a head ---18--- and a bifurcated depending extension --]f)---, the head ll??? being of substantially the same width laterally as the combined width of one of the shoulders and spaces ofthe stop bar 'l1, and the depending arms of the bifurcated extension are formed of substantially the same width as i the spaces for permitting the insertion and removal of said arms into the opposite spaces, one of the lateral flat contact or arresting faces of the head---18-- and extension 19- of the sto being arranged in 10 alinement with each 0t er, and it is therefore evident that the opposite fiat contact or arresting face of the head extends beyond or is 0ff-set laterally relatively to the corresponding face of the bifurcated extension ,or en- 15 gaging portion a distance equal to the width of one of the shoulders or spaces of the stop bar so that when the stop is inserted into the spaces the head will overlap the adjacent s oulders. By constructing the stop as just described, it is apparent that when the stop is removed from one space and reversed and then reinsertedin the same space the position. of the face of the stop adapted to engage the stop shoulder I- will be varied the distance of one letter space and will stop the carriage at different positions in its travel thereby varying the travel of the carriage one space and enabling. the operator to sto the carriage at odd or even numbers or letter spaces with the use of a minimum number of shoulders and spaces 13 and 12. Su )posc for example the operator is printing a co ulnn of numbers with four figures each and the stop is set at 30, as seen at the'right of Fig. 8,
and it is desired to continue the column with numbers having only three figures each and still have the right hand figures in vertical alinernent, this step would then be reversed by the operator in the same space 12 which would bring its stop face at 3 1- and the carriage would, therefore, stop automatically at this point or one point to the left of where it previously stopped for numbers of four figures. In order to hold the stop from vertical displacement I usually provide the same with a spring catch l9 aving its upper end secured to the head -l8- and its lower end provided with a shoulder adapted to engage the lower face of the stop bar, this catch being so arranged as to permit the stop to be readily inserted or Withdrawn from the spaces of the stop bar for the purpose of permitting the stop to be reinserted into any other space u 30]] the stop bar. The up ,er portion of the head -'l8 of each of the stops is provided with oppositely substantially parallel inclined faces -20- one of which is always in the rear of the active contact face of a stop irrespective of which contact face is presented for cooperation with the stop 1. The rear face of the f'lDUI) 1 is likewise beveled to correspond to the hovels or inclined-fact-s o): the stops 3, when the position of the carriage is such as to bring the shoulder in alinement with a stop -3, a forward movement of the stop 3 will not result in blocking the operation of or injurin the tabulator mechanism as the stop 3 will be brought into the path of the sto 1 and the carriage will be released. lhe Jeveling of the cooperating tabulating stops on the rear face is a common expedient and its urpose is well understood, but it will be on erstood that by my arrangement a beveled rear face of a stop --3- is presented for cooperation with the cooperating inclined face of the stop l.no matter which of the two contact or arresting faces of a stop --3- is presented for operation. so The operating member 4 is pivotally connected at its intermediate portion to a suitable bracket -21- forming a portion of the typewriter frame and also has an endwise movement, the bracket -21 bein pro- 35 vided with an elongated slot -22 or receiving a pivotal pin 23-- secured to the operating member 4. This operating member usually consists of a horizontal rocking lever adapted to be moved endwise indcpendently of its rocking movement, its rear end being connected to the lower end of the arm 8*- of the frame -2 by a hinge member 24, said hinge member being pivotally connected at -25 to the arm 8- and the adjacent end of the lever 4-- is similarly connected by a pivotal pin 2 5 to the member --24-. The opposite end of the lever 4-- extends toward the front of the machine, is guided in a suitable tabulating index frame 26-having a guide-way 27 and a series of notches or cutouts 28-, said front end of the o crating member being also prpvided with a andpiece 29-, and a shoulder -30 adapted to enter the notches -28- as the lever .4 is moved rearwardly endwise. The tabulating index frame 26- is provided with a series of graduations 31---- corresponding to numbers of varying denomina- Home from zero to one million, as illustrated in Fig. 1, although it is evident that any number of numbers of different denominations may he used, these graduations being so 8 aced as to correspond with the spaces or s ulders of the stop bar 1 i that is, the distance from one graduation to the next graduation isproportioned to the width of one of the spaces or one of the shoulders of the stop bar, so that in moving the lover from one graduation to the next, the stop bar -11 will be moved the distance of ol'ic space. These graduatiol'is are numbered consecutively from right to left. as 0, l, 10, 100, 1000, ctr-1., and the operating lever is normally held at the starting point, as in this instance, zero, by a suitable spring or equivalent devicc 32- and is also held in its normal cndwisc position with the shoulder 30-- out of engagement with thl'areccsses 28 by a spring or equivalent device The stops 3 which are mounted upon the stop bar 11 are normally out of the path of the shoulder 1 on the carriage for permitting the free movement of said carriage, as in the operation of the s acing bar or the keys of the typewriter and t e carriage may even be released fr om connection with the cscapement mechanism by an independent releasing mechanism, not illustrated, for
rmitting the operator to move the carriage said escapement mechanism without engaging the stops. When the operating member or lever 1 is moved rearwardly against the action of the spring -33 the stops are rocked into the path of the shoulder -1- and the carriag is simultaneously released by the lateral 0 set 10 of the extension --9-, and it is therefore evident that the carriage will move automatically into engagement with the first stop in the path of the shoulder -1-- and that as soon as the operator releases the pressure upon the handpiece 29- the spring 33 automatically rocks the frame -2 for moving the stu s -3- in the reversedirection out of the pat of the shoulder 1", thereby enablin the operator to print in the usual manner from this predetermined stopping point in the travel of the carriage as many numerals or other characters as may be desired.
The stop bar 1lis provided with a series of graduations corresponding to thegraduations of the letter spacing scale of the typewriter, said graduations being numbored, however, in reverse order from those of the letter spacing scale. This reverse arrangement bein necessitated b Y the move ment of the carriage and platen om right to left in rinting.
It will be noted that in the drawings, I have shown in Figs. 1 and 8, a letter spacing scale A graduated from 0 to inclusive and numbered consecutively from left to right, this graduating scale being mounted on the platen-frame and movable with reference to a fixed frame -B having an indicator 34. The graduations upon the stop bar ,-1 1 indicate the successive spaces and shoulders upon said step bar and correspond with the graduations upon the letter spacing scale -A- these graduations u on the stop bar being numbered consecutive y from 0 to 70 inclusive from right to left in the reverse order from those on the letter spacing scale of the typewriter. The indicator -34 is generally arranged a certain number of spaces at one side, and in this instance, six s aces to the right of the printing point for the purpose of revealing the numerals of the letter spacing scale and indicating the exact position of the carriage with reference to the printing point- The opening in the frame B liackwardly and forwardly independently of,

The brake 5* for tiie purpose of retarding the speed of movement of the carriage when the same is released is referably actuated by the operating mem er -4- and consists of a reciprocally movable .lunger mounted on the bracket-21 and raving a friction face adapted to engage the drum b-. A sliding plate 36 is mounted upon the intermediate portion of the lever 4 preferably in front of the pivot 23 and is held in its normal position with the friction face of the brake away from the drum bby the sprin. .33. The plate 36 is formed with an upwar y extendmg portion 36 that co-acts with the stern of the brake and has slots 38 and 38 (Fig. 9) for permitting its endwise or sliding movement independently of the endwise movement of the o crating member 4, and is held from lateral is lacement by suitable studs or screw threaded posts 39 and 39 which pass through theqs'lots 38 and 38' respeetivel and are secured at their lower threaded end: in threaded openings in the o erating member 4. A spring 37 is secure at one end to the 0st 39, its other end bein fastened to the rent upturned end of the p ate 36, as indicated at 36, and it is apparent from the above descriptionthat when the operating 100 member 4 is moved rearward] the brake member is also simultaneously forced into engagement with the drum b and the continued movement of the operating brake has engaged the drum serves ,to tension the spring 37-, thereby affording a yielding brake.
The operation of my invention is as follows: First-e-the stops -3 are adjusted or set to the desired graduation to establish redetermined points at which the carn'a e 18 to be stop ed in its travel to determine the different co urnns Second-the operating lever is then rocked to the graduation upon the tahulating index plate indicatin the denomination of the number to be printed. ,Third the lever is then moved endwise for rocking the step into the ath of the shoulder on the carriage and at t e same time operates the member ].5- to release the carri age. Fourth-the carria e then moves automaticall until its shou der engages the firststop in its path. Fifththe operating member is then released and returns to its normal position, thereby returning the stop bar and escapement mechanism to their normal positions. Sixth-the return of the operating lever endwise and laterally to its normal position moves the stop bar and its step one or more oints to the left of the previously established stop ing point of the carriage correspondin to the number of figures selected on the in ex plate, whereupon the typewriter may be operated in the usual manner to print the previously chosen numher, as indicated by the raduation above referred to, the decimal point or other dividing character being printed at the predetermined stopping mt along the carriage and any remaining gures, as decimals, may be added, if required.
As stated in the preamble, it is sometimes desired to print one or more columns of words or other matter at predetermined distances in the travel of the carriage. In this instance it is simply necessaryto arrange the stops upon the sto bar atpredetermined sto pin points in t e travel of the carriage am to t ion mo re the operating member endwise for releasing the carriage, it being unde rstood that as soon as the carriage is released the shoulder thereon will immediately engage the first stop in its path of movement. The lever is then permitted to return endwise to its normal position whereupon the columns of words or other matter may be printed in a vertical column in the usual manner, the initial letter of each word being in direct vertical alinement.
This device is also ada ted for printing columns of decimal num ers. For examplesuppose it is desired to print a series of columns of numbers with the decimal points in each columnin exact vertical alinement and to arrange the decimal points of thevarious columns at 10, 30, 50 and points respectively from the left of the sheet to be .printed-the sto s are adjusted, with their engaging faces a ined respectively with the raduations 10, 30, 50 and 70 of the stop bar.
ow suppose it is desired to print 1000the lever 4' will then be rocked by the op erator four points from its normal position, or in other words, to the graduation corresponding with 1000. This operation moves t 0 stop bar and the stops carried thereon four points to the right of its normal position;in this position the shoulder 30 of the lever is registered with the recess 28 corresponding also with the 1000 graduation; the lever is then moved cndwise, the shoulder '30 entering the recess and holding the lever from further rocking movement, and the stop to be first engaged by the shoulder on the carriage is rocked into the path of movement of the shoulder, said shoulder engaging the stop and arresting the movement of the carriage. During this op eration, the carriage is released simultaneouslv with the movement of the stop into the path of the shoulder on said carriage. The operator then permits the return of the lever -'l' and the mechanisms operated thereby to their normal positions by the springs 32,
33 and 37, the spring -33- effecting the endwise return movement and the spring 32- causing the member 4 to rock to its normal osi-tion while the lever 4: returns the p ate -36- to its normal position and releases the brake. When the lever 4- is rocked to its normal sition, the stop bar --11- is moved to the eft the same number of points, as four, 'whereu on the printing of 1000 may be'eil'ected in t usual manner. In like manner, any other number may be printed, and by operating a line spacer any number of numerals of varyin denominations may be arranged in a vertic column or columns with their decimal points and figures of like denominations arranged in vertical alinement.
The operation of my device willnow be readily understood upon reference to the foregoing description and the accompanying drawing and it will be noted that from certain aspects of my invention my tabulator may be used with any suitable escapement for the carriage and that the brake may be otherwise operated, or entirely disposed with, if desired.
Having thus described 'my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a, carriage; a toothed stop bar, the distance from the center of one tooth of said bar to the center of an adjacent tooth being double a letter space movement of the car riage; and a stop engaging the teeth of said stop bar, the construction and arrangement being such that the stop when set in different positions at the same point on the stop bar varies the travel of the carriage.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage; a toothed stop her, the distance from the center of one tooth of said bar to the center of an adjacent tooth being double a letter space movement of the carriage; and a stop having different contact faces an one of which may be presented for use, sai stop engaging the teeth of the stop -tion of a carriage, a toothed stop bar, the
distance from the center of one tooth of said bar to the center of an adjacent tooth being double a letter space movement of the carriagze; and a reversible stop engaging the teeth of said stop bar. the construction and arrangement being such that a reversal of the stop varies the ravel of the carriage.
4. In a typcwriting machine, the combination of a carriage; a toothed stop bar. the
distance from the center of one tooth of said bar to the center of an adjacent tooth being double a. letter space movement of the carriage; and a reversible stop engaging the teeth of said stop bar, the construction and arrangement being such that a reversal of the stop varies the travel of the carriage one letter space.
5. In vpewriting machine, the combination of a daiifege; a toothed stop bar, the distance from the center of one tooth of said bar to the center of an adjacent tooth being double a letter space movement of the carriage; and a reversible stop having means for engaging said stop bar and contact faces at varying distances from said engaging means, whereby the positions of the contact faces mav be changed relatively to the stop bar without varying the osition of engagement of the step along Stilt? bar.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage; a toothed. stop bar, the distance from the center of one tooth of said bar to the center of an. adjacent tooth being double a letter space movement of the carria c; a reversible stop engaging the teeth of sai stop bar, the construction and arrangement being such that a reversal of the sto varies the travel of the carriage; and yield ing means detarhably locking the stop to said step barv in a typewritiog nmrhinc, the combina tion of a carriage, a tahulator stop on the carriage, a cooperating tabulator stop on the framing of the machine, and a manually operated lever that has a swinging movement and an endwise movement, with intermediate connections between said lever and said last mentioned sto i, to change the position of the stop paral cl with and at right angles to the endwise movement of the can rings.

The combination with the carriage of a. ty )ewriting machine, of a bar having a plurality of stops, and a controlling lever that has :1 sninging movement and an i'ndwise movement, with intermediate connections between said lever and bar for moving the bar endwise and laterally relative to the earringe.

In a typevvriting machine, a carriage, a tahulating device comprising a rock bar independent of the carriage and having an independent endwise movement, a reversible stop mounted on the bar, and a. single operating member acting directly on the bar to rock the bar and to elleei the endvvise movement thereof.
15. The combination with the carriage and release mechanism of a typewriting machine, of a movable stop-bar for the carriage, and a lever movable endv'ise to actuate the release mechanism and stop her by a single movement.

In a typew'rrting machine, the combination with a carriage and escapement mechanism, of a stop movable into and out of engagement with the carriage and having an it de endent endwise movement, an operating ever movable horizontally endwise and laterally and connected to actuate the stop, means operated by the cndwise movement of the lever to disengage the carriage feed from the escapement, and a brake controlled by the lever for checking the speed of movement of the carriage.
21. In a typewriting machine, a carriage and release mechanism, a tabulating device comprising a rockbar having an endwise movement parallel with the movement of the carriage, a stop adjustably mounted on the bar and removable from points interme diate the end of the bar, a lever which likewise has an endwise movement and is con nected to the bar for effecting its rocking and endwise movement, means actuated by the bar to release the carriage, and a brake actuated by the endwise movement of the lever to check the speed of movement of the carriage.

In a typewriting machine, a carriage and release mcchanism, a tabulating device c mprising a rock-bar having an endwise movement parallel with the movement of the carriage, a reversible sto) mounted on the bar and adjustable lcngt wise thereof, a lever for operating the bar, means operated by the bar to release the carriage, and a brake actuated by the lever for engaging the feeding drum of the carriage.

In combination with the carriage and releasing mechanism of a typewriting machine, a tabulating index, a rock bar having an independent endwise movement, one or more stops ad'ustably mounted on the bar for stopping t e carriage at predetermined distances in itstrave'l, and a single operating member connected to the bar and movable along the index for varying the position of the stops, said member having an independent endwise movement for releasing the carriage and rocking the bar.

In a typewriting machine and tabulating mechanism, the combination of a carriage, iced dogs therefor, a feed rack, intermediate mechanism between said feed dogs and rack, said intermediate .mechanism including a. clutch, tahulating devices, a single key for positioning the tahulating devices to arrest the carriage at difi'erc-nt denomination al positions, and means for automatic-all releasing the clutch to free the carriage when the tabulating devices are actuated.
