Description
c. H. GOODYEAR. NOTE BOOK.
APPLICATION IILBD JULY 16,1908.
1 912,1 12. Patented Feb. 9, 190s I wa UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. GOODYEAR OF CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA.
NOTE-B OOK.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. Goon- YEAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Note-Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to note-books for the use of stenographers, students, and others, and has for its object to produce a simple and inexpensive note-book, adapted to hold the note-paper in a convenient form for use, and providing for the quick and easy detachment of the written sheets and the insertion of blank sheets to take their places.
The invention is fully disclosed in the description and claims following, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of the book opened out flat, as in use. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the binder, with all the sheets removed. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view, showing the middle and upper portion of one of the sheets. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view, showing the upper part of the binder at the back. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 show details of the hooks to hold the sheet retaining cords. Fig. 8 illustrates the manner of attaching a four strand cord to the hooks.
In practice the sheets that form the con tents of the note-book are perforated and notched as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. It will be seen that the sheet A is notched at B both top and bottom, and is perforated at C along the middle of the sheet. The holes at D are for filing on the studs of a transfer binder, not shown. A number of these sheets, usually about siX, forms a section, folded along the line of perforations.
The binder is composed of a pair of stiff covers E, preferably hinged to a stiff backstrip F. Attached to the back at the top and bottom is a hook G, which as shown herein is threefold and formed with an eyelet H, which for neatness is clenched through a washer I at the back, as shown in Fig. 4. About the prongs of this hook is looped the section retaining cord J, preferably elastic, and connected by a suitable end fastener at Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 16, 1908.
Patented Feb. 9, 1909.
Serial No. 443,835.
K. The course of the cord is shown in Fig. 8, where it will be evident that the two bot tom loops pass around the two outer prongs of the hook, the outer loop at the top passes over all three prongs, and the inner top loop over the middle prong. The construction is such as to admit of the cord being very quickly attached to the binder back in the process of manufacture, and when in position the various strands are parallel and do not cross at any point. The various sections are slipped under these separate strands, the notches at the top and bottom serving to keep them very accurately in position.
For convenience in clenching the eyelets of the hooks, the latter are originally formed flat, and being of lighter brass are easily bent to hook form by the fingers. The number of prongs may vary according to the number of sections used, a single hook at each end serving for a pair of sections, while a five-pronged hook would take six strands and sections, and so on.
The user of the note-book is supposed to fill both opposite pages of the sheet, or more, and then detach the sheet by tearing it along the cord through the central line of perforations.
Having thus described my invention, I claim.
1. A note-book binder, comprising a pair of covers and a back, a multiple pronged hook attached by an eyelet to the inside of the back near the top and bottom, and a continuous cord looped about said hooks, and lying in parallel and uncrossing strands.
2. A note-book, substantially as described, comprising one or more sections of folded and centrally perforate leaves having cordengaging notches at the top and bottom, and a retaining binder, comprising a pair of covers and a back, a hook attached to the inside of the back near the top and bottom, and an elastic cord looped about said hooks.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES H. GOODYEAR.
