Be it known that I, SETH A. CEoNE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Railway Brake-Beams, of W ich .the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in railway brake-beams, and consists in the novel features hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out inthe claims.
My inventlon pertains to truss-beams and resides more particularly in a novel strut and means for securing the same to the compression member, as hereinafter explained.
The invention will be fully understood from the detailed descri tion hereinafter presented, reference being fiad to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top view of the middle portion of a railway brake-beam constructed in accordance with and embodying the invention, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the strut, with the truss rod shown in central transverse section and the compression member in transverse section on the dotted line 22 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 10 designates the com pression member, 11 the truss-rod and 12 the strut, the truss-rod being of customary character and secured at its ends to the ends of the compression member, as usual in truss-beams. The compression member .10
is formed of a rolled flanged section and is preferably of T-shape in cross section, as shown. 1 e
The strut 12 is of cast metal and at one end engages the middle portion or bend of the truss-rod in a customarymanner, while at its other end said strut engages'the compression member and is secured thereto by means of upper and lower specially constructed corresponding clam s 14, 14 and a vertical rivet or bolt 15. T e outer end of the strut 12 is slotted or recessed, as at16, to receive the web 17 of the compression mem ber 10, and the extreme end surface of the strut is oppositely tapered, as denoted by dotted lines 18 in Fig. 1, so as to ride against and firmly en age the flan e portions of said member 10. he base of t e recess 16 in the strut is also curved, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, so as to facilitate any necessary angular movement of the strut to the straight osition shown in Fig. 1 in applying it to position between the compression member and truss-rod. The outer end of the strut 12 is formed on its upper and lower sides with shoulders 19 and at the ends of said shoulders with integral outwardly projecting lugs 20 which are of angular formation and therefore project from the upper and lower sides of the strut and also in a direction from the shoulders 19;
The upper and lower clam s 14 may be either of forged metal or ma eable castings and they have inwardly directed ends 21 to engage the edgesof the flange of the cornpression member 10 and the shoulders 19 of the strut. The clamps 14 at the corners of their inner ends are recessed, as at 22, to fit partly around and between the lugs 20, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby thecorrect applica tion of the clamps is facilitated and the rivet or bolt holes therein become centered with the like holes through the strut and web of the compression member. I do not limit my invention to the recesses 22 and lugs 20 but these featuresare of importance and perform a special duty. In applying the strut 12 to the other parts of the eam, the usual end nuts securing the ends of the truss-rod may be loosened and the strut introduced between the truss-rod and compression member, after which the upper and lower clamps 14 are applied to position and secured by means of the bolt or rivet 15 which extends through both clamps, the end of the strut and the web of the compression member. In instances where it may not be desired or possible to loosen the ends of the truss-rod pre aratory to applying the strut to position, Fwill first place the strut between the compression member and trussrod in an angular osition with one end of the strut on the midd e bend of said rod and the other end of the strut against the compression member, with the web 17 of the latter in the recess 16, and then force the outer end of the strut along the compression member until the strut attains its straight position, whereupon I will apply the clamps-14 and rivet 15 in the manner hereinbefore explained.
The clamps 14 afford, with the bolt or rivet 15, very desirable and efiicient means for securing the strut and compression member together, said rivet closely binding the clamps against the upper and lower adjacent and either may be applied to either the upper 5 or lower side of the strut and compression member.

The clamps 1e are independent of each other and any injury to one clamp will not affect the other clamp and hence the cost of repairs with respect to the clamps is reduced to the minimum. When the clamps possess the recesses 22 and. the strut the lugs 20 it is substantially impossible to apply the clamps except directly and immediately in a correct position with the holes for the rivet 15 in proper line to receive said rivet, said recesses and lugs serving to guide the clamps at once to their proper final positions.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A brake-beam comprising a compression member, a truss-rod and a strut, said compression member being a rolled section and the end of said strut engaging said member and being seated on a horizontal portion of the same and having shoulders on its upper and lower sides, combined with independent clamps applied sides of the adjacent portions of said strut and compression member and having inturned ends which engage said SllOUltlOlS and the edge portions of said compression member, and a bolt or rivet extending vertically through said clamps, strut and compression member; substantially as set l ortl'i.
2.
