f. Be it known that I, FRANCIS SCHWEIZER, of Greenpoint, in' the county of Kings, State'of New York, have `invented a new'and improved Bolt-Heading Machine;
and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear,
andexactdes'cription thereof, lwhich will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same,l reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawing- .Figure 1 represents a plan or top yiew of this invention.

This invention relates to a bolt-heading machine, Vwhich is provided with two clamping-jaws, one stai tionary and the other reciprocating, or both reciproeating, with heading-dies, and with a reciprocating punch, all arranged on oneV and the same platform, or `bed-plate,l and operated by cams on one and the same shaft, the'clamping-jaws and heading dies being operated' byslides, with oblique ends, catching in oblique i "slotsin-the slides, to. which said-jaws and diesarc secured in such amanner' that the construction of the i whole mechanism is materially simplified, and that `-ready, access can he had to which supports the heading-mechanism, and they are operated by a slide with an oblique end catching in an oblique slot, said slide being operated by means of .a cam on the main shaft, which also imparts motion to the heading-mechanism.
In the drawing, the ,letter A designates the bed of my bolt-heading machine, and on this bed is secured a bar, B, in the end of which one of the clampingjaws, O, is fastelredyand which bar may be stationary or movable.

` which moves ina suitable guide-,groove in the bed A.
The required motion is imparted to this slide by a sliding cam, D, the oblique en d of which catches in an y oblique slot, a, in said slide, and which moves in a V-shaped guideway on the bed, being propelled at the j proper intervals by a cam., E, on the main shaft F, said sliding cam being made to pas's`through the slot a into a recess, fm, in the guideway.
The particular advantage of the oblique sliding cam D is that it imparts to the slide B a positive motion in either direction, so that the clamping-jaws are opened and closed at' the proper moment without fail, and at the same time the construction of said oblique t cam is very simple; and, furthermore, by'allowingthe cam to enter the recess m in the guideway, the jaw C is locked and enabled to retain the metal bar with great tenacity, while the head is being formed.
The heated bar from which the bolts are to be made is introduced between the clamping-jaws O C', being supported by a rest, b, the inner end of said bar being brought upagainst the face of the heading-punch G, as indicated in red outlines in fig. 1.
After the clamping-jaws have been closed by the action of the sliding cam D, the heading-punch is forced down by the action of a cam, H, on the4 main shaft F, and the end of the bar is upset, for the purpose of forming the head of the bolt.
The punch is Ysecdred in a slide, I, which moves in suitable guides on the bed A, and this slide is so the centre o f the main shaft by means of a screw-rod, 0, the book-shaped end of which catches over the end of said slide, while its Yscrew-shank passes through a lug, d, which is rigidly attached to the under side of the bed A. ' By .means oi" this adjusting-screw, the size of the bolt-head is regulated, for it is obvious that if the punch is set far back from the clamping -jaws, a greater length of the bar will be upset, and consequently more iron will be taken for the head than if said punch is set close to the clamping-jaws.
The punch G itself, howevermay also be adjusted in its slide I closer to or further from the clampingjaws without changing the throw of said slide, and in this case the quantity of iron taken for the head is also diminished, but at the same time the punch moves in closer to the clamping-jaws, and the thickness of the head to be formed can thereby be regulated.
The operation of adjusting the punch can be eiected by interposing washers between it and the slide, or by suitable wedges inserted behind its shank, and, if desired, 'the clamping-jaws may also be set' closer to or further from each other by means oi' wedges or keys inserted behind them, and thereby said jaws may be adjusted for metal bars of different thickness.

The heading-die may be V-shaped, dat, or in any other shape, according to the desired shape of the heads to be produced, and they are intended to be connected to their slides in such a manner that they can be set in or out, by means of wedges or keys inserted behind them.

One of the cutters is stationary, and the other is' attached to a slide, P, which moves in suitable guideways on the bottom surface of the bed, and to which a reciprocating motion is imparted by a earn-slide, Q, the oblique end of which catches in an oblique groove, p, in the cutter-slide P, and to which a reciprocating motion is imparted by a roller-cam, R, secured to the main shaft.
The end of the cam-slide Q is fork-shaped, so that the roller-slide acts on it in either direction, and imparts to it a positive motion both ways,and by the oblique cam on said cam-slide, the cutter-slide P also receives a positive motion in either direction. By these means, a bolt-heading machine is obtained, all the working-parts of which are situated either drectly on the upper or directly on the lower surface of the bed A, and receive their motion from cams which are secured to one and the same shaft, and thereby the construction and operation of my machine is materially simplified and facilitated.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The arrangement of cam-slides L L Dand slides I K K B B' on the upper surface of the bed A, camslide Q, and slide P, ou the under surface of said bed, in combination with cams E, B, N N, H, on the main shaft F, all as shown and described.
2. The mechanism for adjusting the header-gauge, in combination with the' device for adjusting the renaming-mechanism, arranged and operating as described.
