Specification of Letters Patent. i

. Application filed March 13, 1907] Serial No. 362,145.
the bottom formed separately from the sides and interlockedwith thesides.
In the drawings forming apart of this specification :--Figure l is aview of the blank from which the sides are constructed. Figs. 2 and 3 are views of the blanks from which the two-part bottom is formed. Fig. 4 is a perspective view ofthe box setup,a portion of the sides being broken out to show'the interlockingof the bottom. Fig. 5 is a section upon a reduced scale on the line 5-5 of Fig. 6. Fig. 6is a plan view of the box. Fig. 7 is. a plan viewof the modified form of bottom, being formed in one piece instead of two.
In these drawings A represe'ntsthe strip from which the sides of the box are constructed. These sides are formed by bend.- ing the strip A transversely andthe strip when bent upon the lines 1, 2, 3 and 4.. shown in Fig. 1, is divided into four square sides A, A A and A and the bend upon the line 1 forms an end flap A carried by the side A and thisflap is notched upon ops posite sides asshown at A to form tongues A. These sides are cut in order to interlock with the end flap A 'or with the bottom of the box in the following manner The side A is provided with two small longitudinally extending and obliquely arranged slots 44, which receive the tongues" A The other cuts formed upon the sides are intended to receive certain portions of the bottom of the box to be hereafter described. These slots consist of a curved slot 72, formed on the side A. The side A is provided with two obliquely transversely arranged slots 0, and a longitudinally extending slot 0 parallel to the lower edge of the side and between the said edge and the slots 0.
The side A is provided with one of the curved slots 2) and the side A is provided with the slots 0 and 0 similar to those formed in the side A The bottom of the box I prefer to form in two sections B and C. The section B is provided with an end flap B, formed by reducing the width of the section B, and this end flap is partially separated from the body portion of the section B by slots B The bottom section B is bent along the dotted line' B and also along the dotted lines B which last'mentioned lines areadjacent side edges'of the bottom section and are at right angles to and intersect the line of bending B The bottom section is also cut as shown'at 13*", which cuts are made upon the-line Bifrom opposite sides of the box to the intersections on the line B with the lines B Cuts B arealso formed in the end of the bottom portion B at right angles to the cut B and these cuts extend to the line B and form corner end fiaps B which lie between the cuts B and B, being joined to the body portion alongthe uncut portion of the line B between the inner ends of the cuts B and B". anend flap'B between the corner flaps B This construction leaves which end flap is notched to form oppositely extending tongues B The other section C of the bottom differs from the section B mainly in the absence of the. end flap B, and its tongue B It is folded or bent upon the lines C and C which correspond exactly with the lines B and 13*. It is provided with an end flap C and with corner flaps C corresponding exactly in construction with the corner flaps B and theend flaps B The body portion of the section is formed with obliquely disposed slots C which receive the tongues B thus locking the two bottom sections together. The construction of this bottom will be more clearly understood by reference to the modification in Fig. 7 where I have shown a bottom piece constructed exactly like the sectional bottom, so far as its interlocking with the sides of the box is concerned, and which difiers from the sectional bottom only in the fact that it isformed out of one piece, therefore, omitting tongues B and slots C This one piece bottom D is bent upon the transverse lines D and upon the longitudinal lines D is provided with corner flaps D and two end flaps D at opposite ends of the body portion D. It will be obvious therefore, that when the sections B and C are locked together, they form practically the same bottom as is formed by the bottom D.
In assembling the parts together the sides are bent upon the lines 1, 2, 3 and 4 and the tongues A] of the end flap A are brought into engagement with the obliquely arranged slots a, of the end A. Either the sectional bottom with the two sections locked together or the one piece bottom D may be employed in connection with the sides A. As the twopart bottom is my preferred form a brief description of the manner in which itis locked to the sides will be sufiicient since the one piece bottom is secured in exactly the same manner.
The bottom piece is bent upon the dotted lines thus forming a square bottom having a vertical flange running entirely around it which flange fits within the cube formed by the sides A. The end flaps B and C engage respectively, the slots 0 of the sides A and A. The tongues carried by these flaps, 0 and B", engage respectively, the obliquely disposed slots 0 of the sides A and A. This locks the bottom in position and the box is complete. It will be obvious from this description that the construction is very simple and that in order to provide the complete box it is only necessary to engage the tongues A of the sides with their respective slots and the flaps and tongues of the bottom section with their respective slots, and the locking of the box is complete.
The curved slot 7) forms ventilators adjacent the bottom of the box and permits free access of air to berries and small fruits thereby aiding in preserving them.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A box of the kind described consisting of sides formed of one piece, said piece be ing bent to form four sides and an end flap, the end flap interlocking with the side formed by the opposite end of the strip, alternate sides being provided with longitudinal slots adjacent their lower edge, and obliquely arranged transverse slots above the first mentioned slots, and a bottom provided with up-turned corner flaps, and having end flaps provided with tongues, said end flaps being carried by opposite ends of the bottom, the end flaps engaging the longitudinal slots of the sides and the tongues carried by the end flaps engaging the transversely arranged slots.
2. A box of the kind described comprising a strip bent to form four sides and an end flap, said end flap interlocking with one of the sides, and a bottom formed of two interlocking sections, each of said sections carrying an end flap provided with tongues, slots being formed in opposite sides of the box to receive the said end flaps and to receive the tongues, as and for the purpose set forth.
