No. 911,682. Specification of Application filed February 1 Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, 1909.
8, 1907. Serial No. 357,819;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EwALD SOHEUNERT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Silver Creek, in the county, of Sheboygan and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The improvements consist in vwhat is herein shown, described and claimed; the object of the invention being to provide simple, economical and efiicient filter devices for attachment to Water-supply pipes.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings represents a vertical longitudinal section view of a filter in accordance with my invention attached to a water-supply pipe, and Fig. 2, an elevation of they filter having its forward head removed.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates a cylindrical shell and B, 0, heads in screw-thread union with the ends of the shell. An outer hollow central boss I) of the shell-head B has screw-thread union with the end of a water-supply pipe D, and astopwith the pipe. Both heads B, G, are pro vided with central inner hollow bosses c, 01, respectively, and the forward head is provided with an outer hollow central boss 6 with which a clean-out stop-cock F has screw-thread union, both heads being centrally apertured.
Supported on the bosses c, d, of the heads B, C, is a helical-spring G covered with filtering cloth H within another helical-spring I by which to prevent bursting of the filtering material from inside pressure. A drawoil stop-cock J has screwthread engagement with the head 0 of the shell aforesaid.
The water fromthe supply-pipe isstrained through the filtering material II, to free it from impurities, and is drawn from the shell A, by opening the cock J, the cock F being opened from time to time to permit the fiushing out of accumulated impurities within cock E is preferably provided in connection. 1
the confines of said filtering material. The stop-cock E is closed when the filter is being connected to the water-supply pipe or removed therefrom. By removing either of the heads B, C, access is readily had to the interior of the filter, and it is practical to make the device with a single removable head, preferably the forward one.
It is to be understood that when the filter is assembled, the springs G, I, are under tension, and their tendency to expand keeps the filtering cloth H stretched in place against the heads B, C, while at the same time said cloth being tightly gripped by said springs, as a result of the coils of one breaking joints with those of the other, there will be a crimping of said filtering-cloth throughout its length due to swell of same when saturated, this crimping serving to more securely hold the aforesaid cloth in working position.
I claim:
A filter comprising a suitably headed shell attachable to a water-supply pipe and provided with draw-off and clean-out stop-cocks, a helical-spring supported on inner hollow bosses of the shell-heads, these bosses being in line with said pipe and draw-0E cock, filtering-cloth inclosing said spring, and another helical-spring surrounding the filteringcloth, both springs being under tension to keep said filtering-cloth in stretch against saidshell-heads and arranged to have their coils break joints whereby the aforesaid cloth will be crimped throughout its length when saturated and thereby more securely held in working position. v
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Silver Creekin the county of Sheboygan and State of VVisconsin in the presence of two witnesses.
