To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN F. OHMER and ELMER H. Bnmnneauen, citizens of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful L provements in Fare Registers and Recorders and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
T his invention relates to new and useful improvements in fare registers and recording machines.
T he improvements relate specifically to means for simultaneously shifting the direction indicator anddirection printer during the operation of taking a record or printed statement from the printing wheels.
lhe printing wheels consist of the specific fare registering wheels and various other wheels which may be utilized for obtaining records or printed statements of various data in connection with the statements taken from the registering wheels and the direction printer.
Preceding a detail description of the invention, in connection with the cooperative fea tures, reference is made to the accompan ing drawings. of which Figure 1, is a front elevation of a fare register and recording machine removed from its inclosing case. Figs. 2 and 3, are side elevations of the same with the inclcsing case appearing in section. 'i he mechanisms for actuating the direction indicator and the direction printer shown in these two views differ slightly. Fig. 4, is a detailed assembled view of the mechanism for simultaneously actuating the direction indicator and the direction printer as shown in Fig. 8. Fig. 5, is a detailed plan view of the eccentric bar of the printing devices. Fig. 6, is a detached view of a slotted link lever, the same being one ofv the elements of the mechanism for operating the direction indicator and direction printer. Figs. 7 and 8, are details of the same mechanism.
In a detailed description of the invention, similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts.

Arranged upon a common shaft 1 is a series of two or more sets of printing counters 2, each of which sets is designed to register a specific class of fares in a well-known manner.- lhe mode of operation and the mechanism for operating these fare counters and their respective fare indicators 3 are well-known and require no extended description herein. For example, such devices have been heretofore illustrated and described in many of the prior patents granted to John F. Ohmer, one of the present applicants, and to John F. Ohmer iointly with others, one of such patents being No. 694,322 of February 25, 1902. On the shaft 1 there are also mounted in printing alinement various other printing members or wheels l56-7 and 8 which are designed to print upon the same record various other matter, for example, the names of the months, the dates of the months, the numbers of the trips, etc. Also arranged upon the same shaft is a printing member or wheel 9 with suitable printing characters for printing upon said record the direction in which the car travels. This printing mem her or wheel 9 is suitably connected with a visible direction indicator 10 which is ex ppsed thrcugh a sight opening 11 in the front or the casing.
The direction printing member and the direction indicator are designed to be actuated during the operations of taking the records or printed statements from the aforesaid printing wheels and members. The impression devices forming part of the printing mechanism are also well-known features peculiar to many of the prior patents iereinbefore referred to, and such being the case, brief mention only will be made of these devices; they consist of feed rollers 12 and 13 through which the paper from a roll (not shown) is unwound; and inking roller 19 for inking the printing wheels and members, and an eccentric bar 14 whose well-known function is to elevate a pressure bar or pad with the paper thereabove, against the printing wheels or members after each operation of inking the same. The pressure bar is actuated by means of a key 15 which is insertile through a suitable opening in a side of the casing which incloses the machine or mechanism. On the other end of the eccentric bar 14, there is fixed a disk 16 on one side of which there is a pin 18 which engages the bifurcated end of a lever 20 which carries the inking roller 19 and when said pin thus engages the lever 20 the inking roller is moved against the printing wheels and devices to ink the same, which operation takes place just prior to the printing operation. The outer side of the disk or wheel 16 carries a pin 17 which trips a bell crank lever 21 which is pivoted at to the side frame 23 and is held normally in the positions shown in Figs. 2 and 3 by helical spring 24.
Referring to 2, the upper arm 21 of said bell crank lever has pivoted to it at 25 an arm 26 which supports at its upper end a pin 27 shown in dotted lines. livoted to the bell crank lever 21 and 21. is a pawl 28 which has a straight extension 29 which engages the lower extreme end of the arm 26, and owing to the tension of a spring 30 which connects to one end of said. lever 23 and to the bell crank lever, the said arm 26 is always maintained in a proper position to bring the roller 27 normally in the position shown in Fig. 2, which it will be observed is in a line with the pivots 31 and 25, the pivot 25 being the fulcrum of the arm 26. lhe pivot 31 is the fulcrum of a lever 32, one end of which is pivoted at 33 to a connecting bar 34 which extends from the side frame 35 which supports the direction indicator 1() to the direction printing wheel 9. It will be observed that the portion of said connecting bar 34 below the pivot 33 is bent at an angle as at 34 in front of the machine and has a slot 35 that receives a guide screw 36 which enters a cross piece 37 of the framework. 'lhe connecting bar 34 is thus guided in its movements and has an extension 33 on its lower end which connects with the direction print- Zing wheel 9. 'lhe frame 35 which supports the direction indicator is pivoted to the side frame 23 at 35 as is also the lever 32; the latter lever necessarily has a slot 46 in the end through which the pivot pin 33 extends in making the pivotal connection between the bar 34 and said lever. 'lhe portion of said lever beyond its pivot 31 has a slot 39 in which the pin 27 travels when the arm 26 is actuated through the bell crank lever 21 21 as said bell crank lever is tripped by the trip pin 17 hereinbefore referred to.
It will be observed that the slot 39 converges and that the normal position of the pin 27 is in the entrance to the upper branch of said slot, which position is due, as before stated, to the end of the arm 26 being engaged by the straight portion 29 of the pawl or lever 28. When the arm 26 is actuated and the direction indicator and the direction printing wheel are in positions to indicate the direction and to print the direction, the pin 27 rides in the upper branch of the slot 39 and lowers the direction indicator and moves the direztion printing wheel corres ondingly. The direction indicator and the d rection printing Wheel remain in such positionwand the arm 26 is returned to its normal position as shown in Fig. 2. Upon the next operation of said arm 26, the pin 27 moves in the rearward or lower branch of the slot 39 and elevates the direction indicator to an exposed position and the direction printing wheel to a corresponding position to print such indication. it will be borne in mind that the operations of the arm 26 in either case take place after the operation of printing a record or statement from the printing wheels and devices. The lever 32 has recesses 40 which are engaged by a spring detont 41 fixed to the side frame 23 and thus said lever 32 is suitably locked in either of its positions. The same idea of providing means which enables the direction inlicator and the direction printer to be moved simultaneously during the operations of printing records or statements, is carried out through the mechanism shown in Figs. 3 and 4 with some modification; for example, a slotted arm 42 is employed in lieu of the arm 26, but the said arm 42 is pivoted at 43 to the upper arm of the bell crank lever. The slot 44 in said arm 42 is substantially the shape of a heart and receives a pin 43 that projects from the side frame 23.
45 is a duplex lever, the pivotal end of which has an elongated slot 46 which permits of a suitable connection with the connecting bar 34 extending from the direction indicator to the direction printer.
The purpose of the slot 44 in the arm 42 is to permit of the necessary movement of said arm, and the purpose of the pin 43 is to provide a fulcrum for the duplex pawl 44, and also to provide for the attachment of a disk 46 on the outer end of the pin 43 to maintain said arm in suitable proximity to the duplex pawl.
As shown in Fig. 3, a cotter pin 47 is projected through the end of the pin 43 to maintain the disk 46 in position. A pin 47 projocts from the inner side of the arm 42 at the extreme upper end and lies across the upper portion of the duplex pawl 45. In the operations of the arm 42 the pin 47 engages the pawl 45 in the recesses 48 or 49 on either side of the pivot of said pawl, the tapering surfaces separating the two recesses serving to direct the pin into one or the other points of engagement with said pawl. A centering device is provided to perform the same function performed by the straight end 29 of the lever 28 shown in Fig. 2; this centering device comprises a heart-shaped piece 50 which is pivoted on the pin 43 on the inner side of the duplex pawl 45, said piece 50 having a slot 51 converging to an upper point and in which travels the pin 47 on the end of the arm 42. The pivotal piece 50 is under the control of a spring 52 which is attached to the side frame of the machine. Owing to the influence of said spring, the
pivotal piece 50 is maintained normally in the position shown in Fig. 4, and owing to such control of said pivotal piece, the arm 42 is normally maintained in a position in the converging end of the slot 51. The lower side of the duplex pawl 45 is provided with a series of recesses or serrations 40 which are engaged by a spring-controlled detent 53 which holds said pawl in either of its two positions.
We claim:
1. In a fare register and recorder, an indicator, a printer, a suitable connection between said indicator and printer, devices for taking an impression from the printer, and means actuated by said impression-taking devices whereby simultaneous movement is imparted to the direction indicator and the printer through the connection between the indicator and printer, said means comprising an angular member, an arm pivoted thereto, and loosely-connected devices between said arm and the connection between the indicator and the printer.
2. In a fare register and recorder, an indicator, a printer, a connection between the indicator and printer, impression devices for taking impressions from the printer, and means actuated from the impression devices for simultaneously shifting the indicator and the printer, said means comprising an angular member, an arm pivoted to said angular member, a lever pivoted to the connecting means between the indicator and printer, and a connection comprising a slot and pin between the arm and the lever.
3. In a fare register and recorder, an indicator, a printer, suitable connections between the indicator and the printer, impression devices for taking impressions from the printer, and means interposed between said impression devices and the intermediate portion of the connection between the indicator and the printer for imparting movement from the printing devices to the indicator and the printer. 7
4. In a fare register and recorder, a direction indicator, a direction printer, a connection between said indicator and said printer to cause them to move in unison, impression devices for taking impressions from the direction printer, and a series of levers actuated from the impression devices to impart simultaneous movements to said direction indicator and direction printer, said levers eX tending from the impression devices to an intermediate portion of the connection between the indicator and the direction printer.
5. In a fare register and recorder, a plurality of counters for registering and recording fare collections, a direction printer, devices for taking impressions from the fare counters and the direction printer, a direction indicator connected with the direction printer, means actuated from the impression devices for simultaneously shifting the direction printer and the direction indicator, said means comprising a pivotal member, an arm connected with said pivotal member, and a lever pivoted to the connection between the indicator and the printer, at an intermediate point of said connection.
6. In a fare register and recorder, a direction indicator, a direction printer, devices for taking impressions from said direction printer, a connection between the direction indicator and the direction printer, a bell crank lever actuated from the impression devices, and means interposed between said bell crank lever and the intermediate portion of the connection between the direction indicator and the direction printer whereby movement is imparted from the bell crank lever to the direction indicator and the direction printer to shift said indicator and printer.
7. In a fare register and recorder, a plurality of fare counters upon which are registered the different classifications of fares and from which is printed a record of such fares, a fare indicator associated with each fare counter, a direction printer, a direction indicator, a connection between said direction indicator and said direction printer, impression devices for taking an impression or print from the fare counters and the direction printer, and means actuated by the impression devices after the operation of taking such impression or print and whereby the direction indicator and the direction printer are simultaneously shifted, said means comprising a bell crank lever, an arm supporting a pin, means for holding said pin in normal position, and a lever interposed between said pin and the intermediate portion of the connection between the indicator and the printer.

In a fare register and recorder, a direction indicator, a direction printer, a suitable connection between said indicator and said printer, impression devices for taking an impression from the direction printer, an oscillating member joining the connection between the direction indicator and the direction printer at an intermediate point, a reciprocable member connected with said oscillating member, and means interposed between the reciprocable member and the impression devices whereby movement is imparted to said reciprocable member from the impression devices to simultaneously shift the direction indicator and the direction rinter.

Vindicator, a bell crank lever actuated by said l printing mechanism, a pin-supporting arm mounted on said bell crank lever, means for holding said arm in a normal position with the pin in alinement with the fulcrum of the duplex lever, and means controlled by the duplex lever to guide the pin on its supporting arm to either side of the fulcrum of said duplex lever to shil t the visible indicator and the printing indicator.
