have invented an Improuement in Bed-Motions for Printing-Presses, of which the following'description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is' a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like arts.
p This invention relates to mechanism for converting rotary motion into rectilineally reciprocating motion,and is particularly de signed for use in connection with the red rocatin' beds of printinq presses, thong it may e applied and use in any location and for any purpose for which the same is adapted.
'tion may be fully apparent, we have herein disclosed for illustrative purposes one type or embodiment of the invention in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the invention may be carried out by other embodiments thereof and by mechanism widely differing from that herein selected for illustration. Having. reference to that ty e or embodiment of the invention herein c iosen for the illustration, the bed of the printing-press is indicated at 1, such bed being constructed in .any suitable manner and operatively connected to mechanism to cause the continuously and uniformly running driving shaft,

gradually slowing down said movement until the bed is brought torest, and then gradually accelerating its movement in the opposite direction until it acquires the speed-of its uniform stroke.
In the usual operation of a printing-press of the bed and cylinder type, the printing bed carrying the printing surface is reciprocated. in the manner above stated, the pcrip'h'ery of the cylinder and paper thereon traveling in the printing operation at the same surfacespeed as the printing surface on the bed,.so that the paper is pressed against the printing surface with a rolling action and without any slip of one surface relative to the other along the line of contact between the cylinder and printing surface. In this-type of press the impression is commonly taken only in the travel of the bed in one direction under the cylinder, which continues to run in the same direction all the time that the press is in operation, and after the bed has made its forward and working' movement or stroke under the'cylinder the bed must be returned past the cylinder to the starting point preparatory for another 0 re. In t e return movement of the d the cylinder is commonly raised a little, so that its surface is entirely above and clear of the printing surface on the bed, which is now traveling in an o ")POSltE direction to the surface of the cylinder, which thus makes an idle revolution during the return or non-working stroke of the bed Generally speaking, the mechanism for driving the bed of such type of printing presses comprises a continuously rotating toothed gear and two racks connected with the printing bed so as to be positioned adjacent opposite edges of the gear, and means to cause engagement of one of the racks with said gear. to produce the principal part of a stroke in one direction, and to cause the engagement of the other rack with the gear, to produce the principal part of the stroke in.the other direction, the bed commonly running at uniform speed throughout the part of its stroke eifected by the rack and gm r, this being the same as the surtace speed of the cylinder during the stroke.
When the bed arrives at the end of such rack and gear movement, it cinncs under the control ol another mart. of the bed motion, which may be termed the reversing mechanism, and which acts to bring the bed to a stop at the end of a short movement beyond the rack traveling movement, and to start the bed in the revcr-e direction and bring it to the velocity of the rack driven movement by the time that the second rack arrives at and comes into engagen'icnt with the gear, at which time the reversing mechanism gives up cmtrol and the bed is again driven by the rack and gear movement to the point near the other end of its stroke, where the rewrsing mechanism again takes control and periornis a similar reversal of the movement. of the bed to that just described. That is to say, the reversing mechanism is designed to take the bed at full working speed, reduce its velocity by gradual dimination, uni i1 it is stopped and then move it in the opposite direction with a gradual acceleration until it is brought up to full working velocity in said o3posite direction.
In such type of mechanism the gear and the racks may bc relatively shifted in many ditl'ei'cnt ways, among which may be enumerated the following: The racks may be opposed in the, same vertical plane and the gear may be shifted vertica ly to engage the racks in alter-nation, or the racks may he oppo ed in diflerent vertical planes and the gear be shifted laterally from engagement with one rack to engagement with the other, or the relative movement may be accomplished by maintaining the gear stationary and bringing the racks alternately into engagement therewith by vertical or lateral movement. The racks and gear may be otherwise opposed or arranged to accomplish the same result.
Our invention is applicable to a gear and rack mechanism wherein the relative movement of said gear and racks is accomplished in any of the above indicated ways or in any other desired manner. Although that type or embodiment of the invention se lected for illustration discloses merely a gear adapted ,to be vertically shifted into engagement with racks in the same vertical plane, the principles of the invention may be ftltllQtl out in other ways.
A printing or impression cylinder is indicated at 2, said cylinder being driven in any preferred manner (Fig. 3) bya gear 3 at one end thereof. meshing with a gear 4 upon a reversing shaft 5, mounted in suitable bearings (i-G in the frame-work of the machine. said frame-work supporting therein tracks or ways 7, 8 and 9, preferably having sets of rollers 10, 11 and 12, receiving the bed 1.
The lower face of the bed-plate 1 is provided (Figs. 1 and 3) with an upper rack ltl and a lowcrrack 1 herein shown as facing each other and adapted to receive between them a pinion 1.3, said lower rack being positioned above the re\ ersing shaft 5. Since in the present type of the invention said racks are shown as stationary and the relative movement lJQtWGtll the pinion and racks is obtained by a shifting movement of said pinion, herein shown as a vertical shifting movement, said pinion 15 is so mounted as to be brought alternately into working relation with the upper and lower racks.
Heretofore, so far as we are aware, in that type of press wherein racks are empliiycd, the teeth whereof substantially face each other, the lower rack has been arranged below the reversin gear, so that said rack engages said g ar at the lower edge of the gear. Such a construction is objectionable in that the weight of the press is largely increased by the length of parts required to support the lower rack beneath the rovers ing gear, and furthermore, a compactness of structure, such as is procured according to our invention, cannot be secured, such former types of presses being necessarily high framed. By supporting both racks above the reversing shaft, it is possible not only to greatly diminish the vertical lengthof its parts required for the support of the lower rack, but the supports may be more lightly constructed, while still securing a firm and eliective positioning for the parts.
Since in the present type of the invention the lower rack is located above the reversing shaft, and since in such type of the invention said racks are arranged with their teeth facing each other, said racks are not engaged by a gear directly mounted upon the reversing shaft, but by any preferred form or type of mechanism, preferably receiving motion from said reversing shaft. \Vhile such mechanism may be of any desired type, in the present instance the reversing shaft is shown as provided with a bed reciprocating gear 16, to which motion ma be imparted in any desired manner, (Figs. 1 and 2) as by a pinion 17 upon a driving shaft 18. suitably supported in the frame-work of the machine, Preferably mounted upon the reversing snaft 5 or concentric therewith, and as herein shown upon the hub of gear 16, is a bell-crank lever 19. the upper arm 20 whereof carries the pinion 15, which in the present type of the invent on is shown as meshing with the Qjear 16 to receive a continuous movement of rotation, it being herein shown as shifted from one rack to the other by movement of the bell-crank lever 19, for which purpose the lower arm 21 may be provided with a roll 22, engaging a cam track 23 inone face of a cam 21, mounted upon a shaft 25 suitably l the machine (Fig. l) are stationary resupp'orted in the frame-work of the inachine. said shaft bein driven in any desired manner, at the proper speed. It is of course apparent that any suitable type of mechanism may be employed to' shift the said pinion 15, provided the relative movement between the pinion and the racks be obtained by a movement of the pinion. The said pinion 15 is preferably so mounted upon the arm 20 of the bell-crank lever 19 as to be constantly maintained in meshing engagementwith the gear 16. and thus to be at all times rotated thereby, it rolling thereon when shifted from one rack to the ther, and beingsufiiciently wide, as indicated in Fig. 2, simultaneously to engage both the gear 16 and one or the other of said racks. Since said pinion 15 is, in the present type of the invention, at all times 111 mesh with the gear 16, there is no possibility of failure of said pinion accurately to mesh with each rack when shifted for enflae'ement therewith.
Duringthe engagement ofthe pinion 15 with either rack. the bed of the press is driven at a uniform speedin one direction or the other. In thepresent type of the invention the parts are so proportioned as that one rotation ofbed reciprocating gear 16, and consequently four rotations of pinion 15 occur during the period of the engagement with said pinion 15 with either rack. The reversing shaft 5 in the present type of theinvention carries the primary reversing element or elements shown in the present embodiment of the invention to be the eccentrics 32, 32. It is course apparent that other types or embodiments of reversing elements may be employed and carried by said reversing shaft and we are in no sense to be limited to the particular type and embodiment shown and described.
Considering the type of mechanism shown, as the bed 1 nears its limit of travel to the right. the bed reversing rack 34' is brought into engagement with the reversing gear 2b, at which time the shifting'movement of pinion 15 commences, the said gear 26 being rotated because of its meshing engagement with the frame reversing rack 35 and the 9O 5, the eccentric connection being such that under the control of said gear 20, the movement to the right of said bed is gradually reduced to zero, and then gradually aug: mented in an opposite direction until the full working speed of the bed has been secured, at which time the pinion 15 has been brought into meshing relation with the other bed rack. the bed then passing from the control of gear 26 to the control of pinion 15. As the bed nears the end of its move ment in the opposite direction, a similar operation occurs through the instrumentality of the bed reversing raclt '3-1, the frame With the proportion of parts herein indicated one'half rotation of gear 16 occurs during each reversing movement of the bed. It is apparent. however, that the proportioning and timing of the various parts may be varied as desired. 'hile the extent of the shifting;- mo\ cment of gear 15 may be varied as desired, in the present type of the invention itmay be noted that a movement of pinion 1.5 equaling one pitch thereof is su'tlitient to carry the same from engagement w th one rack to eng c'ement with the otler.
Having thus described one type or einbodiment of the invention, it is to beunderstood that although the mechanism illustrated has. been: specifically referred to, descriptive terms are employed, not in their subordinate. but in their general sense and for descriptive purposes merely, and that the scope of the invention is set forth in the following claims:

A printing press having a reciprocable bed carryin opposed racks, a reversing shaft locate below said racks, an impression cylinder having a gear thereon, said reversing shaft carryin a gear in mesh with the gear of the sai der, a primary reversing member upon said reversin shaft, a bed reciprocating gear upon said reversing shaft between sald primary reversing member and said gear in mesh with the lmpression cylinder gear, and a rack driving gear driven from said bed reciprocating gear and means relatively to shift said opposed racks and said gear thereby to bring alternate racks into engagement with said ear.

A printing press having a reciprocable bed carrying opposed racks, a reversing shaft located below said racks, an impression cylinder having. a gear thereon, said reversing shaft carrying a, gear in mesh with the gear of the said impression cylinder, a priinary reversing member upon said reversing shaft, a bed reciprocating gear upon sa 1d reversing shaft between said primary reversing member and said gear in mesh with the impression cylinder gear, a rack driving pinion meshing with said bed reciprocating gear, and means to'impartrelative movement to said pinion and said racks whereb the racks may be engaged with said imon alternately.

A printing press having a reciprocable bed carrying opposed racks, a reversing shaft located below said racks and carrying a primary reversing element, a bed reciprocating gear carried by said reversing shaft, a rack driving inion oppositely rotated with shaft and meshing with said bed reciprocating gear, and pinion revolving mechanism to revolve said pinion from engagement with one rack to engagement with another while retaining it in mesh with said bed reciprocating gear.

A printing press having a reciprocable bed carrying rack mechanism, a rotating shaft located below such rack mechanism and having thereon a primary reversing element, bearings wherein said shaft is maintained in fixed alinement, a rack drivin pinion, a gear on said shaft wherewith'sai pinion is in mesh, and means to move said pinion in an arc in a vertical plane, whereb said pinion is caused to mesh with said rac mechanism to drive the same.

A printing press comprising an impression cylinder havinga gear, a reciprocable bed carrying a P am lty of opposed racks, a reversing shaft below said rac having a gear in mesh with said impression cylinder gear, a bed reciprocating gear iipon said reversing shaft, a rack driving pinion in mesh with said bed reciprocatin gear pinion shifting mechanism to shi sai pinion into alternate engagement with said opposed racks while maintaining it in mesh with said bed reciprocating gear, and reversing means operatively connected to said reversing shaft and adapted alternately to be brought into driving relation to said bed to reverse the movement thereof at the end of each stroke.
