RECORDING DEVISE Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY BRADFORD and HOMER V. PARIs, citizens of the United States, residing at Cave Spring, in the county of Floyd and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Im rovements in Recording Devices, of which t e following is a specication.
'Ihis invention relates to recording devices for steam boilers, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide simple and efiicient means for recording the steam pressure in a boiler at every hour throughout the day and night.
Another object of the invention is to provide a steam gage and time piece connected by mechanism or recording at each hour upon a removable disk the steam pressure of the boiler at each hour.
'Ihese and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a recording device made in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation and artial section of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear e evation showing the mechanism in one position. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the mechanism in the position which it assumes in recording the steam pressure upon the hour. Fig. 5 is a face view of a record disk with a record thereon, such as the recording device is adapted to make. I
Referring to the drawings for a more speciiic description of our invention the numeral 1 designates a base or support for the mechanism and 2 is an ordinary alarm clock or time piece supported in an opening in the base 1 while 3 is an ordinary steam gage also supported in the base 1 below the time piece 2. A steam pipe 4 establishes communication between the boiler and steam age. rlhe steam gage is provided with the or inary dial 5 and a hand or pointer 6 to indicate the pres sure of steam upon the dial.
Referring to Figs. 2, 3 and 4 a cam 7 fixed to the minute hand arbor 8 of the time piece at the back of the clock is arranged to rotate in contact with a roller 9 mounted upon the upper end of a sliding rod 10 iitted in a guide 11 secured at the back of the clock and rovided with lugs 12 through which the ro 1() freely passes. Below the guide 11 the rod 10 is bent outwardly at right angles as at 13 and upon said angular portion a downwardly extending finger 14 is provided. From the anl gular portion 13 the rod 10 is bent again at right angles to form the vertical member 15 which is mounted to slide in guides 16 and 17 secured to the rear side of the gage. Secured to the base 1 in rear of the steam gage 3 is a supporting plate 18, said plate being connected to the base 1 by means of suitable screws 19. '.lhe arbor 2() upon which the indicator hand 6 is mounted extends through the plate 18 and connected to the outer end of said arbor to rotate therewith is a disk 21, said disk being provided with a series of points or prongs 22. Rigidly secured to the plate 18 is a ring 23, said ring being secured to said plate by means of countersunk screws 24. rlhe ring 23 is provided with a rabbeted periphery and iitted in the rabbet to rotate therein is a ratchet disk 25, said disk having a series of peripheral ratchet teeth 26 and upon the face of said disk is produced the hour indicating numerals 27 from 1 to 12, as shown more particularly in Figs. 3 and 4.
Connected to the lower end of the vertical member 15 of the sliding rod 10 is a spring 28, said spring being connected to a keeper 29 on the plate 18 while the free end of said spring is provided with a perforation through which the member 15 passes and a nut 30 fitted to the end of the member 15 holds said spring in place. Carried by the member 15 is a pawl 31 which engages the peripheral teeth 26 of the disk 25. A hammer 32 provided with a long shank 33 connected to a pintle 34 is actuated by the sliding rod as will presently appear. 'I he intle 34 is journaled at its opposite ends in a earing(plate 35 provided with lugs 36 in which sai pintle 34 is journaled. A spring 37 secured to the pintle 34 and to the bearing 35 exerts its tension to normally hold the hammer 32 outward away from the back of the gage as shown in Fig. 2. A spring pawl 38 is secured to the bearing 35, said pawl engaging the teeth 26 to prevent the backward rotation of the disk 25. U on one end of the pintle 34 is an angular enlargement 39 dis osed in the path of the finger 14. A paper isk 40 having rinted thereon the same indicating num ers as are on the dial 5 of the gage is connected to the points 22 and a disk of carbon paper 41 is a so secured under the disk 40 upon said points 22. The rinted numbers on the disk 40 are dispose in the same relative position as the numbers on the dial 5. T he operation of our invention may be briefly described as follows: As the minute hand arbor of the time piece rotates the cam 7 raises the rod 10 against the tension of the spring 21 and as the cam 7 arrives at the position shown in Fig. 4 which is upon l an hour the roller 9 is released from the cam and the s ring 28 pulls the rod 10 downward until the iinger 14 strikes the enlargement 39 on the pintle 34 which actuates the hammer 32 to strike the pa er disk 40 immediately over the correspon ing hour on the disk 25.
The hour indicators 27 being raised from the disk 25 will be printed on the inner side of the paper disk 40. Since the disk is carried by the arbor 2O of the indicator hand 6 the hour will be printed upon the disk 40 in line with the iigures which indicate the steam pressure at that moment. As the cam 7 makes a complete revolution in one hour it will be obvious that the hammer 32 is actuated at each hour to impress the hour upon the under side of the paper disk 40 at one side of or near the figures which indicate the steam pressure at the time the hour is printed.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a recording device made in accordance With our invention will indicate u pon a paper disk thesteam pressure in the beller at each hour of the day and night. It Will be understood that the disks 40 are to be replaced by vnew disks containing only the figures of the steam pressure dial at stated intervals.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. A recording device, comprising a time piece, a steam gage, a ratchet disk mounted I to rotate at the back of said steam disk and having raised figures to indicate the hours, 'a disk connected to the arbor of the indicator hand of the gage, means for connecting a paper disk to said irst named disk, a cam connected to the minute hand arbor of the time piece, a sliding rod actuated by said cam, and means for rotating the ratchet disk and registering upon the paper disk each hour the steam pressi re indicated by the gage.
2. In a recording device, the combination of a time ieee, a steam pressure indicator, a cam on t e minute arbor of the time piece, a sliding rod, a pawl carried by the rod, a ratchet disk having the hours indicated thereon, a disk connected to the arbor of the pressi: re indicator hand, said disk rovided with oints or rongs, a paper isk provided wit a printe indicator dial thereon secured to said points or prongs, and means carried by the sliding rod for registering upon the paper disk each hour the pressure indicated by the ressure gage.
3. In a device of t e character described, the combination of a time piece, a steam pressure indicator, and connected mechanism comprising a cam, a sliding rod, a pawl, and a printing hammer for recording upon a paper disk the steam pressure at eac hour.
