UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR JUNGHANS, OF SCHRAMBERG, GERMANY.
LUMINOUS SUBSTANCE FOR INDICATORS.
. act description.
This invention relates to clocks, speed gages or the like and aims to provide certain improtements therein.
According to the .present invention the clock, speed gage or' other member is provided with a luminous compound so that it can be read in the dark.
The invention includes certain features of construction which render the illumination very effective.
As a luminous compound, I prefer to use a radium salt to which has been added crystalline sulfid of zinc or some other analogous substance.
There is shown by way of example i the accompanying drawingconstructional forms of indicating members, such as'indicators or pointers and dials in combination with the luminous substance containing ra-, dium.
Figure 1 is a dial showing the invention in which the luminous substance is in the form of oval fields or spaces over the figures. Fig. 2 is a dial with the luminous substance in dotted spaces or fields beside the figures. Fig. 3 is a dial, wherein the figures are arranged in fields provided with the luminous substance. Fig. 4 shows a dial wherein the luminous substance is provided in the form of a ring. Fig. 5 shows an indicator or pointer, the whole length of which is provided with the luminous substance. Fig. 6 shows an indicator or pointer with frame-like enlargement, whereon the luminous substance is provided. Figs. 7 and 8 show an indicator or pointer having recesses adapted for the reception of the luminous substance. Figs. 9 and 10 are indicators or pointers, wherein the luminous substance is inserted in a longitudinal aperture or recess of the front part of the indicator.
The luminous substance containing radium according to the present invention Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filedSeptember 27, 1907.
are readily visible in the dark.
Patented Feb. 2, 1909.
Serial No. 394,853.
may, as shown in the figures of the drawing, be provided either on the dials or on the indicators, or simultaneously on both parts.
The figures of the dials may be located beside or in the fields provided with the luminous substance and in both instances they As shown in the figures of the drawing, the indicators or pointers may also be provided with the luminous substance in different ways. In the indicator, as shown in Fig. 6, which is provided with a luminous rectangular frame (it may also be round or oval) the figures may be seen through the free opening. The indicator according to Figs. 1 and 9 is formed of two wires (1 and b in such a manner that the wires are soldered together at c in a point, while they are so soldered with their ends d and e to the bush f that a longitudinal aperture or recess is leftfor the reception of the luminous substance. The indicator or pointer may also be punched so as to form such longitudinal aperture (Fig. 10) in which case, the luminous substance is preferably attached to material containing collodium.
In any event the luminous substance should be on the outer side of the pointer or indicator. Preferably the substance is present in some considerable bulk where a high illumination is required. In this case the constructions of indicator shown in Figs. 1, 8, 9 and 10 are to be preferred.
What I claim asmy invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a clock, speed-gage or other similar device an indicator having a recess and a. luminous compound in said recess.
2. In a clock, speed-gage or other similar device an indicator formed oftwo wires fixed together and between them a luminous compound.
3. In a clock, speed-gage or other similar device an indicator having a longitudinal aperture and a luminous compound in said aperture.
t. In a clock, speed-gage or other similar device an indicator having at its outer surface a luminous compound in combination with a dial or the like having its figures or indicating divisions provided with a luminous compoun 5. A clock, speed-gage, or other similar device having a dial provided with a luminous compound in the form of fields or spaces of dotted form located at the figures .2 i j I 911401 of the dial, and having an indicator or In witness whereof, -I have hereunto pointer constructed of two .wires fixed 'tosigned my name in the presence of two sub- 10 gether to form betweenhthem a longitudinal scribing witnesses. aperture or recess, suc aperture or recess 1 5 extending substantially the length of the ARTHUR JUNGHANS' indicator or (fointer, and a luminous com- Witnesses: pound in sai recess extending to the outer CARL Wt'mz,
