No. 911,397. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented reue, 1909.
Application filed July 3, 1908. sen- 1 No. 441,824.
To all whom it may concern: part 4 and the shoulder provided at the base Be it known that I, SAMUnLW.HowELL,a l of the reduced part 4, are-upset or ribbed citizen of the United States, residing at to overlap, respectively, the end of the nut 5 Brookville, in the county of Franklin and and the boss 2, thereby insuring the formatate of indiana, have invented certain new i tion of a close joint between these parts and and useful Improvements in Means for Conpreventing contraction ofthe flue when cool necting Flues to Boiler-Sheets,of which the and from moving inward through the boss following is a specification. l or boiler sheet.
T Pr 'IIWBH-tiOH Provides & j in assembling the parts, the end of each connection for uniting the ends of fiues to flue 3 is passed through the boiler sheet and the sheets of steam boilers, thereby ad1n1tboss 2, and the shoulder 6 at the base of the ting of the fines being removed wh n rel reduced end 4 of the flue is upset or ribbed quired and insuring a tight joint under all so as to overlap the outer end of the boss 2. conditions and providing for packing the A washer 7 of asbestos or other material is joints so that any space or wear may be comslipped upon the reduced end 4 of the flue pensated for. r and is confined between the end of the boss For a full understanding of the invention and shoulder 6 and the end of the nut 5. and the merits thereofand'also to acquire a The nut 5 is next threaded upon the boss knowledge of the details of construction and and turned up tight to compress the washer the means for effecting theresult, reference 7 and insure the formation of a'tig'ht joint. is to be had to the following description and After the nut has been screwed home, the accompanying drawings. projecting end of the reduced part 4 is up \Vhile the invention may be adapted to set or ribbed, as indicated in Fig. 2, thereby difierentforms and conditions by changes in preventing inward movement of the fine with reference to the boiler sheet. Outward the structure and minor details without demovement of the flue is prevented by the parting from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment is shoulder 6 engaging with the end of the nut shown in the accompanying'drawings, in I 5 extending thereover. The great amount which: I c of metal provided at the joint, prevents the Figure 1 is a perspective view of a porsame burning out quickly'or being readily tion of a boiler sheet embodying the invenaffected by the change of temperature. The tion. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of a outer rib of the sh0ulder 6 engaging with portion of the boiler sheet, a flue and the theboss 2 and theouter rib of the reduced joint between said flue and sheet, the parts end 4 engaglng wlth the end of the nut 5, being on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a longiprevent inward movement of the flue with tudinal sectlonsimilar to Flg. 2, the nut and reference to the boller sheet when contractpacking being removed and showing the ing. 7 j r 5 q" formation of the end of the flue preliminary Having thus described the invention, what to upsetting its reduced extremity and the is claimed as new 15: r shoulder formed at the base of the reduced 1. In combination, a boiler sheet having end. i
i an opening and an integral boss extended Corresponding and like parts are referred outward from the sheet in line with said to in the following description and indiopening and exteriorly threaded, afiue fitted cated in all the views of the drawings by in said boss, and a nut threaded upon the the same reference characters.
said boss and having interlocking connec The boiler sheet 1. is formed with a series tion with the projecting end of the flue. of bosses 2 in line with the openings and 2. In combination, a boiler sheet having intended to receive the ends of the flues 3. an opening and a boss extended outward The bosses 2 are externally threaded. Each from thesheet in line with said opening and fine 3 has an end portion 4 reduced and of a exteriorly threaded, a flue fitted in said boss, length to project beyond the nut 5 and to be and having a reduced end extended beyond upset or ribbed, as indicated most clearly in the boss and having a shoulder at the base Fig. 2. The flue 3 is of a size to fit snugly of the reduced end, a nut threaded upon said within the boss 2 and the reduced end 4 proboss and having its end engaging with the jects through an opening in the end of the shoulder formed at the base of the reduced end of the flue and having said reduced end nut 55. The projecting end of the reduced projected. through an opening in the end of the nut and ribbed or upset.
3. In combination, a boiler sheet having an opening and a boss extended outward from the sheet in line with said opening and exteriorly threaded, a flue fitted in said boss, and having a reduced end extended beyond the boss, and having a shoulder formed at the base of the reduced end, said shoulder being upset or ribbed to engage With the outer end of said boss, and a nut threaded upon the boss and having its end engaging With the shoulder formed at the base of the reduced end of the flue and having said reduced end projected through an opening in the end of the nut and ribbed or upset.
4. In combination, a boiler sheet having an opening, and an externally threaded boss in line with said opening, a flue fitted in said boss and having a reduced end, a shoulder forzned at the base of the reduced end, said shoulder being upset to engage with the end of the boss, a Washer mounted upon the reduced end. of the fine, and -a nut. threaded upon the said boss and having its end confining the Washer between itself and the end of the boss and shoulder formed at the reduced end of the flue, said reduced end projecting beyond the nut and upset or ribbed to overlap the same.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
