Be it known that I, BENNO VOM EIGEN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at. Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looks for Purse or Bag Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawbag-frames, and the like; and the inventionv has for its prlncipal ob ect to provldefa neat and simply constructed lock of the general character hereinafter more fully set forth,
and the parts of which can be readily arranged in their assembled and operative relations, and are readily manipulated in the manner as will hereinafter more fully appear.
Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following de: tailed description of thisinvention.
With the various objects of my presentinvention in view, the same consists, primarily, in the novel bag-lock, and its key-operated mechanism therefor; and, the invention con sists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims, which are appended to and which form an essentia part of the specification.

Fig. 1a is a transverse section taken on line other bag-frame section which is provided with the usual right-angled portion or member l, the said bag-frame-section 8 being adapted to be moved within the other bagframesection 1 in the usual manner, when the two bag-frame sections are brought into their closed relation.
As indicated more particularly in Figs. 4, 9'and 10, the said bag-frame section 3 has suitably secured to the inner or under surface of its right-angled portion or member 4, preferably by means of pins or rivets 5, the plate 6, said plate being provided with suitably formed and forwardly extending portions 7 which are provided in their forward ends with suitably formed hook-shaped engaging or retaining members 8, as clearly illustrated.
As shown more particularly in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, the right-angled member or portion of the other frame-section 2 is provided with suitably disposed holes or openings 9, and with longitudinally extending openings or slots 10.
The referencecharacter 11 indicates the lock embodying the principles of my present invention and the same comprises a suitably formed main or lower chambered shell or body 12 having the longitudinally extending sides or flanges 13 and ends 1%, said ends 1% being provided with downwardly extending lugs or tongues 15 whic 1 are adapted o be inserted in the openings or holes 9 of the part 2 of the frame-section 1, and then bent at right angles against the under surface of said part 2, so a. to secure the said chambered shell or box 12 upon the outer surface or face of the right angle portion 2 of said frame-section 1, which will be clearly evident. in its upper surface, the said chambered shell or box 12 is provided with a centrally disposed hole or opening 16 and with a pair of longitudinally extending openings or slots 1? corresponding to the longitudinally extending slots or openings 10 in the portion 2 of the framesection 1, as clearly shown. The upper surface of the said chamber shell or box 12 is also provided with a pair of downwardly extending lugs 18 which are forced out of the metal, substantially shown, or other suitable fastening means with which may be suitably connected suitably formed coiled springs 19, substantially as shown and for the purposes to be presently more fully described. Extending downwardly from the lower marginal. edge of the reduced portion of each sliding bolt is a shank or post-like member. 41 which is provided with a suitable peroration 4:2 or other suitable means for the attachment thereto, to-each of said members 4:1, of the opposite end-portions of the previously mentioned coiled springs 19 which cause the said sliding bolts and parts connected therewith, under normal conditions, to be retained in the positions indicated in the Figs. 1,2, 3, 6, 7 and 11 of the drawings.
From an inspection more particularly of Figs. 5, 6 and. of the drawings, it will be seen that the previously mentioned flat bodymember or portion 27 01 the bolt-retaining post is provided with a downwardly extending shank or portion 43 which extends into and is rotatably arranged in the centrally disposed opening or iole 16 in the upper surface of the shell or box 12, the said shank or portion 43 having suitably fitted and secured thereon a. rectangular or other suitably shaped nut-like member 44, which has its sides in rotatable frictional engagement with the bolt-portion of a pair of springs 45 suitably arranged and secured within the chambered portion of said shell or member 12, as clearly shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, and the purposes of said nut-like member and springs being to give a certain snapping action to the said bolt-releasing member or post at each quarter turn, as will be clearly understood from an inspection of said fig-.

When the said oscillatory bolt-releasing member or post is in the position indicated in Figs. 4, 7 and 8 of the drawings, the edge-portions 33 of the fiat body-part 27 having been moved out of engagement with the end-portions 40 of the sliding bolts, it will be clearly evident, that when the operator applies pressure upon the finger-pieces 35 of the respective bolts, the said bolts can be moved against the action of the springs 19 in opposite directions, from the positions indicated in Figs. 3 and 7, to the position shown in Figs. 4 and 8, so as towithdra-w the downwardly extending shanks or post-like members 41 from their held or locked relation with the hook-shaped engaging retaining members 3 of the framesection 3, so that the two frame-sections can be separated and brought into their opened relation, as will be clearly evident. When the pressure is released from the fingerpieces 35 of the said bolts, the springs 19 will return the said sliding bolts automatically into their normal initial positions, and the said hook-shaped engaging or retaining members 8, when the bag-frame sections are brought into their close relation, readily slide into their locked or holding engagement with the said posts or shanks 41 as will be clearly evident. 7
By inserting the shank 33 of the key 32 into the slotted or socketed portion 38 of the boltreleasing member or post, and turning the body-portion 27 against the stops 32, so as to bring the edges 33 between and against the respective ends 40 of the sliding bolts, in the manner shown in Figs. 6 and 11 of the drawings, it will be evident that the said sliding bolts are immovably held by means oi the said body-portion 27, and the two frame-sections of the bag-frame cannot be separated or brought into their opened relation. V hen, however, by means of the key, the said flat-body-portion or member 27 is turned against the said stops 22, into the dotted position indicated in Fig. 11 and as will be evident from an inspection of several figures of the drawings, the said sliding bolts are once more free to move so as to bring the said shanks or members 41 out of their holding or locked engagement with the hook-shaped members of the bagframe section 3, so that the said frame- sections 1 and 3 can be separated or opened. The operation of the various parts will be clearly understood from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings and it will be clearly evidentthat I have produced a simply constructed bag-frame lock, the parts of which have been reduced to a minimum and which can not easily get out of order.
I am fully aware that changes may be made in the arrangements and combinations of the various parts as well as in the details of the construction of the same without departing from. the scope of my present invention as set forth in the appended claims. Hence, I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts as described in the foregoing specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

A bag-frame lock comprising a main chambered casing having means for attaching it upon a frame-section, said casing being provided with elongated openings, an upper housing secured upon the upper face of said casing, said housing being open at its opposite ends, a pair of spring-controlled bolts slidably arranged in said housing,
each bolt having an end-portion extending from an opening 1n the end of the housing, alaterally enlarged finger-piece at the projecting end of each belt for sliding each bolt and limiting its movement, a shank projecting downwardly from each bolt, each shank extending through an elongated opening of said casing and being movably arranged therein, and an oscillatory bolt-retaining member within said housing, said member being provided with a flat bodyportion having its opposite marginal edges normally in alinement and in engagement with the opposing endportions of said sliding bolts located within said housing, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A bag-frame lock comprising a main chambered casing having means for attaching it upon a frame-section, said casing being provided with elongated openings, an upper housing secured upon the upper face of said casing, said housing being opened at its opposite ends, a pair of spring-controlled bolts slidably arranged in said housing, each bolt having an end-portion extending from an opening in the end of the housing, a laterally enlarged fingenpiece at the projecting end of each bolt for sliding each bolt and limiting its movement, a shank projecting downwardly from each bolt, each shank extending through an elongated opening of saidcasing and being movably arranged therein, and an oscillatory bolt-retaining member within said housing, said meinbe being provided withaflat body-portionhaving its opposite marginal edges normally in alinement and in engagement with the 0pposing end-portions of said sliding bolts located within said housing, the said housing being provided in its upper surface with a centrally disposed opening, and said flat body-portion of the oscillatory bolt-retaining member being provided with an upper enlarged portion having a part rotatably arranged in said opening and being provided with adiametrically extending slot and a receiving socket for the insertion of the shank of a key therein, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. A, bag-frame lock comprising a main chambered casing having means for attaching it upon a frame-section, said casing being provided with elongated openings, an upper housing secured upon the upper face of said casing, said housing being open at its opposite ends, a pair of spring-controlled bolts slidably arranged in said housing, each bolt having an end-portion extending from an opening in the end of the housing, a laterally enlarged linger-piece at the projecting end of each bolt for sliding each bolt and limiting its movement, a shank project:- ing downwardly from each bolt, each shank extending through an elongated opening of said casing and being movably arranged therein, ant an oscillatory bob-retaining member within said housing, said member being provided with a flat body-portion iaving its opposite marginal edges normally in alinement and in engagement with the opposing end-portions of said sliding bolts located within said housing, and up ardly extending lugs forced out of the upper surface of said main chambered casing, said lugs torming stops for hunting the oscillatory movement of said bolt-retaining member, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. i

A bag-frame lock comprising a main chambered casing having means for attaching it upon a frame-section, said casing being provided with elongated openings, and a centrally disposed opening, an upper housing secured upon theupper face of said casing, a pair of spring-controlled bolts slidably arranged in said housing, each bolt consisting of a chambered shell, said shell being open at one end, and being provided at the other end with a laterally enlarged fingerpiece, a solid body arranged within each chambered shell, retaining, lugs extending from the lower marginal edge-portions of said shells, said lugs being bent beneath the said solid bodies for securing said bodies within the respective shells, a holding catch-retaining shank connected with each solid body and extending through an elongated opening of said main chambered casing and being movably arranged therein, an oscillatory bolt-retaining member within said housing, said member being pro- ;vided with a fiat body-portion having its opposite marginal edges normally in aline- -me11t and in engagement with the opposing end-portions of said sliding bolts, a shank projecting downwardly from said flat bodyportion, said shank extending through the centrally disposed opening of said main chambered casing and into said casing, a nut-shaped member upon said shank, and a spring within said casing with which the side-portions of said nut-shaped member are adapted to be brought in slidable engagement, the said housing being provided in its upper surface with a centrally disposed 'opemng, and said flat body-portion of the oscillatory bolt-retaining member being provided with an upper enlarged portion having a part rotatably arranged in said opening and being provided with a diametrically extending slot and a receiving socket for the insertion of the shank of a key therein, and upwardly extending lugs forced out of the upper surface of said main chambered casmg, said lugs forming stops for limiting the oscillatory movement of said bolt-retaining member, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
