East Liverpool, in the county of Columbiana,

State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat, Coat, and Um-.-

brella Racks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to devices for holding hats, coats, umbrellas, and the like and locking them securely in placeso that they can not be surreptitiously removed, and has for one of its objects to simplify and improve the construction and increase the eficiency and utility of devices of this character.

Anotherobject of the invention is to provide a simply constructed. device whereby a hat, a coat or other garment, an umbrella, a

cane or like article may be secured in place and all or any one of the articles removed without disturbing the others. 7

With these and other objects in View the invention consists in a base member having a plurality of pegs or suspending devices to receive and support a hat, a coat or other garment, an umbrella, cane or the like, a frame swinging over the base and adapted to engage over the hat and to secure the other articles upon their support, and a lock adapted to engage the swinging member and lock it in position.

The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention.

The improved device comprises a base 10 of any suitable form and of any suitable material but will preferably be pressed from sheet metal of sufficient fgage to 'withstand the strains to which it will be subjected, and to properly supJ ort the attach-' ments connected therewit Thebase 10 is adapted to be attached in any suitable locality, preferably to a wall indicated at 11,"

Projecting from the plate 10 is a pin or peg 12 to receive the hat represented at 13. Dis osed in front of the plate 10 is an elliptica member 14 with its inner open portion conforming to the crown of the hat and sufficiently large to avoid crushing the hat, and

provided with upwardly extending spaced arms 15 swinging upon a pintle 16 passing through ears 1? on the plate 10, the members 15, 16 and 17 thus forming a hinge connection between the member 14 and the plate 10. Surrounding the pintle 16 is a spring 18 with one end bearing against the plate 10 and the other end bearing against the inner face of the member 14, and exerting its force to hold the member 14 and its attachments outwardly away from the member 10 when not in use.

Projecting from the side of the member 14 op osite to the hinge is an arm 19 preferably orked at its lower end to form a recess 20 adapted to engage over a pin 21 extending from the plate 10 and adapted to receive a coat or other garment, as hereafter explained.

Projecting from the plate 10 at one side of the arm 19 are spaced pins 2223 between which the handle portion 24 of an umbrella is adapted to be passed, the spaced pins thus forming a support for the umbrella. Projecting from the arm 19 is a smaller lateral arm 25 adapted to bear across the handle portion 24 0f the umbrella and thus hold it securely between the ins, while the forked end of the arm 19 secure y holds any garment which may be suspended from the pin 21; By this simple means it will be obvious that when a hat is placed upon the peg 12, a coat or other garment hung upon the pin 21 or an umbrella, cane or the like supported upon the spaced pins 2223 and the member 14 With its arm 19 moved downwardly against the action of the spring 18 the elliptical portion 14 will bear upon the hat rim and securely retain the hat, the forked portion 20 of the arm 19 will pass over the pin 21 and hold the coat thereon, and the smaller arm 25 will secure the umbrella in place between .the spaced pins.

By this simple means the owner of the article holding the key to the lock can be assured that his property will remain safely connected to the improved device and its surreptitious removal prevented.

If the owner requires either one of the articles held by the device he simply inserts the key into the lock and releases the mem ber 1419, removes the article desired without disturbing the other articles, and restores the member 14-19 to its former position. Either one of the articles may thus be removed without disturbing the remaining articles or any number less than all of the articles may be moved in the same manner without disturbing the other articles.

The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured and of any suitable material, and in any ornamental or fanciful design.

The parts will preferably be entirely of metal, and may be stamped, pressed, cast or otherwise constructed and plated, apanned, or otherwise treated or protected, as may be preferred.

What is claimed, is

1. A device of the class described comprising a base having a projecting member adapted to receive and support a hat, a projecting member adapted to support a coat, and spaced projecting members adapted to support an umbrella or like article, an elliptical member hinged at one end to said base and adapted to fit over the crown of a hat supported upon the hat supporting member, said elliptical member having a projecting arm formed with a forked portion bearing over the coat supporting member and said arm formed with a lateral projection adapted the projecting arm.

2. A device of the class described comprising a base having a projecting member adapted to receive and support a hat, a projecting member adapted to support a coat, and

spaced projecting members adapted to support an umbrella or like article, an elliptical member hinged at one end to said base and adapted to fit over the crown of a hat supported upon the hat supporting member, said elliptical member having a projecting arm formed with a forked portion bearing over the coat supporting member and said arm provided with a lateral projection adapted to extend adjacent to the umbrella supporting members, said arm having a keeper,

and a lock connected to said base and having a bolt engaging said keeper.

3. A device of the class described com prising a base having a projecting member adapted to receive and support a hat and a projecting member adapted to receive and support a coat and spaced projecting members adapted to support an umbrella or like article, a member swinging at one end from said base and provided with an opening adapted to fit over the crown of a hat supported upon the hat supporting member, said swinging member having a projecting arm formed with a forked portion bearing over the coat supporting member and. said arm provided with a lateral projection adapted to extend adjacent to the umbrella supporting members.
