Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. DORSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indiana olis, in the county of Marion and State of In iana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vegetable-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to that class of devices by means of which vegetables are sliced for use, and it consists in various details of construction and arrangements of parts whereby economy and efficiency are secured. A vegetable slicer embodying my said invention will first be described, and the novel features thereof then pointed out in claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a top of plan view of a vegetable Slicer embodyin my said invention; Fig. 2 an underside p an thereof; Fig. 3 a transverse vertical sectional view, on an enlarged scale, at the point indicated by the dotted line 2 2 in Fi l; Fig. 4 a detail sectional view, on a stil further enlarged scale, as seen when lookin in the direction indicated by the arrows rom the dotted line 4 4 in Fig. 1 and Fig. 5 a detail sectional view at fighe point indicated by the dotted line 5 5 in 'I he frame of my improved vegetable cutter consists of two side pieces 21 and 22 and a series of transverse bars 23 (four are shownsee Fi 2) to which said side pieces are secured y screws 24. Resting on the upper sides of the cross bars 23 and entering grooves in the facing sides of the side pieces 21 and 22 are thin floor parts 25. These are preferably so cut that t e grain of the wood of which they are formed runs parallel to the knife blades, and by this means the full length of the wood is maintained throughout the full distance adjacent to the knife edges, so that no corners are likely to split off. The Hoor members 25 are made somewhat narrower than the eXtreme distance between the bottoms of the grooves in the side pieces into which the edges of said floor parts enter, which admits of some shrinking and swelling of said floor parts without distorting the device in any way, or disturbing the adjustments of the knives.
The iioor parts (by which I mean the two parts or portions of the floor on the two sides of the space or opening by which they are separated and in which the knives 31 are situated) are prevented from slipping endwise in the groove in which they are mounted by means of screws 26 or nails or other attaching devices connecting said parts to the cross-bars 23.
The knives 31 are preferably two in number, and extend diagonally across the structure between the side pieces 21 and 22 at an angle of about 45 degrees. These knives are secured to clips 32 by means of clamping screws 33, which pass through said knives and the horizontal members of the clips 32 and enter suitable nuts 34; and said knives are adjusted to the desired angle by means of adjusting screws 35 which pass through the horizontal members of the clips 32 and enter suitable nuts 35. This is best illustrated in Fig. 4. The clips 32 have ears 37 which hold the nuts 36 from turning; while the main wall of said cli s 32 holds the nuts 34 from turning, as wil be readily understood upon an examination of the drawing. The clips themselves are held in place by means of flanges 38 formed thereon, which enter a suitable groove in the adjacent sidebar of the frame of the cutter, and small nails 39 which are driven through said clips into said side bars-all as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination, in a vegetable cutter, of a frame composed of two grooved side pieces and a plurality of transverse bars eX- tending between said side pieces to which they are secured, floor dparts resting on said transverse members an entering the grooves of the side pieces but not normally pressing the bottoms thereof, and diagonally arranged knives arranged between the licor parts and secured to said side pieces.
