Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 26, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED EARTH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of i isconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slicing- Machines and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in claims its object being to provide simple, economical and effective lightrunning, variable feed machines for slicing bread, meats, vegetables and other foodstuffs; these machines being especially designed for the butcher, grocery, hotel and restaurant trade.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a sectional side elevation of a slicing machine in accordance with my invention Fig. 2, a plan view of the same having parts thereof in horizontal section; Fig. 3, a transverse section view of the machine indicated by lines 33 in Fig. 1, and Fig. l, a similar view indicated by lines 4-4 in Fig. 2.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates a base provided with standards B adjacent to its corners. The upper ends of the standards are fashioned to constitute bearings for parallel shafts C provided at their ends with cranks D, E, said cranks of each shaft being at a right-angle to one another. The base is also provided with guides F for shoes G upon the underside of a cutting-board H, and a rack I is attached to a longitudinal edge of the board. The other longitudinal edge of the board is provided with a socket b for a post J that engages an eye-end of a clamp-arm K, and a set-screw c is employed to bind the arm in vertically adjusted position on the post.
The upper end of another standard L on the base A is provided with bearings for a rock-shaft M having a crank N in pivotal connection with a pawl O engageable with the rack aforesaid. Another crank P of the shaft M has an eye-end engaged by a screw d having an adjusting nut e thereon, and a spiral spring Q connects the screw with a screw-eyef or other suitable fastening device with which the aforesaid base is provided.
Set in an upper recess 9 of the crank P is a plate R havn a bevel end it and a longitudinal slot '5, which slot is engaged by a plate-binding set-screw with which said crank is provided. The bevel end of the plate R is in the path of a similar end 7c of a wiper S secured by a set-screw m or otherwise on one of the shafts C, and the throw of the pawl C is determined by the adjustment of said plate. Arranged in connection with an arm a of the standard L is a stop-screw p in opposition to the crank P, and by means of a setnut g thereon, the stop-screw is held in adjusted position.
The front of the base A is provided with guides S for a slicing knife T having eyes engaged by collars r of rods 8 constituting arbors for handles U, and these arbors are adjustably secured in longitudinal slots of the cranks D by means of set-nuts u, said slots permitting adjustment of the knife to compensatefor wearing away of the same at its edge. One of the slots is shown at t in Fig. 3.
A bar V is employed in connection with the cranks E to balance the knife and to prevent sticking of the same on dead-centers The material to be cut is held on the cutting-board H by an adjustment of the clamparm K vertically of the post J, said cuttingboard being then run back on its guides. The thickness of the slices to be cut is determined by the set of the plate R to regulate the throw of the pawl O in engagement with the rack I of the cutting-board. When the wiper S is in contact with the plate R, the slicing knife is elevated above the material to be cut, and during the contact of said wiper with said plate the shaft M is rocked against resistance of the spring Q to slip the pawl O the predetermined distance on the rack I, and when said contact is broken, the contraction of said spring results in a reverse rock of said shaft to effect a forward feed of the cutting-board and material thereon under the descending knife, said cutting-board and material being stationary when the cut of the knife takes place.
I claim:
1. A slicing -Inachine comprising a base and standards thereon, a pair of parallel shafts for which certain of the standards are provided with bearings, cranks on opposite ends of each shaft, the set of the cranks being at right-angles to one another a knife in connection with the cranks at one end of the machine, and a bar connecting the cranks at the opposite end of said machine; a bevel-end wiper attached to one of said shafts, a cutting-board guided on the base and provided with a rack, a rock-shaft for which a standard on the base is rovided with bearings, a rackengaging paw in crank-connection with the rock-shaft, a spring connecting said base and a crank of the rock-shaft, and a bevel-end plate adjustable in connection with the latter crank to come in the path of said wiper.
2. A slicing -machine comprising a base and standards thereon, a cuttingboard guided on the base and provided with a rack, a post in connection with the cutting-board, and a clamping-arm having vertically adjustable connection with the post; parallel shafts for which certain of the standards are provided with bearings, cranks on opposite ends of each shaft, the set of the cranks being at right-angles to one another; a knife in connection with the cranks at one end of the machine, and a bar connecting the cranks at the opposite end of said machine; a bevel end wiper attachable to one of said shafts, a rockshaft for which a standard on the base is provided with bearings, a rack-engaging pawl in crank-connection with the rock-shaft, a s ring connecting said base and a crank of t 1e rock-shaft, and a bevel-end plate adjustable in connection with the latter crank to come in the path of said wiper.
