APPARATUS FOR PARLOR-AGAMES.

Eli-he Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES N. Hov'r, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and improved Device for Parlor- Games, 85e.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my said device;

Figure 2 is a plan ofthe same and Figures 3, 4, 85o., are details of its construction.

My invention is an apparatus, consisting of one or more wheels, arranged to turn-freely on a common axis, and a brake, or stop, to arrest the rotation of such wheel, or wheels, at will, to present in a given position diiierent devicesor combinations of devices, consisting of numbers, emblems, Src., that indicate certain chances, or stages, of some entertaining game, of the character of the well-known Mansion of Happiness, i The Royal Game of Goose, and others.

.As shown i'n the drawings, the apparatus is designed to represent, and is a substitute for dice, for the game oi"backgammon, (as the simplest illnstrationoi its purpose,) and consists of two hexagonal wheels, A B, that turn freely on the axis, or pivot (l, the planes, or faces g, of which are marked with numbers, or dots, from oneto six, inclusive, and mounted in a suitable standard, F, to which is applied thebrake, or stop H, consisting of a flat spring, fixed at one end in the base of the standard, and bearing against one of the'faces of the said wheel, to arrest its movement, and capable of being removed from contact with the wheel, to allow it to turn freely by an impetus given it by the hand or finger ofthe player. v

'lo produce dierent combinations of numbers, &c., the diterent'wheels, which may be of any desired material, are made of' different weight, and with the material so distributed, or disposed in their construction, that by the same impetus the two or other number of wheels will turn with different velocities'on the common axis; that is to say, one of the wheels, A,' iig. 3, may be solid, and be ixed to the axis, Whilev the other, or others, are more or less hollow, like B,

iig. 3, and turn loosely on the axis, with a greater or less weight of material near the wheels periphery, to cause it to revolve more or less rapidly, so as to insure the presentation of different combinations of numbers,

or devices, with every trial, when arrested by the said brake or stop.

In carrying out my said invention, I. propose to make use of wheels of larger diameter, with many faces, and

4to have printed, wrought, or otherwise xed on these faces, mottoes, sentiments, emblems, devices, &c., forming distinctive features and stages of well-known or newly-devisedA games, for parlor and home-entertainment for young persons, for which pnrposexthe said apparatus is peculiarly adapted.

What I claim, is'- he apparatus, as described, composed of oneor more wheels, and a brake or stop, constructed for operating as and for the uses and purposes specified.
