Description

W. B.VFOWLER.
V Paper Drier; No. 91,007. v Patented Jfune 8, 1869.
'mamil tartne WALTER B. FOWLER, OF LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 91,007, dated June 8,1869.
IMPROVED PACKING- IN CYLINDERS I'OR IDRYING- PAPBR.
The Scheule referred to in these Letters Patentiand making part of the same.)
To all whom it mag conce'm i Be it known that I, WALTER B. FOWLER, of Lawrence, in the county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Paeking- Box for Rotary Steam-Driers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specifieation, in whic Figure 1 represents a Vertical longitndinal section of my improved packing-hox.
Figure 2 is an outer-end view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate con'esponding parts.
' This invention relates to a new box for packing the fixed pipe in the end of a hollow rotating steam-eylinder, used on drying-apparatus of paper-machines.,
The object of the inventionv is to so construct all parts, that the steam will serve to make a tight joint.
The invention consists in iorming shoulders on the inner end of the steam-pipe, and an internal shoulder onl the box, and in applying a packing-nut, all parts being combined and Operating so that the steam will compress the packing between one shoulder of the pipe and between the nut, -to produce a tight joint.
A, in the drawing, represents acylinrical packingbox, provided with a flange, a, at its inner end, whereby itis, by means of screws or bolts, fastened to the end of a hollow rotating cylinder, which'is to be filled with steam.
On the inner end of the box A is also formed an 'internal shonlder, b, against which a flange, c, on the steam-pipe B, is fitted. The steampipe is fitted through the box, so that it projects from the outside of the same, the flange c being on its innermost' end, as shown. i v
Another, Smaller flange, on the pipe b, rests against the packing C, which is held in place by a nut, D. The packing is of rubber or other suitable material.
The box A and nut D revolve with the cylinder, which is shown by red lines in fig. 1, while the pipe B remains staticnary. The steam, which is conducted into the cyl'rnder through the pipe B, presses against the inner end of the same, and serves' thereby to force the flange against th'e packing, compressing the same, to form a tight joint.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the packing-box A, having the flange a and shoulder b, with the pipe B, having the flanges c d, and with the packing O and nut D, all ar- Aranged and Operating substantially as heren shown and described.
Witnesses: WALTER B. FOWLER.
