To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN H. POCOGK, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of St. Catharine's, in the county of Lincoln and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cash-Registers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cash registers consisting of mechanism for computing the cash receipts.
Reference is made to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a plan of the machine, showing three of the operating keys, two of which are broken, in order not to complex the View, all the parts being in normal ,position. Fig. 2 is a sectional end elevation of the same through the broken vertical line B, B, of Fig. 1 of the drawing, the left hand end of one of the operating keys being broken, and as vieyved from the right hand side of the machine. Fig. 3 is a sectional end elevation of the machine through the broken vertical line A, A, of Fig. l of the drawing and as viewed from the right-hand side of the machine. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of apart of the mechanism for transferring purposes, shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of a part of the mechanism for rack engagement with spur wheels shown in Fi 3 of the drawing. Fi 6 is an enlarged etail front elevation of tie numeral disk shaft. Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail end elevation of one of the numeral disks, and its shaft in section. In the drawin C is the rigid framework of the machine, D is the ri id intermediate or adding device frame, an E is the main shaft journaled in the frame C on which is fulcrumed the numeral keys F and the oscillatin frame H, the rear ends of said keys F and rame H-rest on the horizontal bar I when in normal position.
J is a shaft having a groove and journaled in the adding device frame D, on the left hand end of this shaft is secured a hand wheel K, to revolve the shaft.
M are numeral disks loosely journaled on the shaft J and revolve on said shaft in the same direction as the arrow indicates the direction of the numeral disk in Fig. 7, of the drawing, or are carried in the same direc tion by means of said hand-wheel K. Each corresponding numeral disk M is provided with a ratchet wheel N, and a spur Wheel 0, and a cam f, secured thereto.
It, is a stationary shaft in the frame D, and is provided with spur wheels S, loosely journaled on the shaft R, and mesh into the spur wheels 0 on the shaft J, to revolve the numeral disks M. Spur wheels T are secured to their respective spur wheels S, and rotate with the same and independently of the shaft R. The lower ends of the racks U are pivotally connected at 2, to the oscillating frame H, the teeth of the rack U engage with the spur wheel T, and rotates the same together with its spurwheel S, thereby revolving the numeral disks M.
V is a rock shaft, journaled in the adding device frame D and is provided with cams 3, secured to the shaft and also with a forwardly extending arm 4 secured to the ri ht hand end of the shaft V. The coupler V, is fulcrumed on the stationary shaft Y, which is secured to the frame C. Secured to the coupler W, is an arm Z, an inclined double rack 5 is pivotally connected to the rear end of the arm Z, and a rod 6 is pivotally connected to the forward end of said arm Z.
7 is a pawl pivoted at 8 to the adding device frame D. 9 is a forward pawl pivoted at 10 to the frame D. The pawls 7 and 9 are connected together by a pull spring 12. The double rack 5 has a pin 13, shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing, adapted to rotate around the retaining bracket 14 on the frame D.
The rack 5 has an angle bracket 15, on the opposite side to the pin 13, and the bracket 15 engages the arm 4 to lift and to partially rotate said arm together with its shaft V. The pawl 7 is adapted to stop against the bar 16 of the frame C, and the pawl 9 is adapted to stop against the stop pin 17 of the frame D.
18 is an arm, one end of which is pivotally connected to an upper extension of the pawl 9 at 19, and the opposite end of the arm 18 is connected to the bar 16 by means of a pull spring 20.
21 1s a roller on the underside of the arm 18 to prevent the arm 4 from rotating too far, and to return the arm 4 to normal position.
22 are the vertical stems of indicators, adapted to be raised by the rear ends of the keys F. The indicator stems 22 have stops 23 on the rear sides thereof.
24, is a shaft adapted to oscillate in the frame C, sides 25 are secured to the end arts of the shaft 24, and a horizontal rest Bar 26 is secured to the sides 25, and extends from C to C. A crank 27 is secured to the shaft 24, and a rod 28 connects the crank 27 with the pawl 7, to oscillate the shaft 24.
30 is a shaft journaled in the frame D, and has a spur wheel 3Lwhich meshes into a larger spur wheel 32, which is adapted to revolve on a stud 33 on the frame D. A ratchet wheel 34 forms a part of the spur wheel 32 and revolves with the same. A cap 35, is'journaled on the stud 33, and the previously mentioned rod 6 is pivotally connected to the cap andto the forward end of the armZat36.

45 is a shaft in the frame D provided with retainin pawls 46, to retain the ratchet wheels 47 is a shaft fulcrumed in the frame D,
and has a-hand lever 48 secured thereto.
When the upper part of the hand lever 48 is-brought forward, the lower extension of said lever 48, disengages the pawls 44, then engages and raises the forward ends of the transfer levers 42, to normal position without revolvin the ratchet wheels N, as shown in Fig. 2 o the drawing. The hand lever 48 is used only when resetting the numeral disks to zero.
The oscillating frame H is loosely journaled on the shaft E, and consists of arms H, framed by the upper cross section 50, and the lower cross sections 51 and 52. The keys F are provided with brackets 53 and 54 of varying lengths. When a key is depressed the brackets 53 leave the section 50, and the bracket 54 depresses the section 51, thereby revolving the" numeral disks M by means of the rack U, together with the spur wheels T, and O. The keys F are provided with studs 55, and when a key is depressed a stud 55 contacts with its stop 56, which is hung on the shaft Y, forcing the stop rearward till the lip 57 engages the section 52, and stops the frame H.
58 is a tension pull spring connected to stop 56 and to the key F. The lips 57 of the stops 56 vary in distance from the fulcrum shaft Y.
The operation of the machine is as follows: Upon thedepression of a key F, of any bank of keys, the brackets 53 and 54 on the key F, engages the cross sections 50 and 5] of the oscillating frame H, thereby oscillating the frame H, and lifting the rack U, until the lip 57 of the stop 56 engages the cross section 52 of the frame H, thereby arresting the progress of the rack U when the key F is at its limit. At this time the lip 60 of the coupler \V, enters the slot 61, of the key F, the indicator stems 22 are lifted by the rear end of the keys F to required height,
and the stop 23 rests on the rest bar 26. The rack U revolves the spur wheel T, together with the spur wheel S, thereby rotating the spur wheel S together with its numeral disk M, the cam P and the ratchet wheel N on the shaft J.
At every revolution of the numeral disk M, the lip 62, of the cam P, engages the point 63 of the transfer lever 42, depressing said lever, thereby dropping the pawl 44 one tooth on the ratchet wheel N, as in Fig. 2 of the drawing. When the key F has been depressed to its limit and returnin to normal position, the coupler WV, together with its arm Z, is also brought to normal position,
thereby raising the forward end of the arm Z, together with its rod 6, consequently partially revolving the cap 35, together with its dog 37 which rotates the ratchet wheel 34, together with its spur wheel 32 which rotates the spur wheel 31, together with its shaft 30, with its cam 41. The cams 41 operate alternately and in contact with the forward end of the transfer lever 42, raising the same and thereby rotating the ratchet wheel N, one tooth, and its numeral wheel one numeral, thereby effecting the transfer from one numeral disk to another numeral disk, hi 'her.
ln order to more fully apprehend the foregoing transferring mechanism, the cam P, on the units disk wheel M, engages the lever 42, and the cam 44, engages the ratchet wheel N on the next higher, or tens of units numeral disk, and repeatin for each transfer in its order following. he transfer lever 42 has a trip 64, which is adapted to engage the trip dog 65, to retain the lever 42 in normal or in operative position. The dog 65 is provided with a tension pull sprin 66, and the pawl 44 has also a tension pul aoaeaz spring 67. The shaft 47 when operated by its hand lever 48 brings the lower end part of said lever in contact with the lower fpart of the pawls 44, disengaging said pawls rom the ratchet wheels N, and continuing raises the lever 42 to normal position without revolving a ratchet wheel N or its numeral disk. The hand lever 48 is used. only for resetting the numeral disks to zero. Upon the depression of a key F, the coupler W is raised, together with the double rack 5, and its pin 13, said pin is adapted to revolve around the bracket 14. The angle bracket 15 on the rack 5, is carried upward and engages with the arm 4, which partially rot-ates the shaft V, together with its meshing cam 3, which engages the rack U to force the same into mesh with the spur wheel T. The upper end of the rack 5 being inclined, throws the pawl T rearward, consequently the crank 27 together with the rest bar 26 is thrown rearward by means of the connecting rod 28. The stop pin 23 on the stem 22 is released and allowed to pass the rest bar 26. At the said depression of a key F to its limit, the pin 13 together with the upper end of the rack 5 is forced forward by means of the pulling spring 12 which connects the pawls 7 and 9,bringing the pawl 7 into mesh with the rear teeth, and the pawl 9 into mesh with the forward teeth of the rack 5. The pawl 9 stops against the pin 17, and the pawl 7 stops agamst the bar 16, the pin 13 passes over the bracket 14 and downward on the forward side of said bracket and is forced rearward under said bracket to normal position by said spring 12. The arm 4 is raised by the bracket 15, carrying with it the arm 18, the arm 4 is immediately released upon the pin 13 passing over the bracket 14, thereby allowing the roller 21 to return the arm 4 to normal position by means of the springs 20, thereby artially revolving the meshing cam 3 and isengaging the rack U from the spur wheel T. The stop pin 23 of the stem 22 rests on the bar 26, and can not be released until a key F is depressed.
In Fig. 7 of the drawing is shown a pawl (38, pivoted to a numeral disk M and adapted to engage the groove 69 in the shaft J, said shaft being revolved by the hand wheel K carries the numeral disks in line. This feature is not claimed.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a cash register, a main stationary frame, a main shaft journaled therein, keys fulcrumed on the shaft, an oscillating frame on said main shaft, an adding device frame,
a shaft journaled therein, numeral disks on the shaft, a coupler shaft in the main stationary frame, key operated stops hung on the coupler shaft adapted to engage the 0scillatin frame at a predetermined position upon t 1e depression of a key to its limit, thereby preventing the momentum of the numeral wheels.
2. In a cash register, a stationary frame, a main shaft, in the frame, an oscillating frame on the said shaft, a single rack pivotally connected thereto, a stationary coupler shaft in the frame, a coupler on said shaft, an arm on the coupler, an adding device frame, a shaft journaled in the adding device frame, cams secured on said shaft, an arm extending from said shaft, an incline double rack pivotally connected to the coupler arm, adapted to partially revolve the cam shaft by raising its arm, thereby bringing the single rack to operative position.
3. A stationary frame, a coupler journaled therein, an arm extending from the coupler, an adding device frame, a transfer shaft ji'uu'nalcd therein, transfer cams secured on said shaft, a stud on the adding device frame, a cap on the stud, means connecting the arm and the cap to partially revolve the shaft, by the raising of the coupler.
4. An adding device frame, a shaft journaled therein, a hand lever on the shaft, a. numeral disk shaft, numeral disks thereon, a transfer lever fulcrumed in the frame, a pawl on the transfer lever adapted to be disengaged from action with a numeral disk by means of said hand lever, when the numeral disks are reset to zero, the hand lever also setting the transfer lever to normal position.
5. A main frame, a main shaft journaled in said frame, a coupler shaft stationed in said frame, a coupler fulcrumed on said coupler shaft, a double rack pivoted to said coupler, an adding device frame in said main frame, a cam shaft journaled in said adding device frame and means to oscillate said cam shaft.
6. A main frame, a coupler journaled in said frame, an adding device frame, a transfer shaft journaled therein, adding wheels on the shaft, transfer cams on said shaft, a stud on the adding device frame, a cap on the stud, and means connecting the coupler and cap to the transfer shaft to partially rotate the said shaft.
